My Take on a Consistent MLB DFS Process – Looking at Pitchers
I always start an MLB slate by looking at pitching, not only do you get a grasp on who the pitchers are that you want to target, but gives you a holistic look at the slate as well. Breaking down pitching also gives you an idea of what offenses are in good spots against bad/vulnerable pitchers. I start my research by going straight to the MLB Carnage Report this is where we can analyze all the pitchers on the slate in a compact, yet detailed manner. Below are the three pitchers that jumped out to me at first glance, good or bad.
- Tanner Houck
- Sean Manaea
- Charlie Morton

Tampa Bay Rays (-140) @ Cleveland Indians
Pitchers:
Rays – Josh Fleming
Indians – Cal Quantrill
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 9. This game just doesn’t seem to interest me a whole lot from a first look. Arozarena is rolling right now so he should be somebody we look to use a bunch and the Rays have guys that can double-dong at any point in Meadows and Lowe. The Indians haven’t been swinging it overly well of late.
TB 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Randy Arozarena, Brandon Lowe
GPP Note: Team ISO of .175 against RHPs this season.
CLE 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Amed Rosario, Franmil Reyes
GPP Note: Team ISO of .160 against LHPs this season.
San Diego Padres @ Miami Marlins
Pitchers:
Padres – Blake Snell
Marlins – Undecided
Rundown:
Waiting on the Marlins SP choice.
SD 5-star plays: Fernando Tatis Jr
4-star plays: Tommy Pham, Manny Machado
GPP Note: Team ISO of .219 over the last 7 days.
MIA 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Miguel Rojas, Starling Marte
GPP Note: Team ISO of .143 against LHPs this season.
Texas Rangers @ Detroit Tigers (-125)
Pitchers:
Rangers – Mike Foltynewicz
Tigers – Tyler Alexander
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 9.5. The Tigers are playing pretty good baseball right now so they are favored despite Texas putting the better SP on the mound in this game. Baddoo is rolling at the top of the order and he should be pretty affordable yet. Realize that Gallo could get scratched at any moment due to being on the trade wire.
TEX 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Joey Gallo
GPP Note: Team ISO of .140 against LHPs this season.
DET 5-star plays: Akil Baddoo
4-star plays: Jonathan Schoop
GPP Note: Team ISO of .151 against RHPs this season.
Watching the weather is half the battle when it comes to MLB DFS. The DFS Army Weather Station has you covered, from games that have delay and postponement potential to games that could have significant winds that will play a role in selecting a team to stack or a pitcher to use.

New York Yankees @ Boston Red Sox (-121)
Pitchers:
Yankees – Jordan Montgomery
Red Sox – Tanner Houck
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 10. I am a fan of Houck’s future and the Yankees lineup is a little watered down right now so he is somebody that intrigues me for GPP purposes. He’s certainly far from safe as the Yankees still offer plenty of power. Gleyber has started out the 2nd half on a power binge and as an owner of him in a Dynasty league, I am all for it.
NYY 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Gleyber Torres, Greg Allen
GPP Note: Team ISO of .158 against RHPs this season.
BOS 5-star plays: Xander Bogaerts
4-star plays: Christian Vazquez, Hunter Renfroe
GPP Note: Team ISO of .181 against LHPs this season.
Chicago Cubs @ St Louis Cardinals (-121)
Pitchers:
Cubs – Adbert Alzolay
Cardinals -Kwang-Hyun Kim
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 8.5. We know that the Cubs can struggle quite a bit at times and Kim could benefit from some quick innings and an uptick in K numbers. We also know that the Cubs do have a ton of power in the lineup so there is some GPP winning upside. The Cardinals are in the same boat as the Cubs of late as they’ve hit a rough stretch but they do have some guys swinging it decently since the All-Star break.
CHC 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Javy Baez, Kris Bryant
GPP Note: Team ISO of .165 against LHPs this season.
STL 5-star plays: Paul Goldschmidt
4-star plays: Harrison Bader, Tyler O’Neill
GPP Note: Team ISO of .147 against RHPs this season.
San Francisco Giants @ Los Angeles Dodgers (-172)
Pitchers:
Giants – Anthony DeSclafani
Dodgers – Walker Buehler
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 7.5. DeSclafani has been absolutely dominant on the road this season but he has been absolutely destroyed by the Dodgers. He has given up 15 runs in 12.1 innings against them (5 HRs). Buehler has given up just 2 earned runs in 19.2 innings against the Giants.
SF 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Mike Yastrzemski
GPP Note: Team ISO of .194 against RHPs this season.
LAD 5-star plays: Will Smith
4-star plays: Max Muncy, Mookie Betts
GPP Note: Team ISO of .178 against RHPs this season.

Los Angeles Angels @ Minnesota Twins (-140)
Pitchers:
Angels – Andrew Heaney
Twins – Kenta Maeda
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 9.5. Maeda has looked solid in his last 3 starts after looking totally lost to begin the season. I think he’s a sneaky option despite the higher LAA team total. Heaney has K upside but he seems to get roughed up in a bad inning. The Twins offer a TON of power against LHPs in their lineup. We could see 5+ HRs in this game tonight.
LAA 5-star plays: Shohei Ohtani
4-star plays: David Fletcher, Taylor Ward
GPP Note: Team ISO of .176 against RHPs this season.
MIN 5-star plays: Nelson Cruz, Mitch Garver
4-star plays: Josh Donaldson
GPP Note: Team ISO of .190 against LHPs this season.

Oakland Athletics (-140) @ Seattle Mariners
Pitchers:
Athletics – Sean Manaea
Mariners – Chris Flexen
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 7.5. Flexen ended up not pitching in Coors and now he gets a much better spot at home. The A’s have a lineup that can explode but a 7.5 total means that we should see some strong pitching here. I think I want to get some mini-stacks in this game because I could see a few guys being the ones to dent the scoreboard, even in a 4-3 game. Manaea is always on my list as he has the stuff to be dominant at times.
OAK 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Matt Olson, Matt Chapman
GPP Note: Team ISO of .174 against RHPs this season.
SEA 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Mitch Haniger, Ty France
GPP Note: Team ISO of .173 against LHPs this season.
Atlanta Braves (-135) @ Philadelphia Phillies
Pitchers:
Braves – Charlie Morton
Phillies – Matt Moore
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 8.5. Morton has been at his best on the road this season so he’s in a plus spot but we do know that PHI can explode at any point. Moore has allowed 6 runs on 12 hits in just 7 innings against ATL this season. Going back to Morton, he has allowed 10 runs but just 4 were earned in 11.2 innings against PHI this season.
ATL 5-star plays: Austin Riley
4-star plays: Freddie Freeman, Ozzie Albies
GPP Note: Team ISO of .193 against LHPs this season.
PHI 5-star plays: Bryce Harper
4-star plays: JT Realmuto
GPP Note: Team ISO of .159 against RHPs this season.
Stacks of the Day: Main Slate
- Boston Red Sox
- Tampa Bay Rays
- Minnesota Twins
MLB Dinger of the Day – Bryce Harper, Philadelphia
