Happy MLB Season and welcome to another year of the DFS Army MLB Full Count! You have to start your research somewhere, and oftentimes going game by game and breaking down every matchup and its key players is the first step in our process. My name is Eric, @Razzle11Grinds on Twitter, make sure to give me a follow as I’ll occasionally make updates to the advice in the article out on Twitter as well as inside our coaching forums. With that said, let’s get it started!
My Take on a Consistent MLB DFS Process – Looking at Pitchers
I always start an MLB slate by looking at pitching, not only do you get a grasp on who the pitchers are that you want to target, but gives you a holistic look at the slate as well. Breaking down pitching also gives you an idea of what offenses are in good spots against bad/vulnerable pitchers. I start my research by going straight to the MLB Carnage Report this is where we can analyze all the pitchers on the slate in a compact, yet detailed manner. Below are the three pitchers that jumped out to me at first glance, good or bad.
- Kyle Gibson
- Taijuan Walker
- Gerrit Cole – Is this grip thing a real issue for him? Will his Ks bounce back?

New York Mets (-145) @ Baltimore Orioles
Pitchers:
Mets – Taijuan Walker
Orioles – Matt Harvey
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 9. The Orioles got to Peterson and the Mets bullpen Tuesday night but this is a much tougher spot for them. Walker has been really strong overall and I think he does enough to contain the Orioles. Harvey hasn’t been very good so this is a chance for the Mets to wake up a bit.
NYM 5-star plays: Pete Alonso
4-star plays: Francisco Lindor, Dominic Smith
GPP Note: Team ISO of .130 against RHPs this season.
BAL 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Cedric Mullins
GPP Note: Team ISO of .151 against RHPs this season.
Chicago Cubs @ San Diego Padres (-195)
Pitchers:
Cubs – Jake Arrieta
Padres – Yu Darvish
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of just 8. Darvish gets to take on his former team. There are plenty of Ks for him to pick up but there is also some dangerous power to deal with. Arrieta is in a very tough spot against this SD squad so if I had to throw out a guess right now, I would assume SD finds themselves in my top 6 for stacks.
CHC 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Joc Pederson, Anthony Rizzo
GPP Note: Team ISO of .164 against RHPs this season.
SD 5-star plays: Wil Myers
4-star plays: Fernando Tatis Jr., Tommy Pham
GPP Note: Team ISO of .146 against RHPs this season.
New York Yankees (-172) @ Minnesota Twins
Pitchers:
Yankees – Gerrit Cole
Twins – Randy Dobnak
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 8. Really interested to see how Cole bounces back after a rougher performance and a terrible interview where he was asked about substances. Dobnak is not a very strong SP at this point but the Yankees bats aren’t scorching right now either. I would rather use their bats than Dobnak but I may just skip this game a bit, aside from a GPP share or two of Cole.
NYY 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Aaron Judge, Gleyber Torres
GPP Note: Team ISO of .137 against RHPs this season.
MIN 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: NONE
GPP Note: Team ISO of .178 against RHPs this season.
Watching the weather is half the battle when it comes to MLB DFS. The DFS Army Weather Station has you covered, from games that have delay and postponement potential to games that could have significant winds that will play a role in selecting a team to stack or a pitcher to use.

Arizona Diamondbacks @ Oakland Athletics
Pitchers:
Arizona – Matt Peacock
Athletics – Sean Manaea
Rundown:
Waiting on the Vegas information.
ARI 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Eduardo Escobar, Ketal Marte
GPP Note: Team ISO of .201 against LHPs this season.
OAK 5-star plays: Matt Olson
4-star plays: Mark Canha, Tony Kemp
GPP Note: Team ISO of .171 against RHPs this season.
Houston Astros @ Boston Red Sox (-135)
Pitchers:
Astros – Jake Odorizzi
Red Sox – Nathan Eovaldi
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 9.5. I expect this game to be the popular spot for game stacks and just full stacks from one side or the other. Both SPs are capable of getting lit up, especially Odorizzi right now. Boston probably ends up at the top of my list as far as stacks go on the day.
HOU 5-star plays: Jose Altuve
4-star plays: Carlos Correa, Alex Bregman
GPP Note: Team ISO of .156 against RHPs this season.
BOS 5-star plays: Xander Bogaerts
4-star plays: Rafael Devers, JD Martinez
GPP Note: Team ISO of .190 against RHPs this season.

Toronto Blue Jays @ Chicago White Sox (-140)
Pitchers:
Blue Jays – Alek Manoah
White Sox – Lance Lynn
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 8. My initial thought was that I would be stacking TOR for GPP purposes. Lynn has traditionally been a reverse splits guy and the Blue Jays hit RHPs better than LHPs overall. Manoah threw a gem in his debut and then struggled his last time out. I don’t think he’s going to throw a gem but he has the stuff to surprise.
TOR 5-star plays: Marcus Semien
4-star plays: Vlad Guerrero Jr, Bo Bichette
GPP Note: Team ISO of .186 against RHPs this season.
CWS 5-star plays: Tim Anderson
4-star plays: Yoan Moncada
GPP Note: Team ISO of .141 against RHPs this season.
Milwaukee Brewers (-115) @ Cincinnati Reds
Pitchers:
Brewers – Brett Anderson
Reds – Vladimir Gutierrez
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 9.5. We should see a lot of stacks from this game, despite a team like MIL being involved. Should be some great hitting weather with some SPs that allow plenty of contact. The Reds let us down a bit on Tuesday night so that makes me want to double-down and go overweight on them tonight.
MIL 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Christian Yelich, Omar Narvaez
GPP Note: Team ISO of .155 against RHPs this season.
CIN 5-star plays: Nick Castellanos
4-star plays: Eugenio Suarez, Jesse Winker
GPP Note: Team ISO of .162 against LHPs this season.
Los Angeles Dodgers (-160) @ Pittsburgh Pirates
Pitchers:
Dodgers – Tony Gonsolin
Pirates – Tyler Anderson
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 9. Gonsolin will be making his season debut but we need to learn more about the plan for him. I assume he’s going to be limited a bit. Anderson started the season out picking up Ks and looking decent but this is a very tough spot for him. I am surprised the total is sitting at 9, in this park.
LAD 5-star plays: Justin Turner
4-star plays: Mookie Betts, Max Muncy
GPP Note: Team ISO of .162 against LHPs this season.
PIT 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Ke’Bryan Hayes
GPP Note: Team ISO of .118 against RHPs this season.
Atlanta Braves @ Philadelphia Phillies (-121)
Pitchers:
Braves – Tucker Davidson
Phillies – Zach Eflin
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 9. I have been impressed with Davidson but this might not be a great spot for him. Eflin has stepped up a bit but he draws a very tough match-up. Swanson has absolutely owned him so far in their match-ups. We should be targeting this game for bats at first look.
ATL 5-star plays: Dansby Swanson
4-star plays: Ronald Acuna Jr.
GPP Note: Team ISO of .193 against RHPs this season.
PHI 5-star plays: Andrew McCutchen
4-star plays: Rhys Hoskins
GPP Note: Team ISO of .161 against LHPs this season.
San Francisco Giants @ Texas Rangers (-111)
Pitchers:
Giants – Sam Long
Rangers – Kyle Gibson
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 8.5. Gibson has been really strong for Texas and while it’s a tough match-up, I like his ability to get outs. Long gets a plus match-up just because the Rangers aren’t very good, at all. Long is expected to be the long man for the Giants. Crawford had a huge game last night and has really bounced back this season.
SF 5-star plays: Brandon Crawford
4-star plays: Buster Posey
GPP Note: Team ISO of .187 against RHPs this season.
TEX 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Adolis Garcia, Charlie Culberson
GPP Note: Team ISO of .142 against LHPs this season.

Cleveland Indians @ St Louis Cardinals (-121)
Pitchers:
Indians – JC Mejia
Cardinals – Adam Wainwright
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 8. Wainwright at home is somebody I am always interested in. The Indians are a team that he should have pretty solid success against. Cleveland’s bats woke up a little bit yesterday but that shouldn’t be the case here. The Cardinals’ bats have a shot to wake up against Mejia.
CLE 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Eddie Rosario, Jose Ramirez
GPP Note: Team ISO of .167 against RHPs this season.
STL 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Dylan Carlson, Nolan Arenado
GPP Note: Team ISO of .153 against RHPs this season.
Seattle Mariners @ Detroit Tigers (-121)
Pitchers:
Mariners – Chris Flexen
Tigers – Casey Mize
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 8.5. Mize is in a great spot to continue his strong run. He has allowed 3 earned or less in 8 of his last 10 starts. Flexen has been really hit or miss so far this season. He’s thrown some really strong starts and then he’s allowed 5+ runs in starts. He gets a plus match-up, aside from a couple of hot Detroit bats.
SEA 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Kyle Seager
GPP Note: Team ISO of .158 against RHPs this season.
DET 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Jonathan Schoop, Erik Haase
GPP Note: Team ISO of .152 against RHPs this season.
Washington Nationals @ Tampa Bay Rays (-145)
Pitchers:
Nationals – Patrick Corbin
Rays – Shane McClanahan
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 8. TB just faced an LHP yesterday so I think that helps them here against Corbin. McClanahan has impressive arm talent which brings a strong K ceiling into play. He’s not extremely polished just yet but there’s some upside there. He has allowed 2 earned or less in 4 of his 7 starts.
WSH 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Trea Turner, Ryan Zimmerman
GPP Note: Team ISO of .142 against LHPs this season.
TB 5-star plays: Austin Meadows
4-star plays: Mike Zunino, Manuel Margot
GPP Note: Team ISO of .151 against LHPs this season.
Colorado Rockies @ Miami Marlins
Pitchers:
Rockies – Austin Gomber
Marlins – Undecided
Rundown:
Waiting on the Vegas information.
COL 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Charlie Blackmon, Raimel Tapia
GPP Note: Team ISO of .140 against RHPs this season.
MIA 5-star plays: Jesus Aguilar
4-star plays: Starling Marte
GPP Note: Team ISO of .151 against LHPs this season.
Kansas City Royals @ Los Angeles Angels (-125)
Pitchers:
Royals – Brad Keller
Angels – Griffin Canning
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 9. I really love the spot for the KC bats as Canning has had a ton of problems this year and they do damage to RHPs. Keller is an arm that has frustrated me this season as he’s shown some strong stuff but then he’s also just been absolutely lit up. Upton and Ohtani create a really tough 1-2 in the LAA lineup right now.
KC 5-star plays: Andrew Benintendi
4-star plays: Carlos Santana, Salvador Perez
GPP Note: Team ISO of .151 against RHPs this season.
LAA 5-star plays: Shohei Ohtani
4-star plays: Justin Upton, Jared Walsh
GPP Note: Team ISO of .171 against RHPs this season.
Stacks of the Day: Main Slate
- Boston Red Sox
- Houston Astros
- Kansas City Royals
MLB Dinger of the Day – Nick Castellanos, Cincinnati Reds
