NHL Building Blocks – January 8
Another small four-game slate tonight, and there are some good matchups and players in action. Let’s dive in!
The premise of each article in this series is to feature starting spots (building blocks) for your lines. These are plays that are cash-viable as well as GPP-worthy and can be considered in all contest formats.
Starting Lineup – January 8
The Goalie: Darcy Kuemper
Good matchup for Kuemper (11-2-5 / 2.22 / .920) and the Kings who get the Flames on a the second half of a road back-to-back. The Kings have allowed the fewest goals of any team in the league while Calgary has scored the third fewest.
The Center: Connor Bedard
Has been playing his best hockey of the season lately with points in seven straight games (three goals and six assists), and the Avs’ defense is still a little suspect, so he could get you different in a game that could see some scoring from both sides.
The Wing: Mikko Rantanen
Nine goals and 14 assists during his 14-game point streak and is currently second in the league in goals (24) and third in scoring). Great spot against a porous Blackhawks defense.
The Defenseman: Quinn Hughes
Hughes came back from injury last game and had two helpers in 26 minutes of ice time (it was an overtime contest), so he looks to be back to normal. The field may lean toward Makar, but I’m happy to go with Hughes here as this should be a competitive game against a tough Caps team.
The Value: Mackie Samosevich
Low floor, but decent ceiling as he’s still on PP1.
The Stack: FLA (Reinhart-Barkov-Tkachuk)
More people will flock toward Colorado and their good matchup, so I don’t mind shares of the Panthers here even on the road to get a little leverage. Utah is solid defensively, but Florida has a high ceiling.
