Horses and Heroes: Undervalued NHL Defensemen Picks for DFS (DraftKings and FanDuel)

If you’re playing NHL DFS on DraftKings or FanDuel, you already know goalies and stacks are high priority. But the secret edge to climbing tournaments is finding those sneaky defensemen who fly under the radar—the Horses & Heroes. In this article, I’ll eveal my favorite undervalued NHL defensemen plays for this slate, explain why they matter for DFS strategy, and show you how to plug these picks into your lineups. Horse – A defenseman that is more chalky than others that is a catalyst for their team. These players usually have higher ceilings, and can be used as the glue to bring a stack together. They typically quarterback the top powerplay unit and log a ton of minutes.

Hero – A hero is a cheaper defenseman that will be a role player on their NHL team. They usually kill penalties and are the unsung heroes that block shots for their team. They typically garner low ownership, have high floors, and are the key pieces needed to take down tournaments.

Horses & Heroes: Top NHL Defensemen to Target for DFS Lineups

Mattias Samuelsson – This dude does nothing but play big minutes and fall into fantasy production. This game in Montreal is going to be a high event and fast game for fantasy production, which just puts an exclamation point on Samuelsson. He is a strong play in all formats.

Nikita Zadorov – Another Boston hero here, as this seems to be a regular occurrence for this team. Zadorov gets up for home games, and the Vegas Golden Knights like to shoot pucks and push pace. I am at least expecting a shot block bonus for the big Russian defenseman who kills penalties and plays big minutes.
Simon Edvinsson – This hero is the young Swedish giraffe for the Red Wings who find themselves in Minnesota. He plays huge minutes, kills penalties, and disrupts plays all over the ice. There are also a ton of Swedish players playing in this game, so he wants to make an impact, so maybe he can put his name in the hat for the next Olympics (or even be a replacement player for this one). Edvinsson has a high floor in this spot.

Lane Hutson – Hutson is a horse who has a very high ceiling. He does great things at home, and I love this game environment. He is a wizard with the puck, and already adept at running a top powerplay unit. He has a higher than normal chance to hit his ceiling in this game environment.
