Part the Cloud: A Deep Dive into Wide Receivers and Defensive Schemes for 2025 Week 3

Welcome back to “Part the Cloud” — where each week, we break down defensive coverage schemes and dive deep to uncover those hidden gem Wide Receivers that can give your DFS lineups the edge. Let’s get into it.

🎥 The Film Room

Before we look ahead, we look back. Process over results — always. If we’re seeing the field correctly, the results will come.

  • Amon-Ra St. Brown
    (DK: 6.0x | FD: 4.7x)
🔥 Straight fire. Amon-Ra absolutely torched the Bears for 115 yards on 9 catches and 3 touchdowns. I mentioned he was a Top 5 play last week — and he more than delivered.

  • Devonta Smith
    (DK: 1.7x | FD: 1.1x)
The game script didn’t help, but Smith still led the Eagles in receiving with 4 catches for 53 yards. It was a low-output game overall, but the process wasn’t wrong.

  • Josh Downs
    (DK: 2.4x | FD: 1.6x)
Downs led the team in both targets and catches, but the offense sputtered in the red zone (2 of 6), holding him back from a breakout. Still — the volume was promising.

🧠 11 Personnel: This Week’s WR Targets

Three-wide receiver sets dominate the NFL. So let’s roll with three of our own.

George Pickens

DK: $5000 (Proj. Ownership: 3.91%)
FD: $6200 (Proj. Ownership: 7.06%)

Everyone saw what Amon-Ra did to this Bears defense. CeeDee Lamb might be the trendy pick, but I’m more intrigued by George Pickens.

Jameson Williams’ big-play success last week showed the Bears are vulnerable to speed and vertical threats — and that’s Pickens’ wheelhouse. His proficiency in Dig routes, Go balls, crossers, and slants gives him a real shot to break this game wide open.

He’s also developing better chemistry in the offense, with a noticeable target share uptick from Week 1 to Week 2. If there’s a “coming out” moment this season for him — this could be it.

Alec Pierce

DK: $4300 (Proj. Ownership: 0.46%)
FD: $5300 (Proj. Ownership: 0.41%)

This is a pure matchup play — and I love it. Pierce should primarily face off against Jarvis Brownlee, who’s allowing a 124.8 passer rating when targeted.

Tennessee is sticking with a lot of Cover 3 and Cover 4, and Pierce is built to beat both. He thrives on crossing routes and nine routes, and if the Colts want to stay ahead, they’ll need him to stretch the field efficiently.

Indy is favored here — and if they’re going to win, Pierce’s success will be part of the formula.

Troy Franklin

DK: $4000 (Proj. Ownership: 5.72%)
FD: $5200 (Proj. Ownership: 3.13%)

Two weeks in, and Franklin is already Denver’s most productive WR. Now he gets a plus matchup against a division rival with a strong run defense, which could force Denver to the air.

He’s been killing it on crossers and screens — two routes that work well against the Chargers’ heavy Cover 4 looks. Vegas has Denver projected for 3+ TDs, and while they can get there a few ways, I don’t mind leaning on what’s working: Franklin as WR1.

🧾 In Summary

There are more WRs I’m tracking — but these three stand out as high-upside plays with low ownership and ideal matchups.
