My Take on a Consistent MLB DFS Process – Looking at Pitchers
I always start an MLB slate by looking at pitching, not only do you get a grasp on who the pitchers are that you want to target, but gives you a holistic look at the slate as well. Breaking down pitching also gives you an idea of what offenses are in good spots against bad/vulnerable pitchers. I start my research by going straight to the MLB Carnage Report this is where we can analyze all the pitchers on the slate in a compact, yet detailed manner. Below are the three pitchers that jumped out to me at first glance, good or bad.
- Jameson Taillon
- Zack Wheeler
- Madison Bumgarner

Miami Marlins @ Cincinnati Reds
Pitchers:
Marlins – Zach Thompson
Reds – Luis Castillo
Rundown:
Waiting on the Vegas information. I haven’t seen the updated Vegas information yet this morning but I like where Castillo sits in this spot. The Marlins aren’t a dangerous squad and he flashes excellent upside even though he’s extremely frustrating to roster. The Reds let a bunch of people down the last couple of days so while they have a very dangerous offense, especially at home, Thompson could be an interesting GPP play on DK as your SP2.
MIA 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Jazz Chisholm
GPP Note: Team ISO of .143 against RHPs this season.
CIN 5-star plays: Joey Votto
4-star plays: Jonathan India, Nick Castellanos
GPP Note: Team ISO of .189 against RHPs this season.
New York Mets @ Los Angeles Dodgers
Pitchers:
Mets – Taijuan Walker
Dodgers – Walker Buehler
Rundown:
Waiting on the Vegas information. The Dodgers haven’t announced who they will run out there but Buehler would be the logical option as he would be going on normal rest. He has been so steady all season long and the Mets are struggling mightily at the plate. The Dodgers lineup is just so dangerous that I am not sure that I can be on Taijuan Walker despite his strong season so far. He did hold this Dodgers lineup to a solo HR in his last start.
NYM 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Michael Conforto
GPP Note: Team ISO of .149 against RHPs this season.
LAD 5-star plays: Corey Seager
4-star plays: Cody Bellinger, Max Muncy
GPP Note: Team ISO of .182 against RHPs this season.
Watching the weather is half the battle when it comes to MLB DFS. The DFS Army Weather Station has you covered, from games that have delay and postponement potential to games that could have significant winds that will play a role in selecting a team to stack or a pitcher to use.

Houston Astros (-190) @ Kansas City Royals
Pitchers:
Astros – Luis Garcia
Royals – Mike Minor
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 9. I always end up drawn to Luis Garcia as he has allowed 2 earned or less in 6 of his last 9 starts. Minor has allowed 2 HRs in each of his last 3 starts so we know he isn’t exactly sharp right now. The Astros offense has let some people down recently as they have one of the worst records since the All-Star break. I think it’s about time that Jose Altuve heats up for the Astros.
HOU 5-star plays: Yordan Alvarez, Jose Altuve
4-star plays: Yuli Gurriel, Aledmys Diaz
GPP Note: Team ISO of .158 against LHPs this season.
KC 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Salvador Perez, Whit Merrifield
GPP Note: Team ISO of .140 against RHPs this season.

Baltimore Orioles @ Tampa Bay Rays (-380)
Pitchers:
Orioles – Jorge Lopez
Rays – Shane McClanahan
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 9. The Orioles have lost something like 44 straight games (I believe it’s 13) and now the Rays are MASSIVE favorites despite only running out McClanahan. He has made 2 starts against BAL this season (both somewhat recent) and is averaging 25 DK ppg in those starts. I always stack against Lopez and I always point out how I expect him to be blown up. He has allowed 7 runs in 10.2 innings against TB this season.
BAL 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Trey Mancini, Cedric Mullins
GPP Note: Team ISO of .155 against RHPs this season.
TB 5-star plays: Brandon Lowe
4-star plays: Kevin Kiermaier, Randy Arozarena
GPP Note: Team ISO of .196 against RHPs this season.

Oakland Athletics @ Chicago White Sox (-135)
Pitchers:
Athletics – Cole Irvin
White Sox – Dylan Cease
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 9. The A’s messed with me yesterday as Irvin appeared to be the starter for much of the day but they went with Blackburn and now Irvin will start today. I like the White Sox bats against LHPs so it’s going to be an extremely tough spot for him. Cease has impressive K upside but he could also give up an HR or two against this OAK squad. The upside is certainly there for him in this spot.
OAK 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Starling Marte, Jed Lowrie
GPP Note: Team ISO of .174 against RHPs this season.
CWS 5-star plays: Jose Abreu, Luis Robert
4-star plays: Tim Anderson, Eloy Jimenez
GPP Note: Team ISO of .178 against LHPs this season.
Minnesota Twins @ New York Yankees (-260)
Pitchers:
Twins – John Gant
Yankees – Jameson Taillon
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 10.5. Taillon struggled a bit in his last start but that was against the White Sox and the Twins just aren’t in the same discussion as the White Sox right now. He’s been at his best when pitching at home and he should be very popular on DK thanks to a messed-up price (in my opinion). Gant has been decent with the Twins but he’s getting the call after having a massive walk issue with the Cardinals. If he walks that many Yankees (who are always uber patient), we could see some big innings with the long ball.
MIN 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Max Kepler, Jorge Polanco
GPP Note: Team ISO of .188 against RHPs this season.
NYY 5-star plays: Giancarlo Stanton, Anthony Rizzo
4-star plays: DJ LeMahieu, Aaron Judge
GPP Note: Team ISO of .156 against RHPs this season.
Los Angeles Angels (EVEN) @ Detroit Tigers
Pitchers:
Angels – Jose Quintana
Tigers – Matt Manning
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 9. Today is the day that Miggy gets to 500 and I am so confident in, that he is my Dinger of the Day (sorry to spoil it). Neither SP is an option for me while neither offense really excites me from a full-stack standpoint. Ohtani just threw a gem yesterday so it’ll be interesting to see if he’s leading off the morning after. If he is out of the lineup, the Angels lineup becomes extremely weak.
LAA 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Jared Walsh, Shohei Ohtani
GPP Note: Team ISO of .162 against RHPs this season.
DET 5-star plays: Miguel Cabrera
4-star plays: Robbie Grossman
GPP Note: Team ISO of .160 against LHPs this season.
Milwaukee Brewers (-210) @ St Louis Cardinals
Pitchers:
Brewers – Brandon Woodruff
Cardinals – Jon Lester
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 8. I am a little shocked to see an 8 total with Lester taking the mound. He allows so much contact at this point that only bad things can happen against this Milwaukee squad. Woodruff is so strong and steady but he falls behind a few of the other SPs for me today. He struck out 10 in 7.2 innings in his only start against STL this season. I do think the Brewers are a solid GPP stack and on a shorter main slate, they are going to end up in my top 3.
MIL 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Lorenzo Cain, Luis Urias
GPP Note: Team ISO of .166 against LHPs this season.
STL 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Tyler O’Neill
GPP Note: Team ISO of .150 against RHPs this season.
Seattle Mariners (-153) @ Texas Rangers
Pitchers:
Mariners – Chris Flexen
Rangers – Spencer Howard
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 8.5. Flexen should be on our radar because of how bad this Texas team is right now. He has allowed 3 runs or less in 9 of his last 10 starts. He has made 3 starts and thrown 19.1 innings against Texas this season and has allowed just 5 runs in those starts. It sounds like Howard will only go 3-4 innings every time he takes the mound for the Rangers so he’s just not an option for me but the Mariners’ offense could be against a weaker Texas bullpen.
SEA 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Kyle Seager, Mitch Haniger
GPP Note: Team ISO of .157 against RHPs this season.
TEX 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Nathaniel Lowe, Adolis Garcia
GPP Note: Team ISO of .152 against RHPs this season.
Philadelphia Phillies (-203) @ Arizona Diamondbacks
Pitchers:
Phillies – Zack Wheeler
D’Backs – Madison Bumgarner
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 8.5. I love this SP match-up as we know how elite that Zack Wheeler has been but we also know that Bumgarner has allowed 2 earned or less in 6 straight starts. The Phillies offense hasn’t been getting it done and they are definitely weaker without Hoskins in the middle against LHPs. As much as I love the SP match-up, I do think we can use a one-off or two from this game.
PHI 5-star plays: JT Realmuto
4-star plays: Bryce Harper
GPP Note: Team ISO of .171 against LHPs this season.
ARI 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Ketel Marte, Christian Walker
GPP Note: Team ISO of .136 against RHPs this season.
Stacks of the Day: Main Slate
- Los Angeles Dodgers
- New York Yankees
- Milwaukee Brewers
MLB Dinger of the Day – Miguel Cabrera, Detroit
