Happy MLB Season and welcome to another year of the DFS Army MLB Full Count! You have to start your research somewhere, and oftentimes going game by game and breaking down every matchup and its key players is the first step in our process. My name is Eric, @Razzle11Grinds on Twitter, make sure to give me a follow as I’ll occasionally make updates to the advice in the article out on Twitter as well as inside our coaching forums.  With that said, let’s get it started!

My Take on a Consistent MLB DFS Process – Looking at Pitchers

I always start an MLB slate by looking at pitching, not only do you get a grasp on who the pitchers are that you want to target, but gives you a holistic look at the slate as well. Breaking down pitching also gives you an idea of what offenses are in good spots against bad/vulnerable pitchers. I start my research by going straight to the  MLB Carnage Report this is where we can analyze all the pitchers on the slate in a compact, yet detailed manner. Below are the three pitchers that jumped out to me at first glance, good or bad.

  • Mike Minor
  • Hyun-Jin Ryu
  • Sammy Long

Chicago Cubs @ New York Mets (-145)

Pitchers:

Cubs – Alec Mills

Mets – Taijuan Walker

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 8.5. The Cubs were shut down by a struggling Peterson last night so that really makes me want to be high on Walker tonight. On the other side, Mills hasn’t been starting regularly so it’s tough to figure out what to expect from him. He may have a pitch count limit or he could just have a set innings limit, we won’t really know. He does draw a decent match-up so if we do find out how long he’s expected to go, he could make an interesting option if it’s deep enough.

CHC 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Joc Pederson, Anthony Rizzo

GPP Note: Team ISO of .174 against RHPS this season.

NYM 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Francisco Lindor

GPP Note: Team ISO of .145 against RHPs this season.

Miami Marlins @ St Louis Cardinals (-121)

Pitchers:

Marlins – Trevor Rogers

Cardinals – Kwang-Hyun Kim

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 7.5. Rogers is always in my pitcher pool as I have been extremely impressed with his ability over the last year or so. He draws a tough match-up as the Cardinals have hit LHPs extremely well so far. Kim is a guy who gets outs and can be very effective and since he’s the favorite here, we need to consider him.

MIA 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Jazz Chisholm, Starling Marte

GPP Note: Team ISO of .147 over the last week.

STL 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Nolan Arenado, Yadier Molina

GPP Note: Team ISO of .195 against LHPs this season.

Texas Rangers @ Houston Astros (-172)

Pitchers:

Rangers – Kyle Gibson

Astros – Lance McCullers Jr

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 8.5. McCullers is making his return from the IL and isn’t expected to pitch very deep. The rumor is that the Astros will piggyback him with Jake Odorizzi. That makes things interesting because Odorizzi has been pretty bad this season and it would bring some TEX bats into play as sneaky options. Gibson has been really strong for TEX so I am not running to build HOU stacks at this point.

TEX 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Nick Solak

GPP Note: Team ISO of .149 against RHPs this season.

HOU 5-star plays: Michael Brantley

4-star plays: Alex Bregman, Kyle Tucker

GPP Note: Team ISO of .170 against RHPs this season.

Los Angeles Angels @ Oakland Athletics (-121)

Pitchers:

Angels – Andrew Heaney

Athletics – Frankie Montas

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 8.5. Heaney and Montas are two of the most frustrating pitchers in baseball from a fantasy perspective. Both of these guys flash tremendous upside thanks to their K abilities but they both tend to give up some runs in spots that don’t make sense. Oakland has hit LHPs pretty well overall but those numbers have come down a bit without Laureano.

LAA 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Anthony Rendon, Shohei Ohtani

GPP Note: Team ISO of .173 against RHPs this season.

OAK 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Matt Olson, Elvis Andrus

GPP Note: Team ISO of .192 against LHPs this season.

New York Yankees @ Toronto Blue Jays (-115)

Pitchers:

Yankees – Jordan Montgomery

Blue Jays – Hyun-Jin Ryu

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 8.5. Ryu gets to take on a struggling NYY lineup while Montgomery takes on a pretty hot TOR lineup (despite struggling yesterday). I like Ryu for GPPs as I think I am going to pick on the Yankees until they wake up and start hitting HRs. The Blue Jays are always in my stacks because of the power they have throughout the lineup.

NYY 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Gary Sanchez, Gio Urshela

GPP Note: Team ISO of .158 against LHPs this season.

TOR 5-star plays: Vlad Guerrero Jr.

4-star plays: Bo Bichette, Randal Grichuk

GPP Note: Team ISO of .174 against LHPs this season.

MLB DFS Research Projections

Detroit Tigers @ Kansas City Royals (-140)

Pitchers:

Tigers – Casey Mize

Royals – Mike Minor

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 9. Mize has been pretty solid while Mike Minor lines up to be in a great spot against this Detroit lineup. I was shocked to see a total sitting at 9 with these offenses as we know Detroit is weak overall and KC has struggled a bit of late. Kansas City also just lost Benintendi to the IL. I have more interest in both SPs than I do in stacking these teams.

DET 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Miguel Cabrera, Robbie Grossman

GPP Note: Team ISO of .123 against LHPs this season.

KC 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Salvador Perez, Carlos Santana

GPP Note: Team ISO of .145 against RHPs this season.

Cincinnati Reds @ Milwaukee Brewers (-111)

Pitchers:

Reds – Luis Castillo

Brewers – Brett Anderson

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 8.5. Castillo has been doing just enough to make it difficult on opposing teams, at least from a stacking perspective. Anderson is a guy that I think should get hit hard every time he takes the mound. I was a little shocked to see that CIN has hit LHPs, as well as they, have this season, despite relying on a number of LH outfielders.

CIN 5-star plays: Nick Castellanos

4-star plays: Jesse Winker, Tyler Stephenson

GPP Note: Team ISO of .180 against LHPs this season.

MIL 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Avisail Garcia, Christian Yelich

GPP Note: Team ISO of .152 against RHPs this season.

Pittsburgh Pirates @ Washington Nationals (-157)

Pitchers:

Pirates – Tyler Anderson

Nationals – Patrick Corbin

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 8. We get two LHPs who are capable of picking up strikeouts but also are capable of giving up a handful of runs. I don’t think I want to use either SP very much but I also don’t see myself looking to stack either side. I will be interested in using one-offs or maybe mini-stacks from each side.

PIT 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Ke’Bryan Hayes

GPP Note: Team ISO of .135 against LHPs this season.

WSH 5-star plays: Ryan Zimmerman

4-star plays: Trea Turner

GPP Note: Team ISO of .153 against LHPs this season.

Boston Red Sox (-115) @ Atlanta Braves

Pitchers:

Red Sox – Eduardo Rodriguez

Braves – Tucker Davidson

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 9. Rodriguez has struggled quite a bit this season and this isn’t the match-up for him to struggle in. I know the Braves are missing Ozuna and d’Arnaud but the top half can really do damage against an LHP. Davidson has been really solid for ATL and he takes on a BOS squad that is far better against RHPs than LHPs this season.

BOS 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Xander Bogaerts, Bobby Dalbec

GPP Note: Team ISO of .151 against LHPs this season.

ATL 5-star plays: Ozzie Albies

4-star plays: Ronald Acuna Jr., Dansby Swanson

GPP Note: Team ISO of .200 against LHPs this season.

Arizona Diamondbacks @ San Francisco Giants

Pitchers:

D’Backs – Undecided

Giants – Sammy Long (long reliever)

Rundown:

Waiting on the Vegas information.

ARI 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Ketel Marte

GPP Note: Team ISO of .105 over the last 7 days.

SF 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Buster Posey

GPP Note: Team ISO of .116 over the last 7 days.

MLB DFS Winning Lineups $50,000

Baltimore Orioles @ Cleveland Indians (-160)

Pitchers:

Orioles – Matt Harvey

Indians – Cal Quantrill

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 9. We should see some offense in this game. Harvey has struggled and the CLE lineup has some sneaky pop, even without Franmil Reyes. Quantrill hasn’t been able to consistently get outs and the Orioles can score some runs with the top of their lineup. I have zero interest in the SPs and I will have stacks from each side.

BAL 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Cedric Mullins, Ryan Mountcastle

GPP Note: Team ISO of .148 against RHPs this season.

CLE 5-star plays: Cesar Hernandez

4-star plays: Jose Ramirez, Bobby Bradley

GPP Note: Team ISO of .162 against RHPs this season.

Philadelphia Phillies @ Los Angeles Dodgers (-177)

Pitchers:

Phillies – Zach Eflin

Dodgers – Julio Urias

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 9. Seeing a total of 9 really surprises me with Urias pitching at home. The Phillies have a dangerous lineup but that lineup has struggled for much of the season. Eflin can be decent but the match-up isn’t great for him. He does get the Dodgers at a time where Bellinger is dealing with an injury again.

PHI 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Jean Segura

GPP Note: Team ISO of .157 against LHPs this season.

LAD 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Justin Turner, Cody Bellinger

GPP Note: Team ISO of .171 against RHPs this season.

Tampa Bay Rays @ Chicago White Sox (-111)

Pitchers:

Rays – Shane McClanahan

White Sox – Dallas Keuchel

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 8.5. We get a match-up between two very different LHPs. Keuchel is going to rely on movement and location while McClanahan is going to rely on throwing the ball extremely hard while trying to overpower bats. The White Sox have been really good against LHPs this season while the Rays have had some K issues against LHPs. The probably with having K issues here is that Keuchel doesn’t strike many out.

TB 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Mike Zunino, Randy Arozarena

GPP Note: Team ISO of .150 against LHPs this season.

CWS 5-star plays: Tim Anderson

4-star plays: Jose Abreu, Andrew Vaughn

GPP Note: Team ISO of .189 against LHPs this season.

San Diego Padres (-216) @ Colorado Rockies

Pitchers:

Padres – Yu Darvish

Rockies – Chi Chi Gonzalez

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 10.5. Maybe we see some runs in Coors tonight? Last night was a letdown for those stacking the game (I had more Gomber than I did stacks of the game). Darvish is obviously one of the top SPs on the slate so he should be considered. I think this is a spot for the SD bats to wake up a bit against Gonzalez.

SD 5-star plays: Fernando Tatis Jr

4-star plays: Jake Cronenworth

GPP Note: Team ISO of .146 against RHPs this season.

COL 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Charlie Blackmon

GPP Note: Team ISO of .138 against RHPs this season.

Minnesota Twins (-111) @ Seattle Mariners

Pitchers:

Twins – JA Happ

Mariners – Chris Flexen

Rundown:

This game has opened with a total of 8.5. For how much the Twins have struggled this season, they certainly have impressive ISO’s as a team. They are capable of winning a slate almost any time they are on the field. Seattle isn’t a team that is going to win us the slate very much but they do have a couple of one-off bats that can do damage against Happ.

MIN 5-star plays: Nelson Cruz

4-star plays: Luis Arraez, Miguel Sano

GPP Note: Team ISO of .185 against RHPs this season.

SEA 5-star plays: NONE

4-star plays: Tom Murphy, Kyle Seager

GPP Note: Team ISO of .158 against LHPs this season.

Stacks of the Day: Main Slate

  1. San Diego Padres
  2. Cincinnati Reds
  3. Atlanta Braves

MLB Dinger of the Day – Bo Bichette, Toronto Blue Jays
