Happy MLB Season and welcome to another year of the DFS Army MLB Full Count! You have to start your research somewhere, and oftentimes going game by game and breaking down every matchup and its key players is the first step in our process. My name is Eric, @Razzle11Grinds on Twitter, make sure to give me a follow as I’ll occasionally make updates to the advice in the article out on Twitter as well as inside our coaching forums. With that said, let’s get it started!
My Take on a Consistent MLB DFS Process – Looking at Pitchers
I always start an MLB slate by looking at pitching, not only do you get a grasp on who the pitchers are that you want to target, but gives you a holistic look at the slate as well. Breaking down pitching also gives you an idea of what offenses are in good spots against bad/vulnerable pitchers. I start my research by going straight to the MLB Carnage Report this is where we can analyze all the pitchers on the slate in a compact, yet detailed manner. Below are the three pitchers that jumped out to me at first glance, good or bad.
- Shane Bieber
- Aaron Nola
- Framber Valdez

San Diego Padres (-130) @ New York Mets
Pitchers:
Padres – Chris Paddack
Mets – Joey Lucchesi
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 7.5. My personal thought is that this total should be higher. I don’t think very highly of either SP at this point, even though Paddack has started to flash decent ability to get outs consistently. I know the Padres have struggled against LHPs so far this season but they have some bats that can do a TON of damage.
SD 5-star plays: Manny Machado
4-star plays: Fernando Tatis Jr., Wil Myers
GPP Note: Team ISO of .115 against LHPs this season.
NYM 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Jonathan Villar, Billy McKinney
GPP Note: Team ISO of .144 against RHPs this season.
St Louis Cardinals @ Chicago Cubs (-140)
Pitchers:
Cardinals – Carlos Martinez
Cubs – Zach Davies
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 9.5. Seeing the Sunday Night game with a huge total makes me really excited for the Showdown slate. The weather should be excellent for hitting with that total and we possibly could see the wind blowing out. I have almost zero interest in the SPs, so we should be all over the offenses.
STL 5-star plays: Paul Goldschmidt, Matt Carpenter
4-star plays: Nolan Arenado, Tyler O’Neill
GPP Note: Team ISO of .154 against RHPs this season.
CHC 5-star plays: Anthony Rizzo, Ian Happ
4-star plays: Joc Pederson, Willson Contreras
GPP Note: Team ISO of .169 against RHPs this season.
Houston Astros (-130) @ Minnesota Twins
Pitchers:
Astros – Framber Valdez
Twins – Michael Pineda
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 9.5. Valdez has been so solid for the Astros so I am going to be overweight on him (at first glance). I know the Twins have impressive ISO’s against LHPs but they are missing a big piece of that in Garver. I also think this is a very tough spot for Pineda as he has been a somewhat reverse splits SP and HOU has a bunch of guys that can smash RHPs.
HOU 5-star plays: Carlos Correa
4-star plays: Jose Altuve, Yuli Gurriel
GPP Note: Team ISO of .161 against RHPs this season.
MIN 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Nelson Cruz, Josh Donaldson
GPP Note: Team ISO of .197 against LHPs this season.
Watching the weather is half the battle when it comes to MLB DFS. The DFS Army Weather Station has you covered, from games that have delay and postponement potential to games that could have significant winds that will play a role in selecting a team to stack or a pitcher to use.

Kansas City Royals @ Oakland Athletics (-195)
Pitchers:
Royals – Kris Bubic
Athletics – Chris Bassitt
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 8. Bassitt will always make my SP pool but I don’t love his spot against KC, during the day in Oakland. The Athletics bats should be somewhat popular against Bubic as they have hit LHPs fairly well this season. My initial thought is that I will look at mini-stacks from these teams.
KC 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Carlos Santana, Whit Merrifield
GPP Note: Team ISO of .145 against RHPs this season.
OAK 5-star plays: Matt Olson
4-star plays: Mark Canha
GPP Note: Team ISO of .183 against LHPs this season.
Toronto Blue Jays (-115) @ Boston Red Sox
Pitchers:
Blue Jays – Robbie Ray
Red Sox – Martin Perez
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 10. Once again the game in Fenway should be fairly popular. Both of these offenses are capable of going off and hitting many HRs but the issue for me is that they are both much better against RHPs. I will certainly be stacking both sides of this game but will be heavier on Toronto.
TOR 5-star plays: Teoscar Hernandez
4-star plays: Bo Bichette, Randal Grichuk
GPP Note: Team ISO of .159 against LHPs this season.
BOS 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Xander Bogaerts, Danny Santana
GPP Note: Team ISO of .154 against LHPs this season.

Chicago White Sox @ Detroit Tigers
Pitchers:
White Sox – Carlos Rodon
Tigers – Kyle Funkouser
Rundown:
Waiting on the Vegas information.
CWS 5-star plays: Tim Anderson
4-star plays: Yoan Moncada, Brian Goodwin
GPP Note: Team ISO of .142 against RHPs this season.
DET 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Miguel Cabrera, Jonathan Schoop
GPP Note: Team ISO of .126 against LHPs this season.
Colorado Rockies @ Cincinnati Reds (-157)
Pitchers:
Rockies – Antonio Senzatela
Reds – Tony Santillan
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 9.5. Going to be tough to talk me off of the Reds on Sunday. They are at home and facing an RHP with a pretty nice team total. I have to dig into Santillan more but I might have to consider stacking the Rockies in a couple of places. Blackmon is seeing the ball extremely well while Tapia is a tough out at this point.
COL 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Charlie Blackmon, Raimel Tapia
GPP Note: Team ISO of .139 against RHPs this season.
CIN 5-star plays: Nick Castellanos, Joey Votto
4-star plays: Eugenio Suarez, Jesse Winker
GPP Note: Team ISO of .184 against RHPs this season.
Pittsburgh Pirates @ Milwaukee Brewers (-203)
Pitchers:
Pirates – Will Crowe
Brewers – Adrian Houser
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 9. The Pirates have made it difficult on Woodruff and Burnes so far this weekend. Both of those SPs are better than Houser and the Pirates have a couple of strong BvP histories against Houser. The Brewers are a hot team right now so we probably see them put up some runs in this game, despite a lineup that doesn’t look overly dangerous.
PIT 5-star plays: Colin Moran
4-star plays: Ke’Bryan Hayes, Adam Frazier
GPP Note: Team ISO of .118 against RHPs this season.
MIL 5-star plays: Christian Yelich
4-star plays: Omar Narvaez, Daniel Vogelbach
GPP Note: Team ISO of .153 against RHPs this season.
Atlanta Braves @ Miami Marlins (-130)
Pitchers:
Braves – Drew Smyly
Marlins – Pablo Lopez
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 7.5. I am a huge Lopez fan so I will be using him in GPP builds. He gets a team that can strike out a bunch but they are also a team that can put up many extra-base hits against him. Smyly is a guy that is a better real-life pitcher than he is a DFS pitcher.
ATL 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Ronald Acuna Jr., Freddie Freeman
GPP Note: Team ISO of .195 against RHPs this season.
MIA 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Adam Duvall, Starling Marte
GPP Note: Team ISO of .147 against LHPs this season.
San Francisco Giants @ Washington Nationals
Pitchers:
Giants – Johnny Cueto
Nationals – Joe Ross
Rundown:
Waiting on the Vegas information.
SF 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Brandon Crawford, Brandon Belt
GPP Note: Team ISO of .188 against RHPs this season.
WSH 5-star plays: Juan Soto
4-star plays: Kyle Schwarber, Josh Bell
GPP Note: Team ISO of .132 against RHPs this season.

Seattle Mariners @ Cleveland Indians (-240)
Pitchers:
Mariners – Logan Gilbert
Indians – Shane Bieber
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 7.5. Bieber takes on a super weak lineup who surprised him a bit in Seattle earlier. I expect him to be dominant here, despite not necessarily being the same dominant guy as last season. I don’t think the Indians’ offense is a stackable one at this point so I guess that means we need to consider Gilbert as an SP2 on DK.
SEA 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Mitch Haniger
GPP Note: Team ISO of .157 against RHPs this season.
CLE 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Jose Ramirez, Amed Rosario
GPP Note: Team ISO of .164 against RHPs this season.
Texas Rangers @ Los Angeles Dodgers (-250)
Pitchers:
Rangers – Dane Dunning
Dodgers – Walker Buehler
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 8. The Rangers just put 6 runs (4 earned) up against Bauer on Saturday night. I don’t think that Buehler is going to have the same issues so he should be one of our favorite SP options. Dunning has been somewhat impressive in his first season with the Rangers. He just draws a tough match-up and the Dodgers should be pretty popular based solely on the name.
TEX 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Joey Gallo
GPP Note: Team ISO of .146 against RHPs this season.
LAD 5-star plays: Justin Turner
4-star plays: Albert Pujols, Cody Bellinger
GPP Note: Team ISO of .170 against RHPs this season.
Baltimore Orioles @ Tampa Bay Rays
Pitchers:
Orioles – Bruce Zimmermann
Rays – Michael Wacha
Rundown:
Waiting on the Vegas information.
BAL 5-star plays: Trey Mancini
4-star plays: Ryan Mountcastle, Cedric Mullins
GPP Note: Team ISO of .151 against RHPs this season.
TB 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Mike Zunino, Randy Arozarena
GPP Note: Team ISO of .150 against LHPs this season.
Los Angeles Angels (-130) @ Arizona Diamondbacks
Pitchers:
Angels – Patrick Sandoval
D’Backs – Jon Duplantier
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 9.5. Sandoval is coming off of an impressive start but he takes on an ARI squad that has actually hit LHPs really well. Duplantier has NOT looked good at the MLB level in his career so the Angels need to be on our radars. I just wish Trout would return because I was loving the way he was destroying things this season.
LAA 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Jared Walsh, Shohei Ohtani
GPP Note: Team ISO of .170 against RHPs this season.
ARI 5-star plays: Ketel Marte
4-star plays: Carson Kelly, Eduardo Escobar
GPP Note: Team ISO of .190 against LHPs this season.
New York Yankees @ Philadelphia Phillies (-130)
Pitchers:
Yankees – Domingo German
Phillies – Aaron Nola
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 8.5. The Phillies are walking off wins left and right. German has been decent for the Yankees but the big key in this game is that Nola gets to pitch at home. I love using him against anybody when he gets to throw at home. The Yankees bats might be waking up a bit but they do lose the DH here and Nola is just so strong. I can understand wanting to stack the Yankees because of their names but I think I am going to be heavy on Nola for GPPs.
NYY 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton
GPP Note: Team ISO of .146 against RHPs this season.
PHI 5-star plays: Odubel Herrera
4-star plays: Bryce Harper, Jean Segura
GPP Note: Team ISO of .142 against RHPs this season.
Stacks of the Day: Main Slate
