Happy MLB Season and welcome to another year of the DFS Army MLB Full Count! You have to start your research somewhere, and oftentimes going game by game and breaking down every matchup and its key players is the first step in our process. My name is Eric, @Razzle11Grinds on Twitter, make sure to give me a follow as I’ll occasionally make updates to the advice in the article out on Twitter as well as inside our coaching forums. With that said, let’s get it started!
My Take on a Consistent MLB DFS Process – Looking at Pitchers
I always start an MLB slate by looking at pitching, not only do you get a grasp on who the pitchers are that you want to target, but gives you a holistic look at the slate as well. Breaking down pitching also gives you an idea of what offenses are in good spots against bad/vulnerable pitchers. I start my research by going straight to the MLB Carnage Report this is where we can analyze all the pitchers on the slate in a compact, yet detailed manner. Below are the three pitchers that jumped out to me at first glance, good or bad.
- Jacob deGrom
- Zack Greinke
- Anthony DeSclafani

Chicago Cubs @ New York Mets
Pitchers:
Cubs – Robert Stock
Mets – Jacob deGrom
Rundown:
Waiting on the Vegas information. There’s a ton of question marks around the pitching in this game.
CHC 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Anthony Rizzo
GPP Note: Team ISO of .174 against RHPS this season.
NYM 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Francisco Lindor, Pete Alonso
GPP Note: Team ISO of .145 against RHPs this season.
Miami Marlins (-115) @ St Louis Cardinals
Pitchers:
Marlins – Sandy Alcantara
Cardinals – Johan Oviedo
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 8. Alcantara is the stronger SP in this game but he also takes on the more difficult lineup. Oviedo is going to give up some runs and base runners but the Marlins lack real upside as a stack, in my opinion. As much as I like Alcantara, I am not sure I will be getting to him much, if at all.
MIA 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Jazz Chisholm, Jesus Aguilar
GPP Note: Team ISO of .134 against RHPs this season.
STL 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Paul Goldschmidt
GPP Note: Team ISO of .150 against RHPs this season.
Texas Rangers @ Houston Astros (-216)
Pitchers:
Rangers – Jordan Lyles
Astros – Zack Greinke
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 8.5. Greinke struggled in his last start but he’s been pretty decent this season. He gets a very plus match-up as he put up 19 DK points in his first start against TEX. Lyles gave up 4 runs in his start against HOU and that should continue as I really like the Astros bats to bust out a little bit tonight.
TEX 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Nick Solak, Isiah Kiner-Falefa
GPP Note: Team ISO of .149 against RHPs this season.
HOU 5-star plays: Michael Brantley
4-star plays: Alex Bregman, Jose Altuve
GPP Note: Team ISO of .170 against RHPs this season.

Los Angeles Angels @ Oakland Athletics (-130)
Pitchers:
Angels – Griffin Canning
Athletics – Cole Irvin
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 9. A day game in Oakland can lead to a few more runs than usual. Seeing the total at 9 makes me feel good about targeting bats here, especially from the OAK side. Canning has had some solid success against the OAK roster but he’s been really bad this season.
LAA 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Anthony Rendon, Justin Upton
GPP Note: Team ISO of .179 against LHPs this season.
OAK 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Matt Olson, Matt Chapman
GPP Note: Team ISO of .172 against RHPs this season.
New York Yankees (-160) @ Toronto Blue Jays
Pitchers:
Yankees – Gerrit Cole
Blue Jays – Ross Stripling
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 8.5. I am going to be VERY interested in watching this game to see how Cole performs with this substance crackdown going on. As a baseball guy, I really want to see him do just fine so that we can stop talking about substances at this point but I have a fear that we see him struggle somewhat, especially against this powerful TOR lineup. He does have 16 Ks in 11.1 innings against TOR this season. Stripling has been very inconsistent and while the Yankees have struggled, his reverse splits issues could come into play with all the RH power that the Yankees have.
NYY 5-star plays: DJ LeMahieu
4-star plays: Giancarlo Stanton, Gleyber Torres
GPP Note: Team ISO of .150 against RHPs this season.
TOR 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Teoscar Hernandez, Vlad Guerrero Jr.
GPP Note: Team ISO of .193 against RHPs this season.

Detroit Tigers @ Kansas City Royals (-145)
Pitchers:
Tigers – Tarik Skubal
Royals – Brady Singer
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 9. The SP match-up from Tuesday night let me down a bit but we could see a bounce back by the pitchers. This is one of those games that I could see going either way and think that both pitchers are viable while both offenses could have some guys bust out. I am mostly interested in mini-stacks from each side at this point.
DET 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Jonathan Schoop, Willi Castro
GPP Note: Team ISO of .159 against RHPs this season.
KC 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Salvador Perez, Whit Merrifield
GPP Note: Team ISO of .150 against LHPs this season.
Cincinnati Reds @ Milwaukee Brewers (-145)
Pitchers:
Reds – Tyler Mahle
Brewers – Freddy Peralta
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 8. I thought last night’s game would be pretty high scoring but Castillo and Anderson really shut the opposition down. This one should be lower scoring with both SPs being viable and Peralta being very interesting. Peralta has been so good this season and he’s been strong against CIN, despite them having tremendous power vs RHPs. Mahle has been spectacular on the road so far this season and MIL’s offense isn’t a juggernaut.
CIN 5-star plays: Nick Castellanos
4-star plays: Joey Votto
GPP Note: Team ISO of .182 against RHPs this season.
MIL 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Omar Narvaez, Christian Yelich
GPP Note: Team ISO of .152 against RHPs this season.
Pittsburgh Pirates @ Washington Nationals
Pitchers:
Pirates – Chase de Jong
Nationals – Undecided
Rundown:
Waiting on the Vegas information.
PIT 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Ke’Bryan Hayes
GPP Note: Team ISO of .167 over the last week.
WSH 5-star plays: Kyle Schwarber
4-star plays: Trea Turner, Juan Soto
GPP Note: Team ISO of .135 against RHPs this season.
Boston Red Sox @ Atlanta Braves (-140)
Pitchers:
Red Sox – Garrett Richards
Braves – Ian Anderson
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 9. I am a huge fan of Ian Anderson and his raw stuff but this is a very tough match-up. I think we see another higher-scoring game in Atlanta. Richards is a pitcher that I will always pick on and just accept if he manages to shut down an offense enough. The ATL bats are going to be my main focus in this one.
BOS 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Alex Verdugo, Rafael Devers
GPP Note: Team ISO of .188 against RHPs this season.
ATL 5-star plays: Ozzie Albies
4-star plays: Ronald Acuna Jr., Freddie Freeman
GPP Note: Team ISO of .189 against RHPs this season.
Arizona Diamondbacks @ San Francisco Giants (-160)
Pitchers:
D’Backs – Merrill Kelly
Giants – Anthony DeSclafani
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 8. DeSclafani is going to end up one of my favorites SPs as he’s pretty cheap on DK and I just don’t think this ARI lineup is very good overall. I say this after they just put up a bunch of runs last night. The Giants offense has taken some hits with injuries and they are starting to struggle some overall.
ARI 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Ketel Marte, David Peralta
GPP Note: Team ISO of .136 against RHPs this season.
SF 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Buster Posey, Steven Duggar
GPP Note: Team ISO of .182 against RHPs this season.

Baltimore Orioles @ Cleveland Indians (-153)
Pitchers:
Orioles – Keegan Akin
Indians – Aaron Civale
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 8. Civale is going to end up being a pretty popular play on the slate. As long as he handles Mullins enough, he should be a pretty strong play. The Indians are in a decent spot but they lack overall lineup depth and the LHP takes a couple of decent GPP plays out of play for me (Bradley, Naylor).
BAL 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Cedric Mullins, Ryan Mountcastle
GPP Note: Team ISO of .148 against RHPs this season.
CLE 5-star plays: Cesar Hernandez
4-star plays: Jose Ramirez
GPP Note: Team ISO of .158 against LHPs this season.
Philadelphia Phillies @ Los Angeles Dodgers (-177)
Pitchers:
Phillies – Zack Wheeler
Dodgers – Clayton Kershaw
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 9. After a couple of rough outings, Kershaw bounced back in his last start. Being a huge favorite at home, I think he’s a very solid play overall and an excellent GPP option. Wheeler has been really good for the Phillies this season and should be a strong GPP play, despite being weaker on the road so far this season.
PHI 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Rhys Hoskins, JT Realmuto
GPP Note: Team ISO of .157 against LHPs this season.
LAD 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Justin Turner, Gavin Lux
GPP Note: Team ISO of .171 against RHPs this season.
Tampa Bay Rays @ Chicago White Sox
Pitchers:
Rays – Ryan Yarbrough
White Sox – Lucas Giolito
Rundown:
Waiting on the Vegas information.
TB 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Austin Meadows
GPP Note: Team ISO of .171 against RHPs this season.
CWS 5-star plays: Tim Anderson
4-star plays: Jose Abreu, Andrew Vaughn
GPP Note: Team ISO of .189 against LHPs this season.
San Diego Padres (-172) @ Colorado Rockies
Pitchers:
Padres – Blake Snell
Rockies – Kyle Freeland
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 11.5. I am very confused on what to do with this game as Snell can be dominant but he also can just lose the strike zone and allow a bunch of baserunners. San Diego struggles against LHPs this season but they have some decent numbers against Freeland, while Freeland has struggled quite a bit. Today’s game has a total a full run higher than last night’s game between Darvish and Gonzalez.
SD 5-star plays: Fernando Tatis Jr
4-star plays: Wil Myers, Tommy Pham
GPP Note: Team ISO of .113 against LHPs this season.
COL 5-star plays: Josh Fuentes
4-star plays: CJ Cron
GPP Note: Team ISO of .138 against RHPs this season.
Minnesota Twins (-111) @ Seattle Mariners
Pitchers:
Twins – Bailey Ober
Mariners – Justus Sheffield
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 8.5. At this point, I think the Twins are just going to continue to struggle. They get an LHP but they have dealt with so many injuries that I worry about chasing a high Team ISO. With that said, they are still going to make my top 3 stacks for the main slate. Ober was very solid in his last start, which came last night with Shoemaker being demoted to the bullpen. Seattle bats are probably a sneaky spot to target tonight.
MIN 5-star plays: Nelson Cruz
4-star plays: Josh Donaldson
GPP Note: Team ISO of .199 against LHPs this season.
SEA 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Jake Fraley, Kyle Seager
GPP Note: Team ISO of .159 against RHPs this season.
Stacks of the Day: Main Slate
- Atlanta Braves
- Houston Astros
- Minnesota Twins
MLB Dinger of the Day – Freddie Freeman, Atlanta Braves
