My Take on a Consistent MLB DFS Process – Looking at Pitchers
I always start an MLB slate by looking at pitching, not only do you get a grasp on who the pitchers are that you want to target. But it also gives you an idea of what offenses are in good spots against bad/vulnerable pitchers. I start my research by going straight to the Nilly’s MLB Carnage Report, this is where we can analyze all the pitchers on the slate in a compact, yet detailed manner. Below are the three pitchers that popped out to me at first glance.
- Clayton Kershaw
- Ian Anderson
- Masahiro Tanaka

Full Count Breakdown for MLB DFS:
Miami Marlins @ Atlanta Braves (-200)
Starting Pitchers:
Marlins – Pablo Lopez
Braves – Ian Anderson
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total set at 9 runs. This game is being played at Minute Maid Park in Houston. Anderson made two starts against MIA this season and allowed just 1 earned run (5 runs total) in 8.2 IP. He picked up 10 Ks in those 8.2 IP. He can have some control issues at times as he has walked 16 batters in 38.1 IP. Lopez is in a tough spot here as he has struggled quite a bit on the road this season, as well as against Atlanta.
MIA 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Jon Berti, Garrett Cooper
GPP Note: Team ISO of .133 against ATL this season.
ATL 5-star plays: Ronald Acuna Jr
4-star plays: Marcel Ozuna, Travis d’Arnaud
GPP Note: Team ISO of .209 against MIA this season.

Houston Astros (-121) @ Oakland Athletics
Starting Pitchers:
Astros – Jose Urquidy
Athletics – Jesus Luzardo
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total set at 9. This game is being played at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. Jose Urquidy is an interesting option on this slate. He has been really solid since entering the rotation for the Astros but he lacks K upside and he has some walk issues. With the way the ball has been flying in LA, I do have some worries. He has allowed 3 HRs in 17.1 road IP this season. Luzardo has been atrocious on the road this season but he’s been strong against the Astros. His road ERA sits at an ugly 8.15 and he allowed 6 HRs in 17.2 IP. Against the Astros this year, Luzardo managed 12.2 IP with 12 strikeouts and 4 runs allowed (3 HRs).
HOU 5-star plays: George Springer
4-star plays: Yuli Gurriel, Alex Bregman
GPP Note: Team ISO of .121 against OAK this season.
OAK 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Khris Davis, Matt Olson
GPP Note: Team ISO of .188 against HOU this season.
Winning at MLB DFS is about correlation and constructing lineups that can actually win a big GPP. Take full advantage of positive variance with an optimizer giving you the ability to build around historically winning combinations of players.

San Diego Padres @ Los Angeles Dodgers
Starting Pitchers:
Padres – Zach Davies
Dodgers – Clayton Kershaw
Rundown:
Waiting on Vegas information. This game is being played at Globe Life Field in Arlington (Texas Rangers). Going to be waiting on verification as to whether Davies is the actual starter for the Padres.
SD 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Fernando Tatis Jr, Manny Machado
GPP Note: Team ISO of .235 during the postseason.
LAD 5-star plays: Cody Bellinger
4-star plays: Corey Seager, Justin Turner
GPP Note: Team ISO of .191 against San Diego this season.
New York Yankees (-119) @ Tampa Bay Rays
Starting Pitchers:
Yankees – Masahiro Tanaka
Tampa Bay Rays – Charlie Morton
Rundown:
This game has a total set at 9. This game is being played at PetCo Park in San Diego. Tanaka has faced the Rays three times this season and managed 2 really strong performances and 1 really bad one. In total, he covered 15 IP with 14 Ks and he allowed 8 runs with 3 HRs. Morton hasn’t thrown in a game in nearly 2 weeks so we might not see him go overly deep. He made 2 starts against the Yankees in the regular season but he went just 2 IP in each of them. He left the first start with an injury issue, missed nearly a month, and then made his return from the IL against the Yankees.
NYY 5-star plays: Giancarlo Stanton
4-star plays: Aaron Hicks, DJ LeMahieu
GPP Note: Have hit 13 HRs through 4 postseason games so far.
TB 5-star plays: Randy Arozarena
4-star plays: Austin Meadows, Kevin Keirmaier
GPP Note: Team ISO of .221 against the Yankees this season.
Mini Stacks of the Day:
- Ronald Acuna Jr-Marcel Ozuna-Travis d’Arnaud
- Aaron Hicks-Luke Voit-Giancarlo Stanton
- Corey Seager-Justin Turner-Cody Bellinger
Playoff Prediction of the Day:
We are going to see 5+ HRs in the first two games of the day but just 3 or less in the last two games. The ball seems to be flying during the day, especially in LA (HOU-OAK). I want to also go out on a limb and say at least one SP takes a no-hitter into the 5th as it just feels like a completely random day for that to happen.
As always I appreciate everyone who gave the article a read! Feel free to mix it up with me in our coaching forums as news breaks and lock approaches.
