NHL Building Blocks – December 4
We’ve got a tidy four-gamer on the slate tonight at the mid-week point. Some plays stand out as solid, but should we play the chalk or go somewhere else? Let’s dive in!
The premise of each article in this series is to feature starting spots (building blocks) for your lines. These are plays that are cash-viable as well as GPP-worthy and can be considered in all contest formats.
Starting Lineup – December 4
The Goalie: Jake Oettinger
Perhaps the best goalie in the league, Oettinger (13-4-2 / 2.38 / .915) continues to be elite in all facets (and it helps that Dallas is one of the best defensive teams in hockey as well). Los Angeles is at home and does average three goals per game, but they rank in the bottom 10 in shots per contest. I like Dallas even on the road in this one.
The Center: Jack Eichel
The league’s third-leading scorer (36 points in 25 games) facing one of the worst defenses in the league, Eichel is playing some of his best hockey right now.
The Wing: Mitch Marner
Five goals and eight assists during his seven-game point streak, and with Auston Matthews back, the Leafs’ opponents will have to choose who to focus on (most likely Matthews), which should open up some space for him. The Preds’ defense can be scored on.
The Defenseman: Roman Josi
Playable in any format in any matchup as his floor is so high; five goals and three assists during his five-game point streak and is averaging nearly six shots and blocks combined per game on the season.
The Value: Pontus Holmberg
Skating on L2 with Marner and Tavares; kills penalties with the former.
The Stack: VGK (Eichel-Hertl-Barbashev)
Best matchup on the slate tonight based on opponent and offensive production; mix in Dorofeev and Roy as secondary pieces.
