My Take on a Consistent MLB DFS Process – Looking at Pitchers
I always start an MLB slate by looking at pitching, not only do you get a grasp on who the pitchers are that you want to target, but gives you a holistic look at the slate as well. Breaking down pitching also gives you an idea of what offenses are in good spots against bad/vulnerable pitchers. I start my research by going straight to the MLB Carnage Report this is where we can analyze all the pitchers on the slate in a compact, yet detailed manner. Below are the three pitchers that jumped out to me at first glance, good or bad.
- Justin Verlander
- Jameson Taillon
- Shohei Ohtani

Pittsburgh Pirates @ Washington Nationals (-135)
Pitchers:
Pirates – Mitch Keller
Nationals – Paolo Espino
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 9. Once again I just don’t see a reason to attack this game. We saw the “bad” pitchers dominate the “bad” offenses on Tuesday night. Keller has always flashed talent and that explains why he was such a highly rated prospect but I just don’t think we need to go there.
PIT 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Bryan Reynolds, Oneil Cruz
GPP Note: Team ISO of .210 over the last week.
WAS 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Josh Bell, Juan Soto
GPP Note: Team ISO of .152 over the last week.
Milwaukee Brewers @ Tampa Bay Rays (-130)
Pitchers:
Brewers – Eric Lauer
Rays – Jalen Beeks/Bullpen
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 7.5. I honestly have no idea how to attack this game. I absolutely hate bullpen games because they allow managers to mix and match so much that it’s really tough to gauge for stacking purposes. The Rays bats have flashed some power against LHPs recently but overall, they are still pretty weak. I think Lauer makes some sense for GPP purposes but he’s probably still priced a little too high.
MIL 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Andrew McCutchen
GPP Note: Team ISO of .204 over the last week.
TB 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Isaac Paredes
GPP Note: Team ISO of .185 over the last week.
Atlanta Braves (-140) @ Philadelphia Phillies
Pitchers:
Braves – Kyle Wright
Phillies – Ranger Suarez
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 8.5. I have been pretty big on Suarez throughout the season but I might have to hop off and be all about the ATL power bats against him. Wright has definite upside but the Philly lineup is still pretty dangerous, even without Bryce Harper being in the middle.
ATL 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Travis d’Arnaud, Dansby Swanson
GPP Note: Team ISO of .173 over the last week.
PHI 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Kyle Schwarber
GPP Note: Team ISO of .109 over the last week.

Miami Marlins @ St Louis Cardinals (EVEN)
Pitchers:
Marlins – Sandy Alcantara
Cardinals – Andre Pallante
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 7.5. I was shocked to see an EVEN line with Alcantara on the mound for MIA. Pallante isn’t exactly a stud on the mound so Vegas really thinks that this MIA offense is struggling right now. I don’t want to attack Alcantara but I don’t mind a mini-stack of the Cardinals.
MIA 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Miguel Rojas, Jon Berti
GPP Note: Team ISO of .169 over the last week.
STL 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Nolan Arenado, Paul Goldschmidt
GPP Note: Team ISO of .219 over the last week.
San Diego Padres (-140) @ Arizona D’Backs
Pitchers:
Padres – Mike Clevinger
D’Backs – Madison Bumgarner
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 8.5. With SD waking up a bit Tuesday night, I think we can go to them against Mad Bum. I’m not a huge fan of Clevinger but he gets such a plus match-up. I may stick to mini-stacks in this game unless something pops up in my in-depth research for the game.
SD 5-star plays: Luke Voit
4-star plays: Jurickson Profar
GPP Note: Team ISO of .109 over the last week.
ARI 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: David Peralta, Ketel Marte
GPP Note: Team ISO of .126 over the last week.
Chicago White Sox @ Los Angeles Angels (-150)
Pitchers:
White Sox – Michael Kopech
Angels – Shohei Ohtani
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 7.5. We saw the White Sox bats wake up later in last night’s game but I don’t think that carries over against Ohtani. The LAA bats were swinging the power stick but very little aside from that last night. I wouldn’t be shocked by a 4-2 game tonight with maybe a Trout HR involved in that scoring.
CWS 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Gavin Sheets, Jose Abreu
GPP Note: Team ISO of .083 over the last week.
LAA 5-star plays: Mike Trout
4-star plays: Jared Walsh
GPP Note: Team ISO of .173 over the last week.
Houston Astros (-125) @ New York Mets
Pitchers:
Astros – Justin Verlander
Mets – Taijuan Walker
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 7.5. The Astros got to Carrasco last night and I really think they continue in this game. Walker has stepped up lately as his stuff has picked up and he’s been far sharper overall. The Astros’ bats have just been rolling over the last week or two and Yordan is just racking up numbers. I don’t see the Mets hitters doing a ton of damage to Verlander but I wouldn’t be shocked if they get to him for 3 runs.
HOU 5-star plays: Yordan Alvarez
4-star plays: Alex Bregman, Jose Altuve
GPP Note: Team ISO of .236 over the last week.
NYM 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Francisco Lindor
GPP Note: Team ISO of .163 over the last week.

Boston Red Sox @ Toronto Blue Jays (-145)
Pitchers:
Red Sox – Nick Pivetta
Blue Jays – Alek Manoah
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 8.5. Much like yesterday with Wacha, I hate the match-up for Pivetta tonight. The Blue Jays offer so much RH power that it makes it really hard for him. He has allowed plenty of HRs to this lineup in previous match-ups. Manoah needs to be treated like an ace at this point as he’s capable of shutting down every team he faces. I don’t think we need to fully stack BOS but I wouldn’t mind a mini-stack here and there.
BOS 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Alex Verdugo, Rafael Devers
GPP Note: Team ISO of .163 over the last week.
TOR 5-star plays: George Springer, Bo Bichette
4-star plays: Vlad Guerrero, Cavan Biggio
GPP Note: Team ISO of .222 over the last week.
Cincinnati Reds @ Chicago Cubs (-130)
Pitchers:
Reds – Hunter Greene
Cubs – Justin Steele
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 7.5. Seeing a total at just 7.5 makes me think that we get a very strong pitching environment at Wrigley, which really makes me happy. I wasn’t going to be interested in the offenses so I really wanted to make sure the wind wasn’t blowing straight out so I could use the SPs. Greene has a massive fastball and a ton of upside he’s going to be my preferred for GPP purposes while Steele seems like the safer option of the two.
CIN 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Nick Senzel, Brandon Drury
GPP Note: Team ISO of .152 over the last week.
CHC 5-star plays: Willson Contreras
4-star plays: Ian Happ
GPP Note: Team ISO of .148 over the last week.
Minnesota Twins @ Cleveland Guardians (-115)
Pitchers:
Twins – Dylan Bundy
Guardians – Cal Quantrill
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 8.5. I spent yesterday going over how the HR ball has disappeared in CLE this season with our VIP chat. The biggest drop has been CLE hitters, having cut in more than half at this point. I think the Twins can get to Quantrill as they appear to be getting healthy, from a main lineup standpoint. Bundy is extremely hit or miss at this point but I actually like his chances more than Quantrill.
MIN 5-star plays: Carlos Correa
4-star plays: Alex Kirilloff, Luis Arraez
GPP Note: Team ISO of .197 over the last week.
CLE 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Jose Ramirez, Franmil Reyes
GPP Note: Team ISO of .134 over the last week.
Los Angeles Dodgers (-185) @ Colorado Rockies
Pitchers:
Dodgers – Julio Urias
Rockies – German Marquez
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 11.5. Ok, ok, ok…Will the real LAD team please stand up? I thought we might get an explosion last night and then they just stopped producing. Arguably a top 3 offense in baseball, I don’t think they go the entire series without exploding at all so that means we should see runs today, right? I am hoping that Jake Lamb is in the LAD lineup after being called up as he has hit Marquez extremely well.
LAD 5-star plays: Trea Turner
4-star plays: Justin Turner, Freddie Freeman
GPP Note: Team ISO of .172 over the last week.
COL 5-star plays: CJ Cron
4-star plays: Kris Bryant
GPP Note: Team ISO of .143 over the last week.

Oakland A’s @ New York Yankees (-275)
Pitchers:
A’s – Cole Irvin
Yankees – Jameson Taillon
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 8.5. Since I started this article, the Yankees have moved closer to -300 in this game and it’s hard to argue against that movement. Taillon lines up in an excellent spot and should be one of the most popular SPs today. Irvin allows plenty of contact and that is not a good thing against the power of the Yankees lineup. I wouldn’t be shocked to see a NYY bat with a double-dong performance.
OAK 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Seth Brown
GPP Note: Team ISO of .092 over the last week.
NYY 5-star plays: Aaron Judge
4-star plays: Giancarlo Stanton, Josh Donaldson
GPP Note: Team ISO of .192 over the last week.
Baltimore Orioles @ Seattle Mariners (-135)
Pitchers:
Orioles – Austin Voth
Mariners – Chris Flexen
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 8. We saw both of these offenses struggle to do anything last night and while the SPs are weaker in this one but I still question the offenses a bit right now. I think I will go back to both offenses but I don’t have the same desires that I had last night in getting bats against Ray. I used a decent amount of Ray but he’s one of those guys that either absolutely dominates or walks 4 and gives up a couple of HRs.
BAL 5-star plays: Austin Hays
4-star plays: Cedric Mullins
GPP Note: Team ISO of .224 over the last week.
SEA 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Jesse Winker, Julio Rodriguez
GPP Note: Team ISO of .188 over the last week.
Detroit Tigers @ San Francisco Giants (-210)
Pitchers:
Tigers – Ronny Garcia
Giants – Alex Wood
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 8. Wood follows up Rodon and I generally don’t like that as a baseball strategist. Having a “weaker” LHP follow a strong LHP in the rotation just seems like you are getting the opposition ready. With that said, we are talking about the Tigers and their lineup that is half filled with guys hitting under .220 at this point, with half of those guys hitting under .200. I think mini-stacks of SF make a ton of sense for GPP purposes.
DET 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Miguel Cabrera, Javy Baez
GPP Note: Team ISO of .159 over the last week.
SF 5-star plays: Joc Pederson
4-star plays: Brandon Belt, Mike Yasztremski
GPP Note: Team ISO of .211 over the last week.
Texas Rangers (-120) @ Kansas City Royals
Pitchers:
Rangers – Dane Dunning
Royals – Zack Greinke
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 9. Texas really hooked me up last night and I will be back on them in my top 5 or 6 today. Calhoun has absolutely dominated Greinke in his career and the rest of Texas’ lineup has some solid BvP. Dunning has a big arm but he hits a wall and allows runs so a KC mini-stack is interesting given the upside of guys like Merrifield, Benintendi, and Witt Jr.
TEX 5-star plays: Kole Calhoun
4-star plays: Corey Seager, Adolis Garcia
GPP Note: Team ISO of .176 over the last week.
KC 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Bobby Witt, Whit Merrifield
GPP Note: Team ISO of .184 over the last week.
Stacks of the Day: Main Slate
- Toronto Blue Jays
- Los Angeles Dodgers
- Atlanta Braves
MLB Dinger of the Day – Bo Bichette, Toronto (back to the well)
