Happy MLB Season and welcome to another year of the DFS Army MLB Full Count! You have to start your research somewhere, and oftentimes going game by game and breaking down every matchup and its key players is the first step in our process. My name is Eric, @Razzle11Grinds on Twitter, make sure to give me a follow as I’ll occasionally make updates to the advice in the article out on Twitter as well as inside our coaching forums.  With that said, let’s get it started!

My Take on a Consistent MLB DFS Process – Looking at Pitchers

I always start an MLB slate by looking at pitching, not only do you get a grasp on who the pitchers are that you want to target, but gives you a holistic look at the slate as well. Breaking down pitching also gives you an idea of what offenses are in good spots against bad/vulnerable pitchers. I start my research by going straight to the  MLB Carnage Report this is where we can analyze all the pitchers on the slate in a compact, yet detailed manner. Below are the three pitchers that jumped out to me at first glance, good or bad.

  • Zack Wheeler
  • Max Scherzer
  • Blake Snell

We have a BRAND NEW update to our MLB Domination Station lineup optimizer with advanced user-controlled scoring systems inside.  You control how the lineups are built from three main uses of our projections: Points-based, DFSA Grades, or the unique blend of Hybrid Scoring!  The Domination Station will help you create 150 of the highest projected lineups in a matter of minutes. Cleveland Indians (-115) @ Baltimore Orioles

Pitchers:

Indians – JC Mejia

Orioles – Keegan Akin

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 8.5. I wish the offenses in this game were stronger as I would like to pick on the pitching. Cleveland has a decent bullpen while the Orioles aren’t known to be strong as far as staff goes. We may see the Indians allow Mejia to go 2-3 innings with Morgan as the potential piggyback. Morgan was really bad in his debut so he would be a plus match-up for the Orioles bats.

Oakland Athletics (-130) @ Colorado Rockies

Pitchers:

Athletics – Frankie Montas

Rockies – Jon Gray

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 10.5. I have to dig more into the pitch profile breakdown in this game. Montas is a guy with impressive upside and he gets a plus match-up against a weak lineup but he’s so very volatile. Gray has learned to pitch in Coors but he sacrifices Ks and I am not sure you want to rely on allowing contact against the top part of the OAK lineup.

OAK 5-star plays: Matt Olson

4-star plays: Stephen Piscotty, Tony Kemp

GPP Note: Team ISO of .170 against RHPs this season.

Detroit Tigers @ Chicago White Sox (-160)

Pitchers:

Tigers – Spencer Turnbull

White Sox – Dallas Keuchel

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 8.5. Turnbull is a guy that seems to limit the damage a lot of the time. I like the way that a couple of the White Sox bats are swinging it but not sure I can fully stack them as they haven’t destroyed RHPs yet this season. Keuchel draws a great match-up from a numbers standpoint as the Tigers are weak and they strike out a ton against LHPs. A few Tigers bats have strong BvP against Keuchel in their careers.

DET 5-star plays: Jonathan Schoop

4-star plays: Robbie Grossman, Jeimer Candelario

GPP Note: Team ISO of .109 against LHPs this season.

CWS 5-star plays: Yoan Moncada

4-star plays: Jose Abreu, Jake Lamb

MIL 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Christian Yelich, Avisail Garcia

GPP Note: Team ISO of .142 against RHPs this season.

Miami Marlins (-111) @ Pittsburgh Pirates

Pitchers:

Marlins – Cody Poteet

Pirates – Mitch Keller

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 7.5. Both of these SPs seem to offer enough upside to be viable in GPPs but I just don’t know how much we can trust them, despite plus match-ups. There are a few bats in this game that are swinging it decently but I may end up avoiding this game altogether as there just doesn’t seem to be much that stands out.

MIA 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Corey Dickerson, Jazz Chisholm

GPP Note: Team ISO of .127 against RHPs this season.

PIT 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Adam Frazier, Bryan Reynolds

GPP Note: Team ISO of .117 against RHPs this season.

Los Angeles Dodgers (-125) @ Atlanta Braves

Pitchers:

Dodgers – Julio Urias

Braves – Ian Anderson

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 9. I was shocked to see a total at 9 with these 2 SPs taking the mound. I realize that both offenses are very dangerous but it must mean that it’s supposed to be warm in Atlanta on Friday night. The ball certainly travels well in Atlanta so we might have to consider both offenses. Anderson has given up more power to RHBs so far this season.

LAD 5-star plays: Mookie Betts

4-star plays: Justin Turner

GPP Note: Team ISO of .173 against RHPs this season.

ATL 5-star plays: Ronald Acuna Jr

4-star plays: Ozzie Albies, Dansby Swanson

TEX 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Adolis Garcia, Nick Solak

GPP Note: Team ISO of .142 against LHPs this season.

Cincinnati Reds @ St Louis Cardinals (-130)

Pitchers:

Reds – Luis Castillo

Cardinals – Kwang-Hyun Kim

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 8.5. The opening total here seems low based on how well the Cardinals have hit Castillo in the past and how terribly he has thrown the baseball this season. Kim hasn’t been very sharp over his last couple of starts and the Vegas line has the game a bit closer than I would have thought. I really like the Cardinals side but don’t forget about a one-off from the CIN side.

CIN 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Nick Castellanos

GPP Note: Team ISO of .155 against LHPs this season.

STL 5-star plays: Dylan Carlson

4-star plays: Tommy Edman, Nolan Arenado, Tyler O’Neill

GPP Note: Team ISO of .155 against RHPs this season.

Chicago Cubs @ San Francisco Giants

Pitchers:

Cubs – Jake Arrieta

Giants – Undecided

Rundown:

Waiting on the Vegas information.

CHC 5-star plays: Anthony Rizzo

4-star plays: Kris Bryant, Willson Contreras

GPP Note: Team ISO of .212 over the last week.

SF 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Alex Dickerson, Brandon Crawford

GPP Note: Team ISO of .182 against RHPs this season.

Washington Nationals @ Philadelphia Phillies (-111)

Pitchers:

Nationals – Max Scherzer

Phillies – Zack Wheeler

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 7. Great SP match-up in this game and I am shocked to see that Scherzer is the underdog against a struggling PHI squad. There are a couple of bats in this game that has strong BvP histories but I find it really tough to target bats against these SPs. I would be more likely to mini-stack against each as Scherzer can allow HRs and WSH have seen their offense heat up.

WSH 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Trea Turner, Juan Soto

GPP Note: Team ISO of .136 against RHPs this season.

PHI 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Odubel Herrera

GPP Note: Team ISO of .142 against RHPs this season.

Houston Astros @ Toronto Blue Jays (-121)

Pitchers:

Astros – Zack Greinke

Blue Jays – Hyun-Jin Ryu

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 8.5. Very interesting match-up here as we get the name SP in Greinke and the SP, in Ryu, that seems to go overlooked. I have been stacking against Greinke for much of the season and I will again as he just doesn’t have dominant stuff. Toronto poses a huge problem for him. Ryu is a steady SP who generally limits baserunners. The match-up is difficult for him as well because a number of Astros hit LHPs well.

HOU 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Jose Altuve, Yuli Gurriel

GPP Note: Team ISO of .159 against LHPs this season.

TOR 5-star plays: Bo Bichette, Vlad Guerrero Jr

4-star plays: Teoscar Hernandez, Marcus Semien

GPP Note: Team ISO of .189 against RHPs this season.

Seattle Mariners @ Los Angeles Angels

Pitchers:

Mariners – Robert Dugger

Angels – Shohei Ohtani

Rundown:

Waiting on the Vegas information.

SEA 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Kyle Seager

GPP Note: Team ISO of .156 against RHPs this season.

LAA 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Jared Walsh

GPP Note: Team ISO of .169 against RHPs this season.

Stacks of the Day: Main Slate

  1. San Diego Padres
  2. St Louis Cardinals
  3. Toronto Blue Jays

MLB Dinger of the Day – Bo Bichette, Toronto Blue Jays

Listen, I just think that Greinke is walking a dangerous line because of the contact he allows. Toronto is loaded with power, especially against RHPs and I think one of them goes deep today. I went with Bichette but it was a toss-up between him, Vladdy Jr, Semien, and Grichuk. I have been nailing my Dinger calls of late, whether they be in here or in the sheets. This one is mostly a gut feeling.
