Part the Cloud: A Deep Dive into Wide Receivers and Defensive Schemes for Week 6

Welcome back to another week of “Part the Cloud,” where we dive deep into defensive coverage schemes and uncover hidden gem Wide Receivers.

Gotta Know Where You’ve Been…

Let’s take a moment to review last week’s performance in the context of the DraftKings Milly Maker:

  • Curtis Samuel: 0.9 Fantasy Points (FPTS) at 3.1% Ownership (0.21x)
  • Bo Melton: 2.2 FPTS at 3.7% Ownership (0.67x)
  • Tutu Atwell: 12.5 FPTS at 7% Ownership (2.6x)

It wasn’t a stellar week for us in Week 5, as none of our players made a significant impact. While Atwell started strong, he faded with fewer targets as the game progressed. Unfortunately, the other two were not heavily involved either.

But fear not—we’re looking to turn things around in Week 6!

…To Know Where You’re Going

This week, we’re venturing into some uncomfortable territory. The names on our radar may surprise you, and our reasoning goes beyond just Xs and Os. We’ll explore tendencies and gut instincts that could lead us to success.

Noah Brown

  • DraftKings: $3,900 | Projected Ownership: 1.86%
  • FanDuel: $4,700 | Projected Ownership: 1.63%

Multiple factors point me toward Noah Brown this week. The key to beating Baltimore lies in the air. As we analyze the Commanders’ pass catchers, it’s crucial to note that Daniels, under pressure, tends to escape to the right while still aiming to throw. Although the receivers are frequently moved around, Brown will primarily line up on the right side.

Brown excels in spot and curl routes—essential against zone defenses, especially Cover 4, which the Ravens utilize at a top 10 rate. They also employ a significant amount of Cover 6, indicating they prefer to keep plays in front of them, which suits Brown’s skill set.

Rashod Bateman

  • DraftKings: $4,100 | Projected Ownership: 4.68%
  • FanDuel: $5,500 | Projected Ownership: 2.94%

Staying in the same game, I have high hopes for Rashod Bateman. His chemistry with Lamar Jackson is improving, translating into a more prominent role. The Commanders frequently employ man coverage, and we’ve seen number one receivers thrive against them.

Given the potential for fewer pass attempts, I want to leverage Bateman’s ability to beat man coverage and the generous tendencies of his opposing cornerback, Mike Sainristil, who is allowing a 73.7% catch rate.

Jalen Tolbert

  • DraftKings: $5,000 | Projected Ownership: 9.75%
  • FanDuel: $6,100 | Projected Ownership: 6.04%

I’m excited about Jalen Tolbert’s matchup this week against Carlton Davis, who is allowing over a 70% catch rate. Dallas has adjusted their offense to highlight Tolbert’s strengths, while Lamb’s role has evolved. Tolbert thrives on deep routes, particularly Nine routes, and with Detroit running man coverage at a top 5 rate, he’s set up for success against their defensive schemes.
