My Take on a Consistent MLB DFS Process – Looking at Pitchers
I always start an MLB slate by looking at pitching, not only do you get a grasp on who the pitchers are that you want to target, but gives you a holistic look at the slate as well. Breaking down pitching also gives you an idea of what offenses are in good spots against bad/vulnerable pitchers. I start my research by going straight to the MLB Carnage Report this is where we can analyze all the pitchers on the slate in a compact, yet detailed manner. Below are the three pitchers that jumped out to me at first glance, good or bad.
- Edward Cabrera
- Shohei Ohtani
- Zach Plesac

Arizona Diamondbacks @ Pittsburgh Pirates

D’Backs – Tyler Gilbert
Pirates – Mitch Keller
Rundown:
Waiting on the Vegas information.
ARI 5-star plays: Ketel Marte

GPP Note: Team ISO of .135 against RHPs this season.
PIT 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Bryan Reynolds
GPP Note: Team ISO of .122 against LHPs this season.
Texas Rangers @ Cleveland Indians (-160)
Pitchers:
Rangers – Jake Latz
Indians – Zach Plesac
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 9. Latz is a 25-year-old LHP who would be making his MLB debut. I haven’t had a chance to dig in yet but I do know that I will be on the Indians yet again, vs another LHP. They let me down on Tuesday night but we have to have a short-term memory. Plesac is an interesting SP option for our GPP builds.
TEX 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Adolis Garcia
GPP Note: Team ISO of .152 against RHPs this season.
CLE 5-star plays: Jose Ramirez

Cincinnati Reds @ Milwaukee Brewers (-177)
Pitchers:
Reds – Luis Castillo
Brewers – Brandon Woodruff
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 7.5. Another great SP match-up in this series but I would say this one has a bit more volatility to it than Tuesday’s. Castillo can be spectacular or he could give up 3 HRs in 4 innings to this Brewers squad. Woodruff doesn’t have the same K upside that Burnes had but I think he’s better at limiting damage right now. I don’t want to stack the Reds but I will have a Brewers stack just in case Castillo blows up.
CIN 5-star plays: Tyler Naquin
4-star plays: Joey Votto
GPP Note: Team ISO of .193 against RHPs this season.
MIL 5-star plays: Kolten Wong
4-star plays: Avisail Garcia

Watching the weather is half the battle when it comes to MLB DFS. The DFS Army Weather Station has you covered, from games that have delay and postponement potential to games that could have significant winds that will play a role in selecting a team to stack or a pitcher to use.

Kansas City Royals @ Houston Astros (-240)
Pitchers:
Royals – Mike Minor
Astros – Lance McCullers Jr
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 9. Are the Astros going to wake up, ever? I like this spot for them as they have a handful of guys who have had success against Minor. I don’t like the Royals as much as I have the last couple of days so McCullers should make my list of playable SPs on the site. Yordan should go overlooked in an LvL match-up and that intrigues me.
KC 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Salvador Perez, Andrew Benintendi
GPP Note: Team ISO of .141 against RHPs this season.
HOU 5-star plays: Yordan Alvarez
4-star plays: Yuli Gurriel, Jose Altuve
GPP Note: Team ISO of .163 against LHPs this season.
Washington Nationals @ Miami Marlins (-111)
Pitchers:
Nationals – Josiah Gray
Marlins – Edward Cabrera
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 8. As a true baseball fan, I am really excited to see these two SPs face off. They are a couple of the best SP prospects in baseball and they should be allowed to cut their teeth at the MLB level as the season closes out. Cabrera is really interesting for me as he has some impressive K ability. Gray gets a K boost after watching how Fedde handled the Marlins on Tuesday night.
WSH 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Juan Soto
GPP Note: Team ISO of .151 against RHPs this season.
MIA 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Jazz Chisholm Jr
GPP Note: Team ISO of .140 against RHPs this season.

Chicago White Sox @ Toronto Blue Jays (-121)
Pitchers:
White Sox – Lucas Gioltio
Blue Jays – Robbie Ray
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 8.5. This is a spot where I think the Blue Jays wake up a little bit. I realize Giolito is considered an ace-like SP but he tries to pitch up in the zone and against a power ladened lineup like Toronto, which can lead to a lot of mistakes. Of course, that means the Blue Jays could struggle with pop-ups and Ks as well so there is some volatility. I like Ray, especially if Tim Anderson continues to be out but the White Sox do have some power that he needs to avoid.
CWS 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Jose Abreu, Andrew Vaughn
GPP Note: Team ISO of .174 against LHPs this season.
TOR 5-star plays: Vlad Guerrero Jr, Corey Dickerson
4-star plays: Marcus Semien, Bo Bichette
GPP Note: Team ISO of .197 against RHPs this season.
Tampa Bay Rays @ Philadelphia Phillies
Pitchers:
Rays – Undecided
Phillies – Zack Wheeler
Rundown:
Waiting on the Vegas information.
TB 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Austin Meadows, Brandon Lowe
GPP Note: Team ISO of .195 against RHPs this season.
PHI 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Odubel Herrera, Bryce Harper
GPP Note: Team ISO of .162 against RHPs this season.
San Francisco Giants @ New York Mets (-111)
Pitchers:
Giants – Johnny Cueto
Mets – Taijuan Walker
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 8.5. We should see another decently thrown game by two SPs that are capable of doing enough. I think Walker is the better SP but he faces the more difficult offense. As we saw on Tuesday, SF can bombard you with HRs as they lead MLB in that category. I don’t think I want to fully stack either side but mini-stacks are definitely in play.
SF 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: LaMonte Wade Jr, Brandon Belt
GPP Note: Team ISO of .198 against RHPs this season.
NYM 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Kevin Pillar, Brandon Nimmo
GPP Note: Team ISO of .148 against RHPs this season.

Minnesota Twins @ Boston Red Sox (-172)
Pitchers:
Twins – Bailey Ober
Red Sox – Nick Pivetta
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 10.5. We saw this game explode for runs on Tuesday and while that probably means people chase the runs, I can’t argue with looking at the Red Sox again. The lineup is a very dangerous one and I think that heating up could be a huge thing for them over the next week to 10 days as they need to get themselves back in the race.
MIN 5-star plays: Jorge Polanco
4-star plays: Josh Donaldson
GPP Note: Team ISO of .187 against RHPs this season.
BOS 5-star plays: Alex Verdugo
4-star plays: Xander Bogaerts, Kyle Schwarber
GPP Note: Team ISO of .190 against RHPs this season.
Colorado Rockies (-145) @ Chicago Cubs – Game 1
Pitchers:
Rockies – German Marquez
Cubs – Justin Steele
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 7. Remember that this game will be a 7-inning contest. I will be going back to a pitcher in Wrigley tonight. This time it’s going to be Marquez as I just don’t think the Cubs are good enough, despite winning on a walk-off last night after being dominated by Senzatela, of all people. Steele could be decent but he has allowed 3 HRs in his 2 starts. I do like the Rockies against LHPs so it’s not a super easy spot for him.
COL 5-star plays: CJ Cron
4-star plays: Charlie Blackmon, Garrett Hampson
GPP Note: Team ISO of .177 against LHPs this season.
CHC 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: David Bote, Rafael Ortega
GPP Note: Team ISO of .162 against RHPs this season.
Colorado Rockies @ Chicago Cubs – Game 2
Pitchers:
Rockies – Austin Gomber
Cubs – Zach Davies
Rundown:
Waiting on the Vegas information. Remember that this game will be a 7-inning contest.
COL 5-star plays: Trevor Story
4-star plays: Charlie Blackmon, Sam Hilliard
GPP Note: Team ISO of .155 against RHPs this season.
CHC 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: David Bote, Patrick Wisdom
GPP Note: Team ISO of .172 against LHPs this season.
Los Angeles Dodgers (-135) @ San Diego Padres
Pitchers:
Dodgers – Walker Buehler
Padres – Blake Snell
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 8. I really look forward to this match-up as we could definitely see a 2-1 type ball game if Snell has his head on straight. The tough thing is to go all-in on both SPs because the offenses they are facing are definitely dangerous. There is some BvP to look at but ultimately, it’s mainly the pitching that I am all about.
LAD 5-star plays: Chris Taylor
4-star plays: Trea Turner, Justin Turner
GPP Note: Team ISO of .181 against LHPs this season.
SD 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Trent Grisham, Fernando Tatis Jr
GPP Note: Team ISO of .170 against RHPs this season.
Detroit Tigers @ St Louis Cardinals (-145)
Pitchers:
Tigers – Tarik Skubal
Cardinals – Jon Lester
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 9. We know that Lester isn’t going to have some elite game so that kind of removes him from consideration and we know that Miggy has destroyed him in their careers. Skubal has great upside in his arm thanks to his K ability but he gets a tougher match-up as the Cardinals can hit LHPs really well, especially with Carlson back from the IL.
DET 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Miguel Cabrera, Robbie Grossman
GPP Note: Team ISO of .157 against LHPs this season.
STL 5-star plays: Paul Goldschmidt
4-star plays: Tommy Edman, Paul DeJong
GPP Note: Team ISO of .174 against LHPs this season.
Stacks of the Day: Main Slate
- Boston Red Sox
- Toronto Blue Jays
- Cleveland Indians
MLB Dinger of the Day – Franmil Reyes, Cleveland
