Happy MLB Season and welcome to another year of the DFS Army MLB Full Count! You have to start your research somewhere, and oftentimes going game by game and breaking down every matchup and its key players is the first step in our process. My name is Eric, @Razzle11Grinds on Twitter, make sure to give me a follow as I’ll occasionally make updates to the advice in the article out on Twitter as well as inside our coaching forums. With that said, let’s get it started!
My Take on a Consistent MLB DFS Process – Looking at Pitchers
I always start an MLB slate by looking at pitching, not only do you get a grasp on who the pitchers are that you want to target, but gives you a holistic look at the slate as well. Breaking down pitching also gives you an idea of what offenses are in good spots against bad/vulnerable pitchers. I start my research by going straight to the MLB Carnage Report this is where we can analyze all the pitchers on the slate in a compact, yet detailed manner. Below are the three pitchers that jumped out to me at first glance, good or bad.
- Hyun-Jin Ryu
- Taijuan Walker
- Kenta Maeda

Miami Marlins @ Chicago Cubs (-145)
Pitchers:
Marlins – Zach Thompson
Cubs – Alec Mills
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 9.5. Seeing the total I have to assume the weather is excellent for hitting at Wrigley. Mills relies on movement and changing speeds and that’s always dangerous for a pitcher. I think the Cubs are in a great spot against Thompson. They have an offense that can explode and hit 3-4 HRs before you even realize it.
MIA 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Starling Marte, Adam Duvall
GPP Note: Team ISO of .131 against RHPs this season.
CHC 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Anthony Rizzo, Joc Pederson
GPP Note: Team ISO of .174 against RHPS this season.
Chicago White Sox @ Houston Astros (-140)
Pitchers:
White Sox – Dallas Keuchel
Astros – Lance McCullers Jr.
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 8.5. McCullers returned from the IL and threw 77 pitches so I would assume that he’s good to get to around 90 in this start. The White Sox have a dangerous offense but they have weakened due to some injuries. Keuchel heads to Houston to face off with his long-time team. The loss of Bregman hurts the lineup overall but there is still plenty of punch against LHPs.
CWS 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Tim Anderson, Jose Abreu
GPP Note: Team ISO of .140 against RHPs this season.
HOU 5-star plays: Jose Altuve
4-star plays: Yuli Gurriel, Michael Brantley
GPP Note: Team ISO of .174 against LHPs this season.
Watching the weather is half the battle when it comes to MLB DFS. The DFS Army Weather Station has you covered, from games that have delay and postponement potential to games that could have significant winds that will play a role in selecting a team to stack or a pitcher to use.

Toronto Blue Jays (-203) @ Baltimore Orioles
Pitchers:
Blue Jays – Hyun-Jin Ryu
Orioles – Matt Harvey
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 10. Toronto is going to be super popular and I am not going to avoid them. They line up to have a massive total against a pitcher who can get hit hard in just a few innings. Ryu is a guy that I always believe it but he’s had some tougher outings recently. I do think he has some success against this BAL lineup today.
TOR 5-star plays: Vlad Guerrero Jr., Marcus Semien
4-star plays: Randal Grichuk, Bo Bichette
GPP Note: Team ISO of .190 against RHPs this season.
BAL 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Anthony Santander
GPP Note: Team ISO of .178 against LHPs this season.
Boston Red Sox (-135) @ Kansas City Royals
Pitchers:
Red Sox – Nathan Eovaldi
Royals – Mike Minor
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 9.5. Another high total game on this Sunday actually surprises me a little bit. Minor is capable of being pretty strong while Eovaldi has been solid and has really kept the ball in the ballpark this season. I know the Red Sox have been swinging hot bats so they are going to carry some ownership.
BOS 5-star plays: JD Martinez
4-star plays: Xander Bogaerts
GPP Note: Team ISO of .224 over the last 7 days.
KC 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Carlos Santana, Adalberto Mondesi
GPP Note: Team ISO of .143 against RHPs this season.
Los Angeles Dodgers (-190) @ Arizona Diamondbacks
Pitchers:
Dodgers – Tony Gonsolin
Diamondbacks – Alex Young
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 9.5. Yet another game with a high total that I am a little surprised about. I know the Dodgers are a very potent team but the Diamondbacks are the opposite of potent. Gonsolin got up to 81 pitches in his last start but still only managed to go 3.1 innings. He has 8 walks in his 5.1 innings so far. His control issues might bring a D’Backs stack into play for GPP purposes.
LAD 5-star plays: Chris Taylor
4-star plays: AJ Pollock, Justin Turner
GPP Note: Team ISO of .167 against LHPs this season.
ARI 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Ketel Marte, Eduardo Escobar
GPP Note: Team ISO of .134 against RHPs this season.

Detroit Tigers @ Los Angeles Angels (-157)
Pitchers:
Tigers – Casey Mize
Angels – Dylan Bundy
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 9. I honestly could see this game finishing 4-3 or I could see it being 8-7 with these two SPs. Mize is a promising young arm but he has ups and downs while he can struggle missing bats. Bundy has been a different guy this season as he looks to have regressed. Both of these teams have a few guys swinging it really well right now.
DET 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Jonathan Schoop, Miguel Cabrera
GPP Note: Team ISO of .158 against RHPs this season.
LAA 5-star plays: Shohei Ohtani
4-star plays: Justin Upton, Jared Walsh
GPP Note: Team ISO of .171 against RHPs this season.
Cincinnati Reds @ San Diego Padres (-153)
Pitchers:
Reds – Luis Castillo
Padres – Dinelson Lamet
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 8. Seeing a total of 8 when a bunch of games is above 9 really makes me want to rely on the SPs in this one. Castillo has started to flash his plus ability and now gets to face an SD lineup that could be without Tatis. Lamet has always had big-time K ability and while the Reds can hit RHPs well, they have struggled away from home.
CIN 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Joey Votto, Tucker Barnhart
GPP Note: Team ISO of .182 against RHPs this season.
SD 5-star plays: Fernando Tatis Jr (injured again?)
4-star plays: Eric Hosmer, Trent Grisham
GPP Note: Team ISO of .149 against RHPs this season.
St Louis Cardinals @ Atlanta Braves – Game 1
Pitchers:
Cardinals – Adam Wainwright
Braves – Bryse Wilson
Rundown:
Waiting on the Vegas information. Remember that this is a 7-inning game.
STL 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Yadier Molina, Nolan Arenado
GPP Note: Team ISO of .146 against RHPs this season.
ATL 5-star plays: Freddie Freeman
4-star plays: Ronald Acuna Jr., Ozzie Albies
GPP Note: Team ISO of .189 against RHPs this season.
St Louis Cardinals @ Atlanta Braves – Game 2
Pitchers:
Cardinals – Kwang-Hyun Kim
Braves – Drew Smyly
Rundown:
Waiting on the Vegas information. Remember that this is a 7-inning game.
STL 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Yadier Molina, Nolan Arenado
GPP Note: Team ISO of .179 against LHPs this season.
ATL 5-star plays: Freddie Freeman
4-star plays: Ronald Acuna Jr., Ozzie Albies
GPP Note: Team ISO of .198 against LHPs this season.
Philadelphia Phillies @ San Francisco Giants (-130)
Pitchers:
Phillies – Zach Eflin
Giants – Sammy Long
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 8. We have to pay attention to the Giants as the day goes on. They might deploy an opener ahead of Long as they have in his first two appearances. I think he has some solid stuff with upside and he surprised me in his last appearance. He allowed 4 runs really early but he settled down and was able to get 5 innings completed in just 65 pitches. Eflin has shut down the Giants once already this season.
PHI 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Rhys Hoskins, Andrew McCutchen
GPP Note: Team ISO of .156 against LHPs this season.
SF 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Mike Yastrzemski, Brandon Belt
GPP Note: Team ISO of .188 against RHPs this season.

Cleveland Indians @ Pittsburgh Pirates (-125)
Pitchers:
Indians – Sam Hentges
Pirates – JT Brubaker
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 8.5. Brubaker is an arm that has surprised me at times while frustrating me at others. He’s actually the favorite here and that piques my curiosity. Surprisingly, the Pirates have hit LHPs for more power than RHPs this season. I am very interested in a Hayes-Reynolds mini-stack from PIT.
CLE 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Jose Ramirez, Bobby Bradley
GPP Note: Team ISO of .159 against RHPs this season.
PIT 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Bryan Reynolds, Ke’Bryan Hayes
GPP Note: Team ISO of .130 against LHPs this season.
Tampa Bay Rays (-145) @ Seattle Mariners
Pitchers:
Rays – Shane McClanahan
Mariners – Marco Gonzales
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 8. A battle of two very different LHPs as McClanahan has thrown the 2nd most pitches of 100+ MPH this season while Gonzales is going to rely on getting soft contact and chases. I could see either pitcher getting blown up but I also can see a lower totaled final score. Ty France has been destroying baseballs of late so he feels like a great bat to get exposure to, even as a one-off.
TB 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Randy Arozarena, Austin Meadows
GPP Note: Team ISO of .144 against LHPs this season.
SEA 5-star plays: Ty France
4-star plays: Mitch Haniger, JP Crawford
GPP Note: Team ISO of .167 against LHPs this season.
Milwaukee Brewers (-130) @ Colorado Rockies
Pitchers:
Brewers – Eric Lauer
Rockies – Chi Chi Gonzalez
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 12. It’s been a while since I remember seeing a 12 total in a game. I understand the total based on the pitchers taking the mound. I actually think that I prefer the Rockies’ side against Lauer. They have been solid against LHPs this season so it might be time to be all over them. Milwaukee has bats that are capable but they lack consistency in their performances.
MIL 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Christian Yelich, Omar Narvaez
GPP Note: Team ISO of .149 against RHPs this season.
COL 5-star plays: Charlie Blackmon, CJ Cron
4-star plays: Trevor Story, Elias Diaz
GPP Note: Team ISO of .173 against LHPs this season.
New York Mets (-121) @ Washington Nationals
Pitchers:
Mets – Taijuan Walker
Nationals – Patrick Corbin
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 8. Walker has really impressed me this season and while the Nationals lineup has some danger to it, I think he has a chance for a strong performance. Corbin has had some better starts after a terrible start to the season but the Mets have hit him decently well.
NYM 5-star plays: Jonathan Villar, Dominic Smith
4-star plays: Francisco Lindor, Pete Alonso
GPP Note: Team ISO of .142 against LHPs this season.
WSH 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Alex Avila, Kyle Schwarber
GPP Note: Team ISO of .136 against RHPs this season.
Oakland Athletics @ New York Yankees (-130)
Pitchers:
Athletics – Sean Manaea
Yankees – Jordan Montgomery
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 9.5. Back to a game with a high total, we get two LHPs facing off. Both of these teams have plenty of power against LHPs so we could see a game with 5-6 HRs. I was surprised to see that Matt Olson has 8 HRs against LHPs already this season. The A’s lineup is much better with Laureano back.
OAK 5-star plays: Matt Olson
4-star plays: Ramon Laureano, Mark Canha
GPP Note: Team ISO of .186 against RHPs this season.
NYY 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Aaron Judge, Gary Sanchez
GPP Note: Team ISO of .160 against LHPs this season.
Minnesota Twins (-157) @ Texas Rangers
Pitchers:
Twins – Kenta Maeda
Rangers – Dane Dunning
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 9. We finally got the return of Buxton and I think he has a game today. It’s mostly a gut-feeling call but I like my chances. We know that the Twins offer plenty of power but there are also some Ks and easy outs in the lineup. Both Dunning and Maeda are going to be on my radar today, even with a 9 total.
MIN 5-star plays: Byron Buxton
4-star plays: Nelson Cruz, Alex Kirilloff
GPP Note: Team ISO of .179 against RHPs this season.
TEX 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Joey Gallo, Adolis Garcia
GPP Note: Team ISO of .147 against RHPs this season.
Stacks of the Day: Main Slate
- Toronto Blue Jays
- Houston Astros
- Oakland Athletics
MLB Dinger of the Day – Trevor Story, Colorado Rockies
