Happy MLB Season and welcome to another year of the DFS Army MLB Full Count! You have to start your research somewhere, and oftentimes going game by game and breaking down every matchup and its key players is the first step in our process. My name is Eric, @Razzle11Grinds on Twitter, make sure to give me a follow as I’ll occasionally make updates to the advice in the article out on Twitter as well as inside our coaching forums. With that said, let’s get it started!
My Take on a Consistent MLB DFS Process – Looking at Pitchers
I always start an MLB slate by looking at pitching, not only do you get a grasp on who the pitchers are that you want to target, but gives you a holistic look at the slate as well. Breaking down pitching also gives you an idea of what offenses are in good spots against bad/vulnerable pitchers. I start my research by going straight to the MLB Carnage Report this is where we can analyze all the pitchers on the slate in a compact, yet detailed manner. Below are the three pitchers that jumped out to me at first glance, good or bad.
- Alek Manoah (good)
- Lance Lynn (good)
- Randy Dobnak (bad)

Watching the weather is half the battle when it comes to MLB DFS. The DFS Army Weather Station has you covered, from games that have delay and postponement potential to games that could have significant winds that will play a role in selecting a team to stack or a pitcher to use.

Oakland Athletics (-140) @ Seattle Mariners
Pitchers:
Athletics – Sean Manaea
Mariners – Chris Flexen
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 8. Manaea is going to be a popular play in my builds as I just don’t think highly of SEA especially with the loss of Kyle Lewis from the middle of the lineup. Flexen allows plenty of contact so we can look for some power from the Oakland bats like Olson and Canha. I am interested in seeing the status of Laureano.
OAK 5-star plays: Matt Olson
4-star plays: Mark Canha
GPP Note: Team ISO of .171 against RHPs this season.
SEA 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Mitch Haniger
GPP Note: Team ISO of .165 against LHPs this season.
Boston Red Sox @ Houston Astros (-130)
Pitchers:
Red Sox – Nick Pivetta
Astros – Framber Valdez
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 9. I was shocked to see a total of 9 for this game. I know that Pivetta has had a few struggles lately but both of these SPs are solid. Valdez is a guy that I normally really like but he’s probably going to be sitting in the 80-85 pitch range in his second start of the season.
BOS 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: JD Martinez, Xander Bogaerts
GPP Note: Team ISO of .163 against LHPs this season.
HOU 5-star plays: Jose Altuve
4-star plays: Kyle Tucker
GPP Note: Team ISO of .158 against RHPs this season.

Chicago White Sox (-160) @ Cleveland Indians
Pitchers:
White Sox – Lance Lynn
Indians – Eli Morgan/JC Mejia
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 8.5. We have to get an update in the morning on who the Indians plan to run out there. Mejia would be an opener while Morgan could start traditionally. Lynn is in a great spot as I just don’t think CLE is a difficult match-up for him. The White Sox bats feel like they should be in a great spot on the early slate.
CWS 5-star plays: Yoan Moncada
4-star plays: Tim Anderson, Jose Abreu
GPP Note: Team ISO of .140 against RHPs this season.
CLE 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Jose Ramirez
GPP Note: Team ISO of .166 against RHPs this season.
New York Mets (-111) @ Arizona Diamondbacks
Pitchers:
Mets – David Peterson
D’Backs – Madison Bumgarner
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 8.5. Both of these LHPs are going to be in my pitcher pool but with some hesitations. Bumgarner had looked like he figured it out but then he’s struggled the last couple of starts. Peterson flashes strong ability but then he has lapses. I like the match-up for Peterson but we know the D’Backs have a couple of guys with power against LHPs.
NYM 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Pete Alonso, Jonathan Villar
GPP Note: Team ISO of .132 against LHPs this season.
ARI 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Eduardo Escobar, Christian Walker
GPP Note: Team ISO of .186 against LHPs this season.
Washington Nationals @ Atlanta Braves
Pitchers:
Nationals – Undecided
Braves – Drew Smyly
Rundown:
Waiting on the Vegas information.
WSH 5-star plays: Trea Turner
4-star plays: Yan Gomes, Ryan Zimmerman
GPP Note: Team ISO of .142 against LHPs this season.
ATL 5-star plays: Freddie Freeman
4-star plays: Ronald Acuna Jr., Austin Riley
GPP Note: Team ISO of .197 against RHPs this season.
Tampa Bay Rays @ New York Yankees (-130)
Pitchers:
Rays – Shane McClanahan
Yankees – Jordan Montgomery
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 8. There are some strong BvP spots on the TB side while the Yankees have really struggled at the plate against LHPs, aside from Judge. McClanahan has a big-time arm with huge upside and K ability. Montgomery is capable of surprising but he’s also capable of going just 4 and allowing 4-6 runs.
TB 5-star plays: Manuel Margot
4-star plays: Randy Arozarena, Mike Zunino
GPP Note: Team ISO of .158 against LHPs this season.
NYY 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Aaron Judge
GPP Note: Team ISO of .143 against LHPs this season.

St Louis Cardinals @ Los Angeles Dodgers (-216)
Pitchers:
Cardinals – Carlos Martinez
Dodgers – Walker Buehler
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 8. I keep stacking against Carlos Martinez so I will not be stopping now. The Dodgers should bust out at some point and if they get the lead early, they get into the worst part of the STL bullpen. Buehler has elite upside but he lacks consistency. He’s thrown the ball well against the guys on the Cardinals.
STL 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Tyler O’Neill, Nolan Arenado
GPP Note: Team ISO of .152 against RHPs this season.
LAD 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Max Muncy, Cody Bellinger
GPP Note: Team ISO of .169 against RHPs this season.
Philadelphia Phillies @ Cincinnati Reds (EVEN)
Pitchers:
Phillies – Spencer Howard
Reds – Vladimir Gutierrez
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 8.5. If we see Howard actually get to throw 5-6 innings, I think he’s interesting but this game could blow up with runs too. Gutierrez didn’t pick up many strikeouts in his first start so that makes me a bit worried for contact in a ballpark that is a plus for power.
PHI 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Rhys Hoskins
GPP Note: Team ISO of .135 against RHPs this season.
CIN 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Jesse Winker, Nick Castellanos
GPP Note: Team ISO of .188 against RHPs this season.
Miami Marlins @ Toronto Blue Jays (-145)
Pitchers:
Marlins – Pablo Lopez
Blue Jays – Alek Manoah
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 8.5. Manoah looked absolutely studly in his MLB debut against the Yankees. He now takes on the weak MIA squad, so it’s hard to not get really excited about using him. Lopez is a strong SP but this TOR lineup is so difficult to deal with as we saw Alcantara struggle on Tuesday.
MIA 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Jesus Aguilar
GPP Note: Team ISO of .122 against RHPs this season.
TOR 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Vlad Guerrero Jr.
GPP Note: Team ISO of .185 against RHPs this season.
Texas Rangers @ Colorado Rockies (-111)
Pitchers:
Rangers – Jordan Lyles
Rockies – Antonio Senzatela
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 10.5. Now we get a double-digit total in Coors and I will be more inclined to use mini-stacks of these teams. I honestly don’t think I want to full-stack either of them as the offenses aren’t overly strong. Lyles is the better pitcher of the two and he does take on the weaker offense but it’s just not a spot to look at either SP.
TEX 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Adolis Garcia
GPP Note: Team ISO of .150 against RHPs this season.
COL 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Ryan McMahon, Matt Adams
GPP Note: Team ISO of .138 against RHPs this season.
Stacks of the Day: Main Slate
- Atlanta Braves
- Los Angeles Dodgers
- Minnesota Twins (only because Harvey is on 3-days rest)
MLB Dinger of the Day – Austin Riley, Atlanta Braves
