My Take on a Consistent MLB DFS Process – Looking at Pitchers
I always start an MLB slate by looking at pitching, not only do you get a grasp on who the pitchers are that you want to target, but gives you a holistic look at the slate as well. Breaking down pitching also gives you an idea of what offenses are in good spots against bad/vulnerable pitchers. I start my research by going straight to the MLB Carnage Report this is where we can analyze all the pitchers on the slate in a compact, yet detailed manner. Below are the three pitchers that jumped out to me at first glance, good or bad.

Chicago Cubs @ Cincinnati Reds (-216)
Pitchers:
Cubs – Justin Steele
Reds – Wade Miley
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 9. The Cubs may never win another game and I wish I was kidding when saying that. The lineup they are running out on a daily basis has to be the worst in baseball. They are striking out plenty but the issue here is that Miley isn’t a strikeout guy and power happens in this ballpark. On the other side, I much prefer CIN bats against RHPs but I think they should do some damage against Steele and the bullpen of the Cubs.

New York Mets @ San Francisco Giants (-177)

Mets – Rich Hill
Giants – Kevin Gausman
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 8. The Giants bats have some pretty strong BvP against Hill in their careers. Gausman has been spectacular this season and something that people might not realize is that the Mets are still playing in New York at 9:24 PM CST when I am writing this. They have to travel across the country overnight.

Atlanta Braves (-145) @ Miami Marlins

Braves – Touki Toussaint
Marlins – Braxton Garrett
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 8.5. As you can see below, I am all about the Braves with how they are swinging the bats. Garrett isn’t somebody that should scare you off of an offense swinging the power bats. Toussaint is a guy that I fall in love with based on his arm talent. He flashes so much upside and then he finds a way to hit a wall. I will be all over him yet again in this one.
ATL 5-star plays: Dansby Swanson, Ozzie Albies, Austin Riley
4-star plays: Jorge Soler, Freddie Freeman, Adam Duvall

Houston Astros (-157) @ Kansas City Royals

Astros – Jake Odorizzi
Royals – Carlos Hernandez
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 10. Hernandez has been somewhat impressive but this is a pretty tough match-up. I know the Astros just crapped the bed against a struggling Detmers but I can definitely see them showing up. Odorizzi is extremely hit or miss and the Royals have some pretty decent BvP against him from his time with the Twins.
HOU 5-star plays: Yordan Alvarez
4-star plays: Michael Brantley

KC 5-star plays: Whit Merrifield

Pittsburgh Pirates @ Los Angeles Dodgers (-380)

Pirates – Steven Brault
Dodgers – Undecided
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 9. Looks like the Dodgers will be going with an opener and a long-man scenario in the Monday night game. Now, remember that just like the Mets, the Dodgers are still playing at 9:40 PM CST and have to travel across the country. With that said, they shouldn’t be too worried about the Pirates. A few of the Dodgers bats have strong numbers against Brault.

Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 9.5. Quantrill has allowed just 5 earned runs over his last 6 starts. Seeing the Twins favored and a total near 10 makes me question a few things. My first look screams use the pitchers in this game, especially Quantrill with how he’s been throwing it. I think you can use one-offs or mini-stacks from this game in your GPP builds.
CLE 5-star plays: Jose Ramirez
4-star plays: Amed Rosario

Baltimore Orioles @ Tampa Bay Rays (-260)

Orioles – Matt Harvey
Rays – Collin McHugh/Josh Fleming
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 9. Harvey has been throwing the ball well in the second half but let’s be honest, he’s not going to keep it up. The Rays have the power bats to put up some big numbers against him. Looks like the Rays will go with an opener before Fleming. It makes a lot of sense with how strong the top of the Orioles lineup has been against LHPs this season.

Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 12. Tatis makes his triumphant return and HR’s twice on Sunday, just in time to head to Coors to swing away. The total is massive and the offenses both look like they are in great spots as the Rockies are at their best against LHPs. San Diego has hit Senzatela extremely well so we should see some fireworks here.

Oakland Athletics (EVEN) @ Chicago White Sox

White Sox – Dallas Keuchel
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 9. This could be a slugfest as the White Sox have been hitting some HRs but their pitching hasn’t been able to get guys out. Montas is capable of being blown up any time he takes the mound. Keuchel doesn’t scare anybody at this point so the A’s should make a ton of contact. There are a number of A’s bats with solid history against Keuchel. I want to bet the over 9 at this point but might wait until it moves to 9.5 to get a better price!
OAK 5-star plays: Starling Marte
4-star plays: Matt Chapman, Yan Gomes

Los Angeles Angels @ New York Yankees (-245)

Angels – Jose Suarez
Yankees – Gerrit Cole
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 8.5. Cole is making his return from the COVID-IL so I am not sure what he is going to be like. We have seen some guys struggle in their first game back after testing positive. He gets a plus match-up as the Angels lineup is rather weak and contains some Ks to be had. The Yankees have the power to make this a very long game for Suarez, they just don’t have guys who are scorching hot at the moment.
