Searching For the Free Square
In the game of Bingo, every card gets an empty spot in the middle called the “Free Square”. Since it’s the middle square, the free square is essentially the ideal spot from which to build lines around. In DFS we define the Free Square as the player to build your line-ups around. Generally, this player represents the closest we can find to a sure thing for the slate. This column is all about trying to identify the free square for a particular slate. We are going to be searching most often for one SP, one OF, and one IF. The type of player we are looking for that allows us to load up the rest of our lineup with high salary studs. Occasionally it will be a high priced stud in a great spot, The goal of this column is to use quantitative data to identify the free square for the days Daily Fantasy Baseball slate. Each slate we will take a deep look at three or four players which represent outsized value on the day’s slate of games and choose the one which best represents the top value and floor play to earn the title of the slates Free Square of the night.

Recap
For our pitcher free square last night we had Jeff Samardzija who ended up with 37.45 DKFP which was good enough for right around 4.2x value! For our infielder free square, we had Miguel Cabrera who ended up with 6 DKFP which was good enough for 1.6x value. Our outfielder free square was Carlos Gonzalez who was scratched late.
Tonight
We have a solid 15-game slate ahead of us for Tuesday night. On the pitching side of things, we are led by Chris Sale, Jake Arrieta, and Rich Hill. On the Hitting side of things, we are led by the Colorado Rockies, Cincinnati Reds, and the Minnesota Twins. Let’s dive into this huge slate:

Free Squares
- Zack Godley SP ARI ($7,700)
- Zack Godley and the Arizona Diamondback will take on the Los Angeles Dodgers tonight at Chase Field tonight. The Diamondbacks are currently +111 favorites and the Dodgers have an implied run total sitting at right around 4.66 runs. Godley has been having a solid season so far and I like his price tonight. He has the following advanced stats on the season: .284 wOBA given up to lefties, .278 wOBA given up to righties, 26.4 K%, 8.5 BB%, .275 BABIP, 30.2 Hard%, 3.64 SIERA, and a 3.27 xFIP. He will take on the Los Angeles Dodgers tonight who have been averaging right around 5 runs per game this season. They have the following ranks against right handed pitching this season: 1st in BB%, 12th in K%, 6th in OPS, 11th in ISO, 6th in wOBA, 3rd in wRC+. The Dodgers are a solid hitting team but Godley has been steady for most of the season and I think he can keep them in check tonight. He makes a solid SP2 option with some upside tonight on DraftKings.
- Matt Carpenter 1B STL ($3,800)
- Matt Carpenter and the St. Louis Cardinals will take on the Milwaukee Brewers and pitcher Matt Garza at Miller Park tonight. The Cards have an implied run total sitting at right around 4.74 runs. Carpenter has had a solid year and I love his matchup against Matt Garza tonight. He has the following numbers against right handed pitchers this season: 16.3 BB%, 18.8 K%, .856 OPS, .215 ISO, .286 BABIP, .367 wOBA, 127 wRC+, and a 43.6 Hard%. He gets to face Matt Garza tonight who has the following numbers vs. left handed bats: 1.74 HR/9, 11.8 K%, 11.0 BB%, 6.17 xFIP, and a 36.9 Hard%. This is a pretty simple equation tonight as Garza has been atrocious against lefties this season and Carpenter has mashed righties. I think he is priced way too low tonight for his upside.
- Adam Duvall OF CIN ($3,900)
- Adam Duvall and the Cincinnati Reds will take on the New York Mets and pitcher Chris Flexen tonight at the Great American Ballpark. Duval and the Reds have an implied run total sitting at right around 5.49 runs. Duvall has had a solid year and he always brings a ton of power potential to the plate. He has the following numbers vs. right handed pitching on the season: 5.0 BB%, 27.2 K%, .781 OPS, .243 ISO, .325 wOBA, 97 wRC+, and a 33.5 Hard%. He gets to face Chris Flexen who has the following numbers against righties on the season: .422 wOBA, 2.30 HR/9, 17.8 K%, 12.3 BB%, 5.22 xFIP, 36.0 Hard%. I love the Reds tonight and expect them to put up a big number against Flexen. Duvall hits in the heart of the order and he has a ton of potential to go off tonight.
