Happy MLB Season and welcome to another year of the DFS Army MLB Full Count! You have to start your research somewhere, and oftentimes going game by game and breaking down every matchup and its key players is the first step in our process. My name is Eric, @Razzle11Grinds on Twitter, make sure to give me a follow as I’ll occasionally make updates to the advice in the article out on Twitter as well as inside our coaching forums. With that said, let’s get it started!
My Take on a Consistent MLB DFS Process – Looking at Pitchers
I always start an MLB slate by looking at pitching, not only do you get a grasp on who the pitchers are that you want to target, but gives you a holistic look at the slate as well. Breaking down pitching also gives you an idea of what offenses are in good spots against bad/vulnerable pitchers. I start my research by going straight to the MLB Carnage Report this is where we can analyze all the pitchers on the slate in a compact, yet detailed manner. Below are the three pitchers that jumped out to me at first glance, good or bad.
- Tyler Glasnow
- Pablo Lopez
- Chris Bassitt

New York Mets (-121) @ Baltimore Orioles
Pitchers:
Mets – David Peterson
Orioles – Bruce Zimmermann
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 9.5. We get a couple of LHPs that can give up some runs. The issue here is that both of these offenses aren’t exactly juggernauts. The total in this game makes me want to consider stacking both sides but I might lean more towards 3 man stacks with each side.
NYM 5-star plays: Pete Alonso
4-star plays: Francisco Lindor, Jonathan Villar
GPP Note: Team ISO of .144 against LHPs this season.
BAL 5-star plays: Trey Mancini
4-star plays: Ryan Mountcastle, Cedric Mullins
GPP Note: Team ISO of .179 against LHPs this season.
Chicago Cubs @ San Diego Padres (-160)
Pitchers:
Cubs – Zach Davies
Padres – Dinelson Lamet
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of just 7.5. Lamet has advanced to 72 pitches during his most recent start, which happens to have come against this Chicago Cubs squad. San Diego is keeping him pretty tight in terms of pitch count increases and I wouldn’t be shocked if he maxes out around 80 pitches. He has the impressive ability so he’s worth some GPP consideration. Davies was a Padre last season and threw really well in San Diego.
CHC 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Joc Pederson, Kris Bryant
GPP Note: Team ISO of .164 against RHPs this season.
SD 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Fernando Tatis Jr., Eric Hosmer
GPP Note: Team ISO of .146 against RHPs this season.
New York Yankees @ Minnesota Twins (EVEN)
Pitchers:
Yankees – Jordan Montgomery
Twins – Michael Pineda
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 8.5. Pineda gets to take on his former team while they are struggling at the plate. Montgomery gets to take on a Twins lineup that has hit LHPs really well but is struggling and dealing with injuries. I will always have the Twins stacked against an LHP but I won’t go overweight on them at this point.
NYY 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Miguel Andujar, Gleyber Torres
GPP Note: Team ISO of .137 against RHPs this season.
MIN 5-star plays: Nelson Cruz
4-star plays: Miguel Sano, Kyle Garlick
GPP Note: Team ISO of .196 against LHPs this season.

Arizona Diamondbacks @ Oakland Athletics (-210)
Pitchers:
Arizona – Jon Duplantier
Athletics – Chris Bassitt
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 8.5. Duplantier has really struggled at the MLB level and now gets an extremely dangerous OAK squad. I wish Laureano was healthy and that Chapman would figure things out but it’s going to be hard to ignore the Canha-Olson combination. Bassitt is a strong SP with solid K upside and he’s been averaging nearly 21 DK ppg at home this season.
ARI 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: David Peralta, Ketal Marte
GPP Note: Team ISO of .136 against RHPs this season.
OAK 5-star plays: Matt Olson
4-star plays: Mark Canha, Tony Kemp
GPP Note: Team ISO of .171 against RHPs this season.
Houston Astros (-121) @ Boston Red Sox
Pitchers:
Astros – Framber Valdez
Red Sox – Martin Perez
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 9.5. These two SPs just faced the other squad last week. Valdez put up an impressive stat line in a win against a tough Red Sox lineup. Perez silenced a tough HOU squad, in Houston. With the total being at 9.5, I have to side with the bats right now but Valdez is always on my radar and would get a big boost if JD Martinez is out yet.
HOU 5-star plays: Jose Altuve
4-star plays: Yuli Gurriel, Martin Maldonado
GPP Note: Team ISO of .165 against LHPs this season.
BOS 5-star plays: Xander Bogaerts
4-star plays: Hunter Renfroe, Christian Arroyo
GPP Note: Team ISO of .160 against LHPs this season.

Toronto Blue Jays @ Chicago White Sox (-140)
Pitchers:
Blue Jays – Robbie Ray
White Sox – Carlos Rodon
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 8.5. We get a battle of two strong LHPs who also have some control issues. This game could see 18+ Ks from the SPs but it also could see 8+ BBs. The White Sox are among the MLB elite when it comes to facing LHPs while the Blue Jays have some solid bats against LHPs but they are better against RHPs overall.
TOR 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Randal Grichuk, Teoscar Hernandez
GPP Note: Team ISO of .169 against LHPs this season.
CWS 5-star plays: Tim Anderson
4-star plays: Nick Madrigal, Andrew Vaughn
GPP Note: Team ISO of .194 against LHPs this season.
Milwaukee Brewers @ Cincinnati Reds (-125)
Pitchers:
Brewers – Adrian Houser
Reds – Sonny Gray
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 8.5. The Reds have a ton of power when they are at home, against an RHP. I am really curious to see how they perform against Houser. Gray is a strong arm and the Brewers can struggle at times but this ballpark is built for offense. I can see this game being popular for mini-stacks.
MIL 5-star plays: Willy Adames
4-star plays: Christian Yelich, Omar Narvaez
GPP Note: Team ISO of .155 against RHPs this season.
CIN 5-star plays: Jesse Winker
4-star plays: Eugenio Suarez, Nick Castellanos
GPP Note: Team ISO of .185 against RHPs this season.
Los Angeles Dodgers (-195) @ Pittsburgh Pirates
Pitchers:
Dodgers – Walker Buehler
Pirates – JT Brubaker
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 7.5. Buehler draws a solid match-up while Brubaker may be sneaky in a low-totaled game. The Dodgers always have upside but they aren’t very consistent right now. I expect that to change once they get fully healthy. Hayes has returned from the IL and picked up where he left off. He’s the only Pirate bat that I am considering at this point.
LAD 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Mookie Betts, Cody Bellinger
GPP Note: Team ISO of .168 against RHPs this season.
PIT 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Ke’Bryan Hayes
GPP Note: Team ISO of .118 against RHPs this season.
Atlanta Braves @ Philadelphia Phillies (-153)
Pitchers:
Braves – Drew Smyly
Phillies – Aaron Nola
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 8.5. Nola has allowed 7 runs in 10.2 innings against ATL this season but he gets them at home where he is FAR stronger. Smyly is a guy that can surprise but I think PHI is a tough match-up for him as the LHBs like Harper and Herrera can hit him while McCutchen and Hoskins line up in a plus spot.
ATL 5-star plays: Ronald Acuna Jr.
4-star plays: Freddie Freeman
GPP Note: Team ISO of .193 against RHPs this season.
PHI 5-star plays: Andrew McCutchen
4-star plays: Rhys Hoskins, JT Realmuto
GPP Note: Team ISO of .161 against LHPs this season.
San Francisco Giants (-135) @ Texas Rangers
Pitchers:
Giants – Alex Wood
Rangers – Jordan Lyles
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 8.5. Wood has been strong for SF and now takes on a pretty weak TEX squad. If they have the roof closed, he becomes a strong GPP option. Lyles is a decent actual pitcher but he’s not somebody we need to consider on a 15 game slate. SF’s offense has been really impressive this season, even with all the random injuries they have dealt with.
SF 5-star plays: Brandon Crawford
4-star plays: Buster Posey
GPP Note: Team ISO of .187 against RHPs this season.
TEX 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Khris Davis, Charlie Culberson
GPP Note: Team ISO of .142 against LHPs this season.

Cleveland Indians (-160) @ St Louis Cardinals
Pitchers:
Indians – Shane Bieber
Cardinals – Carlos Martinez
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 7.5. Bieber is a top-tier SP but he seems to have some issues at times this season. He isn’t as a lights-out, dominant, as he was last season. He’s still in a great spot but this STL squad seems like one that could surprise him a bit. His road K numbers have been absolutely ridiculous so I could see him striking out 10-12 but also allowing 3 runs. Martinez is a guy that I just don’t think has “it” at this point. He gets a decent match-up but it’s not one that makes him viable in my opinion.
CLE 5-star plays: Harold Ramirez
4-star plays: Eddie Rosario, Jose Ramirez
GPP Note: Team ISO of .167 against RHPs this season.
STL 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Dylan Carlson
GPP Note: Team ISO of .153 against RHPs this season.
Seattle Mariners @ Detroit Tigers (-111)
Pitchers:
Mariners – Marco Gonzales
Tigers – Matthew Boyd
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 8. An interesting match-up between two very solid LHPs. I could see using both SPs but I also could see going with a mini-stack from each squad. Schoop and Haase are tearing the cover off of the ball right now but the Tigers have been atrocious against LHPs this season.
SEA 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Kyle Seager, Tom Murphy
GPP Note: Team ISO of .164 against LHPs this season.
DET 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Jonathan Schoop, Erik Haase
GPP Note: Team ISO of .109 against LHPs this season.
Washington Nationals @ Tampa Bay Rays (-195)
Pitchers:
Nationals – Jon Lester
Rays – Tyler Glasnow
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 7.5. Glasnow is always in play for me. He’s actually extremely tough on LHBs but can give up some power to RHBs. Lester can surprise some and he gets a plus K match-up, despite not offering a ton of K upside for himself. Meadows had been one of the hottest hitters in baseball and he’s had success against Lester.
WSH 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Trea Turner, Juan Soto
GPP Note: Team ISO of .136 against RHPs this season.
TB 5-star plays: Austin Meadows
4-star plays: Mike Zunino, Manuel Margot
GPP Note: Team ISO of .151 against LHPs this season.
Colorado Rockies @ Miami Marlins (-160)
Pitchers:
Rockies – Antonio Senzatela
Marlins – Pablo Lopez
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 7.5. Lopez is going to end up one of my favorite SPs on the entire slate. He’s been absolutely dominant at home this season and he takes on a team that struggles mightily on the road. On the other side, I just don’t see myself targeting Marlins bats or Senzatela.
COL 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Charlie Blackmon, Matt Adams
GPP Note: Team ISO of .140 against RHPs this season.
MIA 5-star plays: Starling Marte
4-star plays: Jesus Aguilar
GPP Note: Team ISO of .132 against RHPs this season.
Kansas City Royals @ Los Angeles Angels (-135)
Pitchers:
Royals – Kris Bubic
Angels – Andrew Heaney
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 9. Kowar made his debut on Monday night for KC and lasted just 0.2 innings so the Royals bullpen is going to need Bubic to throw a gem here. Both of these LHPs offer us upside while their match-ups aren’t too difficult overall. The Angels seem to be stronger overall against LHPs while the Royals have a couple guys that could give Heaney troubles.
KC 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Carlos Santana, Salvador Perez
GPP Note: Team ISO of .139 against LHPs this season.
LAA 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Justin Upton
GPP Note: Team ISO of .165 against LHPs this season.
Stacks of the Day: Main Slate
- Oakland Athletics
- Chicago White Sox
- Tampa Bay Rays
MLB Dinger of the Day – Matt Olson, Oakland A’s
