Happy MLB Season and welcome to another year of the DFS Army MLB Full Count! You have to start your research somewhere, and oftentimes going game by game and breaking down every matchup and its key players is the first step in our process. My name is Eric, @Razzle11Grinds on Twitter, make sure to give me a follow as I’ll occasionally make updates to the advice in the article out on Twitter as well as inside our coaching forums. With that said, let’s get it started!
My Take on a Consistent MLB DFS Process – Looking at Pitchers
I always start an MLB slate by looking at pitching, not only do you get a grasp on who the pitchers are that you want to target, but gives you a holistic look at the slate as well. Breaking down pitching also gives you an idea of what offenses are in good spots against bad/vulnerable pitchers. I start my research by going straight to the MLB Carnage Report this is where we can analyze all the pitchers on the slate in a compact, yet detailed manner. Below are the three pitchers that jumped out to me at first glance, good or bad.
- Kevin Gausman
- Brandon Woodruff
- Shohei Ohtani

Chicago Cubs @ New York Mets (-130)
Pitchers:
Cubs – Kyle Hendricks
Mets – Marcus Stroman
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 7.5. If the Mets lineup was fully healthy, this would be a tough spot for Hendricks. With all of the injuries they have dealt with, he gets a bit of a boost but not sure it’s enough to put him on my radar. Stroman has been excellent for the Mets and his K numbers should be there against the Cubs. The Cubs are the kind of team that we should be using SPs against but also building stacks of in our GPPs.
CHC 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Anthony Rizzo, Javy Baez
GPP Note: Team ISO of .174 against RHPS this season.
NYM 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: James McCann, Pete Alonso
GPP Note: Team ISO of .145 against RHPs this season.
Chicago White Sox @ Houston Astros (-135)
Pitchers:
White Sox – Dylan Cease
Astros – Jose Urquidy
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 9. I really like both of these pitchers overall. Cease has shown me a ton of positives this season while Urquidy has flashed some upside for a couple of seasons now. I don’t think this is the spot to be on either of them as the offenses are just too dangerous. Could either side go nuts and be the nut stack of the slate? Sure, I believe so but I prefer to go with mini-stacks of these two offenses tonight.
CWS 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Tim Anderson, Jose Abreu
GPP Note: Team ISO of .140 against RHPs this season.
HOU 5-star plays: Michael Brantley
4-star plays: Alex Bregman, Jose Altuve
GPP Note: Team ISO of .170 against RHPs this season.
Watching the weather is half the battle when it comes to MLB DFS. The DFS Army Weather Station has you covered, from games that have delay and postponement potential to games that could have significant winds that will play a role in selecting a team to stack or a pitcher to use.

New York Yankees (-126) @ Toronto Blue Jays
Pitchers:
Yankees – Michael King
Blue Jays – TJ Zeuch
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 10.5. We should see plenty of offense in this game as the total is a bit nuts. The Blue Jays are always in my stack pool but they should be near the top tonight. The Yankees bats have been struggling overall but they get a plus spot and they are actually the favorite in this game. Stack this game multiple ways!
NYY 5-star plays: DJ LeMahieu
4-star plays: Giancarlo Stanton
GPP Note: Team ISO of .150 against RHPs this season.
TOR 5-star plays: Vlad Guerrero Jr.
4-star plays: Teoscar Hernandez, Bo Bichette
GPP Note: Team ISO of .193 against RHPs this season.

Detroit Tigers @ Los Angeles Angels (-216)
Pitchers:
Tigers – Matt Manning
Angels – Shohei Ohtani
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 9. Manning being called up is great to see from a pure baseball perspective. I am a bit shocked to see the total sitting so high as the Angels aren’t exactly lighting up the scoreboard. I wish the sites would find a way to allow us to use Ohtani as an SP AND as a bat.
DET 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Jonathan Schoop
GPP Note: Team ISO of .159 against RHPs this season.
LAA 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Shohei Ohtani, Jared Walsh
GPP Note: Team ISO of .171 against RHPs this season.
Cincinnati Reds @ San Diego Padres (-172)
Pitchers:
Reds – Wade Miley
Padres – Joe Musgrove
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 7.5. I can’t believe how much the Padres have struggled against LHPs so far in 2021. They have a lineup that should be able to smash them. I will keep stacking the Padres because I believe in what they are capable of doing. Musgrove has been pretty impressive and with the totals sitting the way they are, we have to consider him in our pool. The Reds have struggled quite a bit on the road this season but they do have a ton of power against RHPs.
CIN 5-star plays: Nick Castellanos
4-star plays: Joey Votto, Eugenio Suarez
GPP Note: Team ISO of .182 against RHPs this season.
SD 5-star plays: Fernando Tatis Jr
4-star plays: Manny Machado, Tommy Pham
GPP Note: Team ISO of .113 against LHPs this season.
St Louis Cardinals @ Atlanta Braves (-180)
Pitchers:
Cardinals – John Gant
Braves – Charlie Morton
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 9. Morton hasn’t been the sharp SP signing that I thought he would be for the Braves. He draws a somewhat difficult match-up but the Cardinals lineup is weaker without Edman. Gant finally was lit up, like I had been waiting for, in his last start and now pitches against a very dangerous offense.
STL 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Yadier Molina, Matt Carpenter
GPP Note: Team ISO of .151 against RHPs this season.
ATL 5-star plays: Ozzie Albies
4-star plays: Ronald Acuna Jr., Freddie Freeman
GPP Note: Team ISO of .189 against RHPs this season.
Arizona Diamondbacks @ San Francisco Giants (-203)
Pitchers:
D’Backs – Zac Gallen
Giants – Kevin Gausman
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 7.5. Gallen is returning from the IL so we have to see what kind of restrictions he has. When he is fully healthy, he is a promising young arm with some strong upside. Gausman has been absolutely elite this season and I love what he’s turned into. He is always going to be in my player pool.
ARI 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Ketel Marte
GPP Note: Team ISO of .136 against RHPs this season.
SF 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Buster Posey, Mike Yastrzemski
GPP Note: Team ISO of .188 against RHPs this season.

Baltimore Orioles @ Cleveland Indians (-152)
Pitchers:
Orioles – Jorge Lopez
Indians – Eli Morgan
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 9. I really want to be all about this game as both of these SPs can give it up. Lopez has some surprisingly solid starts but this just feels like a game with a bunch of offense. Morgan hasn’t looked very good at the MLB level so far and while the Orioles aren’t a great team, they do have some bats that can take advantage of him.
BAL 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Cedric Mullins
GPP Note: Team ISO of .148 against RHPs this season.
CLE 5-star plays: Bobby Bradley
4-star plays: Jose Ramirez, Amed Rosario
GPP Note: Team ISO of .159 against RHPs this season.
Tampa Bay Rays (-160) @ Seattle Mariners
Pitchers:
Rays – Rich Hill
Mariners – Justin Dunn
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 8.5. The Seattle bats have been swinging it pretty well of late so it will be interesting to see how they perform against the A.L.’s Pitch of the Month from May. Hill has been limited pitch count wise recently as he racked up a decent amount of pitches in May. The Rays bats will be up there for me as I think this could be a spot for them to score 7+.
TB 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Austin Meadows
GPP Note: Team ISO of .171 against RHPs this season.
SEA 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Kyle Seager, Tom Murphy
GPP Note: Team ISO of .162 against LHPs this season.
Milwaukee Brewers (-157) @ Colorado Rockies
Pitchers:
Brewers – Brandon Woodruff
Rockies – German Marquez
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 10. I actually prefer the SPs in this game, very similar to the other night when it was Gomber vs Lamet. Woodruff has been spectacular while he faces a pretty weak lineup. Marquez is capable of pitching well in Coors and the Brewers lineup just struck out a TON against Mahle.
MIL 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Christian Yelich, Omar Narvaez
GPP Note: Team ISO of .149 against RHPs this season.
COL 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Raimel Tapia
GPP Note: Team ISO of .138 against RHPs this season.
Stacks of the Day: Main Slate
- Atlanta Braves
- Toronto Blue Jays
- Tampa Bay Rays
MLB Dinger of the Day – Vlad Guerrero Jr, Toronto Blue Jays
