Happy MLB Season and welcome to another year of the DFS Army MLB Full Count! You have to start your research somewhere, and oftentimes going game by game and breaking down every matchup and its key players is the first step in our process. My name is Eric, @Razzle11Grinds on Twitter, make sure to give me a follow as I’ll occasionally make updates to the advice in the article out on Twitter as well as inside our coaching forums. With that said, let’s get it started!
My Take on a Consistent MLB DFS Process – Looking at Pitchers
I always start an MLB slate by looking at pitching, not only do you get a grasp on who the pitchers are that you want to target, but gives you a holistic look at the slate as well. Breaking down pitching also gives you an idea of what offenses are in good spots against bad/vulnerable pitchers. I start my research by going straight to the MLB Carnage Report this is where we can analyze all the pitchers on the slate in a compact, yet detailed manner. Below are the three pitchers that jumped out to me at first glance, good or bad.
- Trevor Bauer
- German Marquez
- Tyler Glasnow

Baltimore Orioles @ Minnesota Twins (-195)
Pitchers:
Orioles – Jorge Lopez
Twins – Michael Pineda
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 9. Pineda will be returning from an IL stint dealing with surgery on his inner thigh. Sounds to me like it was just something small so he should face zero limitations here. I always stack against Lopez so the Twins are going to find themselves in my top couple for the early slate of games.

Chicago Cubs (-135) @ Pittsburgh Pirates
Pitchers:
Cubs – Trevor Williams
Pirates – Wil Crowe
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 8.5. Williams threw a lot of innings at this park, as a member of the Pirates. I could see him doing some positive things in his return but Frazier and Reynolds have hit him well so far. Crowe is a guy that has flashed some solid ability in very small spurts. I think that he is in trouble here as the Cubs feel like one of the better offenses on the slate.
CHC 5-star plays: Ian Happ, Javy Baez
4-star plays: Anthony Rizzo, Joc Pederson
GPP Note: Team ISO of .159 over the last week.
PIT 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Adam Frazier, Bryan Reynolds
GPP Note: Team ISO of .108 against RHPs this season.

Atlanta Braves @ Boston Red Sox (-111)
Pitchers:
Braves – Drew Smyly
Red Sox – Nick Pivetta
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 10. We get a HUGE total here and it’s going to end up the highest on the slate. Game stacks are going to be abundant in this one. I actually prefer BOS vs RHPs overall but they do have a GREAT mini-stack with Martinez and Bogaerts. Pivetta has been really impressive with the Red Sox but this match-up really sucks for him.
ATL 5-star plays: Freddie Freeman
4-star plays: Austin Riley, Ender Inciarte
GPP Note: Team ISO of .201 against RHPs this season.
BOS 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Xander Bogaerts, JD Martinez
GPP Note: Team ISO of .160 against LHPS this season.
Toronto Blue Jays @ New York Yankees (-160)
Pitchers:
Blue Jays – Alek Manoah
Yankees – Domingo German
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 9. The Yankees keep letting us down so I am not sure what to do with them against a very talented but raw pitcher, making his MLB debut. German has thrown the ball exceptionally well since being re-called but this is going to be his toughest test as Vladdy Jr is just destroying baseballs right now.
TOR 5-star plays: Vlad Guerrero Jr.
4-star plays: Teoscar Hernandez, Marcus Semien
GPP Note: Team ISO of .176 against RHPs this season.
NYY 5-star plays: Gleyber Torres
4-star plays: DJ LeMahieu, Aaron Judge
GPP Note: Team ISO of .149 against RHPs this season.
Cincinnati Reds @ Washington Nationals (-125)
Pitchers:
Reds – Jeff Hoffman
Nationals – Joe Ross
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 9.5. My first thought is that I should look to game stack this game more than the ATL-BOS match-up for GPP purposes. There are some very strong BvPs plus the game may end up with a total of 10 by the time the first pitch is thrown. I am going to continue to ride the Nationals against RHPs until they absolutely blow up because they have a lineup that should torment them.
CIN 5-star plays: Nick Castellanos
4-star plays: Jesse Winker, Tucker Barnhart
GPP Note: Team ISO of .187 against RHPs this season.
WSH 5-star plays: Juan Soto, Josh Bell
4-star plays: Trea Turner, Kyle Schwarber
GPP Note: Team ISO of .149 against RHPs this season.
St Louis Cardinals @ Chicago White Sox (-177)
Pitchers:
Cardinals – John Gant
White Sox – Carlos Rodon
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 8.5. Rodon is an arm with a huge ceiling but he could struggle with some of the patient RHBs of the Cardinals. Gant is a guy that just doesn’t seem to strike out enough guys while walking too many. I will be stacking STL for at least 1 GPP build because of the top of the order’s ability to smack LHPs.
STL 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Nolan Arenado, Yadier Molina
GPP Note: Team ISO of .184 against LHPs this season.
CWS 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Jose Abreu, Tim Anderson
GPP Note: Team ISO of .139 against RHPs this season.
Colorado Rockies @ New York Mets (-125)
Pitchers:
Rockies – German Marquez
Mets – Marcus Stroman
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 6.5. We jumped all over the SPs in Tuesday night’s game and we are going to do it again on Wednesday. Seeing a total this low without elite SPs on the mound really tells you what kind of offenses we are dealing with here. My first thought is that I prefer Marquez to Stroman but it’s very close.
COL 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Charlie Blackmon, Trevor Story
GPP Note: Team ISO of .148 against RHPs this season.
NYM 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Jonathan Villar, Francisco Lindor
GPP Note: Team ISO of .112 against RHPs this season.
Cleveland Indians @ Detroit Tigers
Pitchers:
Indians – Undecided
Tigers – Jose Urena
Rundown:
Waiting on the Vegas information.
CLE 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Jose Ramirez, Cesar Hernandez
GPP Note: Team ISO of .172 against RHPs this season.
DET 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Robbie Grossman
GPP Note: Team ISO of .150 against RHPs this season.

San Francisco Giants (-130) @ Arizona Diamondbacks
Pitchers:
Giants – Johnny Cueto
D’Backs – Merrill Kelly
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 8.5. I am shocked to see Wednesday’s game with a lower total than Tuesday’s despite Gausman having been on the mound over Cueto. I hope the Giants go with a normal lineup as I think they are in a great spot against Kelly. Arizona’s lineup is pretty weak overall with all the injuries but guys like Marte and Escobar are always capable of huge games.
SF 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Brandon Crawford, Buster Posey
GPP Note: Team ISO of .177 against RHPs this season.
ARI 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Eduardo Escobar, Ketel Marte
GPP Note: Team ISO of .150 against RHPs this season.
Seattle Mariners @ Oakland Athletics
Pitchers:
Mariners – Undecided
Athletics – James Kaprielian
Rundown:
Waiting on the Vegas information.
SEA 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Mitch Haniger
GPP Note: Team ISO of .158 against RHPs this season.
OAK 5-star plays: Matt Olson
4-star plays: Mark Canha
GPP Note: Team ISO of .197 during day games this season.
Los Angeles Dodgers (-135) @ Houston Astros
Pitchers:
Dodgers – Trevor Bauer
Astros – Luis Garcia
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 8.5. I am really excited to see Bauer head to Houston to start. He was one of the most outspoken guys against the Astros and he was always getting into it with Gerrit Cole while he was in Houston. Garcia is a kid that has impressed me this season and he could be a GPP option but the Dodgers are playing excellent baseball right now, despite their injuries.
LAD 5-star plays: Max Muncy
4-star plays: Justin Turner, Gavin Lux
GPP Note: Team ISO of .175 against RHPs this season.
HOU 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Jose Altuve, Michael Brantley
GPP Note: Team ISO of .155 against RHPs this season.
Kansas City Royals @ Tampa Bay Rays (-203)
Pitchers:
Royals – Mike Minor
Rays – Tyler Glasnow
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total of 7. I am looking at Glasnow to bounce back a bit here as the Royals are scuffling a bit at the plate and the game has a pretty low total, while TB is a large favorite. The TB bats were shut down a bit on Tuesday night despite being in a great spot so I look for them to bounce back a little bit as well.
KC 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Whit Merrifield, Carlos Santana
GPP Note: Team ISO of .149 against RHPs this season.
TB 5-star plays: Randy Arozarena
4-star plays: Mike Zunino, Manuel Margot
GPP Note: Team ISO of .166 against LHPs this season.
Stacks of the Day: Main Slate
- Atlanta Braves
- Boston Red Sox
- Washington Nationals
MLB Dinger of the Day – Juan Soto, Washington Nationals
