My Take on a Consistent MLB DFS Process – Looking at Pitchers

I always start an MLB slate by looking at pitching, not only do you get a grasp on who the pitchers are that you want to target, but gives you a holistic look at the slate as well. Breaking down pitching also gives you an idea of what offenses are in good spots against bad/vulnerable pitchers. I start my research by going straight to the  MLB Carnage Report this is where we can analyze all the pitchers on the slate in a compact, yet detailed manner. Below are the three pitchers that jumped out to me at first glance, good or bad.

  • Max Scherzer
  • Yu Darvish
  • Sammy Long

We have a BRAND NEW update to our MLB Domination Station lineup optimizer with advanced user-controlled scoring systems inside.  You control how the lineups are built from three main uses of our projections: Points-based, DFSA Grades, or the unique blend of Hybrid Scoring!  The Domination Station will help you create 150 of the highest projected lineups in a matter of minutes. Houston Astros (-195) @ Detroit Tigers

Pitchers:

Astros – Jake Odorizzi

Tigers – Tarik Skubal

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 10. Houston games have had monster totals all week long. I think that Skubal is a legit SP but this match-up is not the one that I want to be using him in. Odorizzi has turned it around recently and makes for an interesting GPP option. He’s always capable of getting hit around.

HOU 5-star plays: Michael Brantley, Jose Altuve

4-star plays: Yuli Gurriel, Carlos Correa

GPP Note: Team ISO of .168 against LHPs this season.

DET 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Jonathan Schoop, Nomar Mazara

GPP Note: Team ISO of .156 against RHPs this season.

Pittsburgh Pirates @ St Louis Cardinals (-145)

Pitchers:

Pirates – Max Kranick

Cardinals – Johan Oviedo

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 9. Kranick is making his MLB debut and I am intrigued by him to a degree. He’s min-priced on DK and he doesn’t allow many HRs (at least in the minors). He hasn’t been a huge K guy but he does have just over 1 per inning so far this season. Reynolds is swinging the bat extremely well for the Pirates while Oviedo is very mediocre.

PIT 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Adam Frazier, Bryan Reynolds

GPP Note: Team ISO of .126 against RHPs this season.

STL 5-star plays: Nolan Arenado

4-star plays: Yadier Molina, Dylan Carlson

GPP Note: Team ISO of .147 against RHPs this season.

Washington Nationals (-135) @ Miami Marlins

Pitchers:

Nationals – Max Scherzer

Marlins – Sandy Alcantara

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 6.5. We get a great SP match-up, in a pitcher’s park. A few of the Nationals bats have hit Alcantara well, while Schwarber is the hottest hitter on the planet. I will have a Nationals stack for GPP purposes but I would rather use one-offs or a mini-stack with such a low total.

WSH 5-star plays: Kyle Schwarber

4-star plays: Juan Soto, Trea Turner

GPP Note: Team ISO of .143 against RHPs this season.

MIA 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Miguel Rojas

GPP Note: Team ISO of .135 against RHPs this season.

Kansas City Royals @ Texas Rangers (EVEN)

Pitchers:

Royals -Brady Singer

Rangers – Jordan Lyles

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 9. Both of these SPs are capable of putting up a shut-down type performance. That also means they are capable of putting up a blow-up type performance as well. I think both offenses go somewhat overlooked despite a higher total so I am drawn to mini-stacks of both teams.

KC 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Salvador Perez, Whit Merrifield

GPP Note: Team ISO of .144 against RHPs this season.

TEX 5-star plays: Joey Gallo

4-star plays: Nate Lowe, Adolis Garcia

GPP Note: Team ISO of .175 over the last week.

Seattle Mariners @ Chicago White Sox (-177)

Pitchers:

Mariners – Undecided

White Sox – Dallas Keuchel

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 8.5.

SEA 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: JP Crawford

GPP Note: Team ISO of .162 against LHPs this season.

CWS 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Yasmani Grandal, Yoan Moncada

GPP Note: Team ISO of .137 against RHPs this season.

DFS MLB Weather Picks

New York Yankees (-157) @ Boston Red Sox

Pitchers:

Yankees – Gerrit Cole

Red Sox – Eduardo Rodriguez

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 8.5. The Yankees have hit Rodriguez decently well in their careers so that’s the side I am going to prefer. Cole is a tough match-up for Boston, even with the lack of substance to help his grip. I am very interested in seeing how he fares in this one. Gleyber has dominated E-Rod in his career from an extra-base hit standpoint.

NYY 5-star plays: Gleyber Torres

4-star plays: Aaron Judge, Luke Voit

GPP Note: Team ISO of .164 against LHPs this season.

BOS 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Danny Santana

GPP Note: Santana is 8 for 12 against Cole.

Philadelphia Phillies @ New York Mets

Pitchers:

Phillies – Zack Wheeler

Mets – Marcus Stroman

Rundown:

Waiting on the Vegas information.

PHI 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: JT Realmuto

GPP Note: Team ISO of .145 against RHPs this season.

NYM 5-star plays: Dominic Smith

4-star plays: Michael Conforto

GPP Note: Team ISO of .141 against RHPs this season.

Los Angeles Angels @ Tampa Bay Rays (-145)

Pitchers:

Angels – Patrick Sandoval

Rays – Ryan Yarbrough

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 8. Sandoval has been decent of late but he still can have HR issues. He receives a projected K bump against a TB team that can strike out a lot against LHPs. I really hope that Zunino is in the lineup for TB with how he’s been swinging it plus his history against LHPs. Yarbrough never excites me but he’s capable of being solid any time he takes the mound.

LAA 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Shohei Ohtani, Anthony Rendon

GPP Note: Team ISO of .181 against LHPs this season.

TB 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Mike Zunino

GPP Note: Team ISO of .139 against LHPs this season.

Arizona Diamondbacks @ San Diego Padres (-280)

Pitchers:

D’Backs – Zac Gallen

Padres – Yu Darvish

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 7.5. Gallen hasn’t looked the part much this season and that’s disappointing because I think he’s going to end up a top-10ish pitcher in the N.L. Darvish is in an elite spot and he might see lowered ownership after ARI just went off against Lamet and the Padres bullpen.

ARI 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: David Peralta

GPP Note: Team ISO of .128 against RHPs this season.

SD 5-star plays: Fernando Tatis Jr.

4-star plays: Trent Grisham

GPP Note: Team ISO of .160 against RHPs this season.

Chicago Cubs @ Los Angeles Dodgers (-190)

Pitchers:

Cubs – Adbert Alzolay

Dodgers – Clayton Kershaw

Rundown:

This game opened with a total of 8. The Sunday night game should be a good game to watch. A couple of Cubs bats have had success against Kershaw but it’s so hard to pick on him. Alzolay has been decent this season but the Dodgers offer plenty of danger in their lineup, even if they aren’t 100% healthy.

CHC 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo

GPP Note: Team ISO of .171 against LHPs this season.

LAD 5-star plays: Max Muncy

4-star plays: Justin Turner

GPP Note: Team ISO of .157 against RHPs this season.

Atlanta Braves @ Cincinnati Reds

Pitchers:

Braves – Undecided

Reds – Tyler Mahle

Rundown:

Waiting on the Vegas information.

ATL 5-star plays: Ozzie Albies

4-star plays: Freddie Freeman

GPP Note: Team ISO of .193 against RHPs this season.

CIN 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Jesse Winker, Nick Castellanos

GPP Note: Team ISO of .215 at home this season.

Baltimore Orioles @ Toronto Blue Jays (-245)

Pitchers:

Orioles – Jorge Lopez

Blue Jays – Ross Stripling

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 11. This is the game to attack for me. I am willing to game stack this one multiple way while also using Stripling in my player pool. He’s shown the ability to shut down offenses but he’s also been blown up at times this season. The Blue Jays are always one of the most popular offenses and that’s not going to change at any point this season. We just eat the chalk in our stacks while maybe making 1 pivot to a lower owned 4th or 5th bat.

BAL 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Trey Mancini, Ryan Mountcastle

GPP Note: Team ISO of .148 against RHPs this season.

TOR 5-star plays: Vlad Guerrero Jr.

4-star plays: Bo Bichette, George Springer

GPP Note: Team ISO of .192 against RHPs this season.

Cleveland Indians @ Minnesota Twins

Pitchers:

Indians – Sam Hentges

Twins – Kenta Maeda or JA Happ

Rundown:

Waiting on the Vegas information.

CLE 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Cesar Hernandez, Eddie Rosario

GPP Note: Team ISO of .164 against RHPs this season.

MIN 5-star plays: Nelson Cruz

4-star plays: Josh Donaldson

GPP Note: Team ISO of .184 against RHPs this season.

MLB DFS Winning Lineups $50,000

Oakland Athletics @ San Francisco Giants (-130)

Pitchers:

Athletics – Cole Irvin

Giants – Sammy Long

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 8. Both of these LHPs are capable of putting together strong performances and shutting down the opposing offenses. The issue is that both of these offenses have hit LHPs very well this season, at least from a power standpoint. I actually think Long would be my preferred play of the 2 SPs and as far as bats go, I would lean towards mini-stacks from both sides.

OAK 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Ramon Laureano, Matt Oson

GPP Note: Team ISO of .184 against LHPs this season.

SF 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Buster Posey, Austin Slater

GPP Note: Team ISO of .180 against LHPs this season.

Colorado Rockies @ Milwaukee Brewers (-180)

Pitchers:

Rockies – Chi Chi Gonzalez

Brewers – Eric Lauer

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 9. For my GPP builds, I am going to be really high on COL today. A few of the COL bats have had success against Lauer and I like to call it just a gut feeling. I could see this being a higher scoring game as the Brewers could definitely do a lot of damage against Gonzalez as well.

COL 5-star plays: Trevor Story

4-star plays: CJ Cron, Charlie Blackmon

GPP Note: Team ISO of .176 against LHPs this season.

MIL 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Kolten Wong, Christian Yelich

GPP Note: Team ISO of .146 against RHPs this season.

Stacks of the Day: Main Slate

  1. Toronto Blue Jays
  2. Houston Astros
