My Take on a Consistent MLB DFS Process – Looking at Pitchers

I always start an MLB slate by looking at pitching, not only do you get a grasp on who the pitchers are that you want to target, but gives you a holistic look at the slate as well. Breaking down pitching also gives you an idea of what offenses are in good spots against bad/vulnerable pitchers. I start my research by going straight to the  MLB Carnage Report this is where we can analyze all the pitchers on the slate in a compact, yet detailed manner. Below are the three pitchers that jumped out to me at first glance, good or bad.

  • Lance Lynn
  • Framber Valdez
  • Kyle Gibson

We have a BRAND NEW update to our MLB Domination Station lineup optimizer with advanced user-controlled scoring systems inside.  You control how the lineups are built from three main uses of our projections: Points-based, DFSA Grades, or the unique blend of Hybrid Scoring!  The Domination Station will help you create 150 of the highest projected lineups in a matter of minutes. With features that allow you to Like 😀 Love 😍 or Dislike 😡 a player, you can create a fully unique pool of players to generate your lineups from every day. Combine the power of the Domination Station with our VIP Only Articles and the MLB Research Station to really take your game to the next level.

St Louis Cardinals (-177) @ Pittsburgh Pirates

Pitchers:

Cardinals – Adam Wainwright

Pirates – Steven Brault

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 8.5. I know I generally want Wainwright when he’s at home but I can make an exception for when he’s on the road against the weaker offenses in baseball. Brault can do just enough to frustrate us but I do like the Cardinals bats right now, especially the top of the order. Goldschmidt and Edman are two of the hotter bats going right now and they make an excellent mini-stack in our builds.

STL 5-star plays: Paul Goldschmidt

4-star plays: Dylan Carlson, Tommy Edman

GPP Note: Team ISO of .176 against LHPs this season.

PIT 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Colin Moran, Yoshi Tsutsugo

GPP Note: Team ISO of .128 against RHPs this season.

Boston Red Sox (-153) @ Cleveland Indians

Pitchers:

Red Sox – Nathan Eovaldi

Indians – Cal Quantrill

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 9. When will the Red Sox actually get consistent on offense? They should have smashed Logan Allen yesterday but he looked like Cy Young on the mound. I want to believe Boston will wake up but I also have to realize that they are struggling and Quantrill has been really solid for much of the season. Eovaldi is a solid SP but I wonder about his true upside. He does a great job of limiting HRs so that’s always going to be a plus.

BOS 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Alex Verdugo, Kyle Schwarber

GPP Note: Team ISO of .152 against RHPs this season.

CLE 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Jose Ramirez, Wilson Ramos

GPP Note: Team ISO of .171 against RHPs this season.

Tampa Bay Rays (-190) @ Baltimore Orioles

Pitchers:

Rays – Michael Wacha

Orioles – John Means

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 9.5. This is really tough because I obviously think pretty highly of Means but I can also see plenty of offense happening in this match-up. Wacha can struggle and RHBs can give him some fits. I am really torn as I sit here typing this because TB is capable of doing so much but I hate picking on Means while the Orioles are struggling but I can’t trust Wacha in any way.

TB 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Randy Arozarena, Manuel Margot

GPP Note: Team ISO of .160 against LHPs this season.

BAL 5-star plays: Cedric Mullins

4-star plays: Ryan Mountcastle, Austin Hays

GPP Note: Team ISO of .159 against RHPs this season.

Cincinnati Reds (-111) @ Miami Marlins

Pitchers:

Reds – Vladimir Gutierrez

Marlins – Sandy Alcantara

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 8. We should see a decently thrown game by both SPs with Gutierrez in a very plus spot. The ballpark is going to help both of these SPs but Alcantara has the far tougher match-up. With that said, he’s also the better pitcher of the two so there is some upside with him. I do believe we can stack the Reds but I might lean more towards mini-stack combinations over full-stacks on both sites.

CIN 5-star plays: Tyler Naquin

4-star plays: Joey Votto, Mike Moustakas

GPP Note: Team ISO of .191 against RHPs this season.

MIA 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Jesus Sanchez

GPP Note: Team ISO of .139 against RHPs this season.

New York Yankees (-115) @ Oakland Athletics

Pitchers:

Yankees – Nestor Cortes

Athletics – Frankie Montas

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 8.5. I don’t think the offenses are in a great spot in this game but a pitcher like Montas is prone to blow-ups and this Yankees offense can certainly provide the spark to ignite that explosion. Day games in Oakland are far better for hitters than the night games are so we definitely could see more action. Marte is always in my player pool and Olson has 17 HRs against LHPs this season so he always has GPP winning upside.

NYY 5-star plays: Rougned Odor

4-star plays: Giancarlo Stanton, Aaron Judge

GPP Note: Team ISO of .162 against RHPs this season.

OAK 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Matt Olson, Starling Marte

GPP Note: Team ISO of .166 against LHPs this season.

Kansas City Royals @ Seattle Mariners (-153)

Pitchers:

Royals – Daniel Lynch

Mariners – Tyler Anderson

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 8.5. Last night’s game might still be going on! I am kidding, I think, as the game went extras and we saw KC turn to today’s originally projected starter, Hernandez, after Bubic. I am not enamored with either SP so the offenses stand out a bit but not in a full-stack kind of way. We can focus pretty narrowly in this match-up and use one-offs and mini-stacks and feel pretty solid about our builds around Perez or France.

KC 5-star plays: Salvador Perez

4-star plays: Whit Merrifield

GPP Note: Team ISO of .154 against LHPs this season.

SEA 5-star plays: Ty France

4-star plays: Mitch Haniger

GPP Note: Team ISO of .160 against LHPs this season.

Washington Nationals @ New York Mets (-213)

Pitchers:

Nationals – Sean Nolin

Mets – Marcus Stroman

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 8.5. Stroman feels like a very interesting GPP option as long as he treats Soto like he’s the only one that can do damage. The Mets get a decent match-up but their offense hasn’t really shown up in a while. Alonso will always make my one-off pool thanks to his power. Nimmo is a guy that can hit LHPs and he’s had success against Nolin, in a very small sample. Just a game for one-offs in my builds at this point in the morning.

WSH 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Juan Soto

GPP Note: Team ISO of .151 against RHPs this season.

NYM 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Pete Alonso, Brandon Nimmo

GPP Note: Team ISO of .135 against LHPs this season.

Houston Astros (-240) @ Texas Rangers

Pitchers:

Astros – Framber Valdez

Rangers – Kolby Allard

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 9. Valdez always finds himself near the top for me and I am wondering if I am just biased at this point. He gets a very strong match-up so I want to believe he’s capable of a 7 inning, 9 K type performance. The Astros recently got Bregman back and I think they start to heat up sooner than later. I probably think higher of HOU than most sites do at this point but I just can’t quit jamming them into my builds.

HOU 5-star plays: Yuli Gurriel

4-star plays: Alex Bregman, Jose Altuve

GPP Note: Team ISO of .165 against LHPs this season.

TEX 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Andy Ibanez, Nick Solak

GPP Note: Team ISO of .133 against LHPs this season.

Chicago Cubs @ Chicago White Sox (-290)

Pitchers:

Cubs – Alec Mills

White Sox – Lance Lynn

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 8.5. Lynn should be one of the chalkiest pitchers overall today, even after the Cubs smacked around Dallas Keuchel. I can see a lot of people chasing the CWS offense from last night’s explosion but I might pump the brakes somewhat. Mills is capable of keeping an offense off-balance just enough to make a stack not worth it. I won’t be fading the White Sox altogether as they offer some excellent upside but I won’t go overboard.

CHC 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Ian Happ, Rafael Ortega

GPP Note: Team ISO of .161 against RHPs this season.

CWS 5-star plays: Yoan Moncada

4-star plays: Jose Abreu, Luis Robert

GPP Note: Team ISO of .162 against RHPs this season.

Arizona Diamondbacks @ Philadelphia Phillies (-213)

Pitchers:

D’Backs – Humberto Mejia

Phillies – Kyle Gibson

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 9. Gibson gets a dream match-up but we had that yesterday with Nola and he wasn’t as sharp as we would have expected. Gibson hasn’t been great since his strong first half with Texas but I just can’t ignore this spot. Philly is in play as they are in the middle of a race and need their offense to wake up. Harper is going to be one of my top one-off bats on this slate as he is primed for a huge final month+ of the season.

ARI 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Ketel Marte, Josh Rojas

GPP Note: Team ISO of .138 against RHPs this season.

PHI 5-star plays: Bryce Harper

4-star plays: Odubel Herrera

GPP Note: Team ISO of .162 against RHPs this season.

San Francisco Giants @ Atlanta Braves (EVEN)

Pitchers:

Giants – Logan Webb

Braves – Huascar Ynoa

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 8.5. Ynoa has some huge upside in his arm but I do have some worries in this match-up. Actually, I have one worry, his HRs are allowed against the team-leading baseball in HRs this season. With that said, I don’t think I want to stack SF but I do want to go HR hunting with them. Webb has been really solid for SF this season as well but he also faces a very powerful offense. This game is really tough to take a stand on because I can see a number of outcomes, despite a lower total for a game in Atlanta at this time of year.

SF 5-star plays: Kris Bryant

4-star plays: Mike Yastrzemski

GPP Note: Team ISO of .199 against RHPs this season.

ATL 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Joc Pederson, Jorge Soler

GPP Note: Team ISO of .189 against RHPs this season.

Milwaukee Brewers (-145) @ Minnesota Twins

Pitchers:

Brewers – Adrian Houser

Twins – Charlie Barnes

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 10. The Twins shut down the Brewers last night but I just don’t think that happens again in this one. I am not saying that the Brewers are going to explode but we see a higher total for today than we had last night. Houser is a decent option but the Twins have still flashed power without Cruz and now they have Buxton back. I do think either side could score 7+ runs in this game and I wouldn’t be surprised.

MIL 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Luis Urias, Avisail Garcia

GPP Note: Team ISO of .166 against LHPs this season.

MIN 5-star plays: Josh Donaldson

4-star plays: Byron Buxton, Luis Arraez

GPP Note: Team ISO of .189 against RHPs this season.

Colorado Rockies @ Los Angeles Dodgers (-255)

Pitchers:

Rockies – Jon Gray

Dodgers – David Price

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 9. The Rockies bats did enough last night to pick up the W but it’s really tough to see that happening two nights in a row, against the Dodgers. Price is in a plus spot but he’s not overly reliable and he lacks the K upside we had gotten used to seeing out of him. The Dodgers have some really impressive BvP against Jon Gray so I do think we need to get us some Dodgers stacks. I had them stacked last night on DK and I was shocked at how low-owned they were against Freeland.

COL 5-star plays: CJ Cron

4-star plays: Charlie Blackmon

GPP Note: Team ISO of .178 against LHPs this season.

LAD 5-star plays: Cody Bellinger, Justin Turner

4-star plays: Corey Seager, Chris Taylor

GPP Note: Team ISO of .180 against RHPs this season.

San Diego Padres (-121) @ Los Angeles Angels

Pitchers:

Padres – Ryan Weathers

Angels – Jose Suarez

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 10. This is another one of those games that should be easy to figure out but I am stumped as to what to do. Weathers hasn’t looked good recently but the Angels lineup isn’t exactly a world-beater at the moment. The Padres bats aren’t as dangerous against LHPs but they get such an intriguing match-up that I think we need to stack them up and concentrate on the guys that have had success against LHPs, only.

SD 5-star plays: Tommy Pham

4-star plays: Manny Machado, Fernando Tatis Jr

GPP Note: Team ISO of .147 against LHPs this season.

LAA 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Shohei Ohtani

GPP Note: Team ISO of .177 against LHPs this season.

Toronto Blue Jays (-195) @ Detroit Tigers

Pitchers:

Blue Jays – Alek Manoah

Tigers – Jose Urena

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 9.5. I will be going right back to the Blue Jays after they let me down for what feels like the 88th straight day. They have to wake up at some point and I am going to continue to ride them out while others jump off. Urena can be hit around, especially by LHBs, but the issue is that TOR doesn’t have many of them. Manoah has impressive upside and while the Tigers can be annoying, they aren’t a team that should scare us.

TOR 5-star plays: Corey Dickerson

4-star plays: Marcus Semien, Vlad Guerrero Jr

GPP Note: Team ISO of .194 against RHPs this season.

DET 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Miguel Cabrera

GPP Note: Team ISO of .158 against RHPs this season.
