This article focuses primarily on 3-Man snake draft strategy. Reason being is that you can easily apply this information to H2H as well as widen up to 4-Man contests, which is the average size of the daily GPPs. I’m going to break down what I saw in 20-30 drafts today and how we can exploit our opponents using our tools over on DFS Army.
Quick Trends (20 game sample)
- Trout dominated the first pick today at 70% pick rate for good reason:

- Rounding out the top picks today are Arenado, Scherzer, Story, Paxton, and Blackmon. It wasn’t as clear cut for people today on what direction to go, which made reaching for a pitcher a thing. Yes Scherzer is elite and Paxton is solid, but there are some decent choices beyond those two at pitching today making reaching for them in a 3 man a little suspect. I can see reaching for Scherzer as he’ll on average produce ~ 5 points more than the rest of the pitching on the slate. Paxton doesn’t get enough seperation to really warrant it however.
- 100% ers: Trout, Arenado, Story, Blackmon, Cargo, Freeman, Albies, Harper, Paxton, Scherzer, Belt, Freeman. Tight core today as 12 out of 15 draft positions were grabbed in every draft out of a sample of 20 drafts. That’s 80% of all players are the same. I have 5 (25%) of the exact same line up tonight already which is a first for me.
Draft Projections & Rankings
Sadly, I didn’t grab a picture today 🙁 Beat me up on Twitter if you have to
Here’s the default draft rankings by position in Draft for their top positions. While most of these would be solid plays, they are vastly different than our projections and grades we developed in house at DFS Army where take into account many different metrics that these do not. Combining our brand new Starting Lineups Page, Domination Station, Articles, and research station, you can quickly see where some players in absolute smash spots should be drafted higher than what’s on this list.

Strategy
- The sharper players are grabbing Scherzer early and often today. I’m apparently as dull as a marble because I went a different direction. If you want Scherzer, he averaged pick 2.9 so you’ll need to grab him in the first round or if you’re picking 3rd and he falls to you, grab him either 3 or 4.
- There is a long list of ignored players in high spots today in both IF and OF. As usual, I’m advocating a core of the top plays plus one odd ball in a superior spot. Just because a guy is in Coors tonight doesn’t mean he’s in a better spot that players who aren’t. It’s not the only hitting park.
- I’m taking a stand and going with pitcher as a last pick today. I think you can get enough value separation getting 2 better hitters vs. Scherzer. I think there are difference makers batting today. Plus as we saw with Maeda yesterday, just because a pitcher is in a great spot it doesn’t mean the opposing team can’t get a hit or 10 off of them.
