NHL Building Blocks – December 31
We’ve got 10 games on the last main slate of 2024. (Also don’t forget that we have the Winter Classic at Wrigley this afternoon!) Let’s dive in!
The premise of each article in this series is to feature starting spots (building blocks) for your lines. These are plays that are cash-viable as well as GPP-worthy and can be considered in all contest formats.
Starting Lineup – December 31
The Goalie: Jacob Markstrom
Might have the best matchup tonight even on the road as the Devils face the lowly Ducks who have scored fewer goals than anyone in the league this season. Markstrom (19-6-2 / 2.11 / .914), conversely, has been excellent in his first season in New Jersey. Roster comfortably.
The Center: Jack Hughes
A few other stud centers on the slate, but Hughes is in one of the better matchups against the Ducks. 46 points (15 goals) in 39 games while taking 141 shots (fourth most in the league).
The Wing: Mikko Rantanen
Five goals and 13 assists during his 10-game point streak and is fourth in the league in scoring with 53 points (20 goals).
The Defenseman: Zach Werenski
39 points and a team-leading 131 shots through 37 games (at nearly 26 minutes a night). Floor and ceiling are great, and he’ll be needed against a tough Carolina squad.
The Value: Michael Bunting
Four goals and an assist over his last three games.
The Stack: EDM (McDavid-Draisaitl)
Against a tired Utah team on the second half of a back-to-back, I like this duo as a mini stack (and there’s enough value on the slate to make them fit). 12 goals and 32 assists between them over their last 11 games (the length of each of their point streaks).
