Part the Cloud: A Deep Dive into Wide Receivers through Defensive Schemes for Week 4

Welcome back to another week of “Part the Cloud,” where we delve into defensive coverage schemes to uncover hidden gem Wide Receivers!

Last Week’s Highlights

In Week 3, we analyzed four receivers. Here’s how they performed in the DraftKings Milly Maker:

  • Zay Flowers: 5.3 DK Fantasy Points (FPTS) at 5.5% ownership (0.76x)
  • Stefon Diggs: 19.9 FPTS at 4% ownership (3.0x)
  • Justin Jefferson: 20.1 FPTS at 8.5% ownership (2.3x)
  • Michael Wilson: 14.4 FPTS at 1.7% ownership (3.5x)

Key Takeaways:

  • Zay Flowers had potential but missed the mark by a wide margin.
  • Stefon Diggs delivered a solid performance.
  • Justin Jefferson had a strong day but narrowly missed a breakout.
  • Michael Wilson excelled at just $4,100.

Let’s keep the party going into Week 4!

Looking Ahead: Week 4 Matchups

This week brings better implied team totals compared to last week, and there are several intriguing options. Let’s highlight a few:

1. DJ Moore

  • DraftKings: $6,700 (Projected Ownership: 6.15%)
  • FanDuel: $6,500 (Projected Ownership: 0%)

Caleb Williams is making a lot of first-read throws, reminiscent of his USC days. While this strategy may not be sustainable, the Rams’ struggling pass defense won’t punish him for it. Moore’s matchup against Tre’Davious White is particularly appealing, as White has been consistently burned, allowing multiple touchdowns. Moore is difficult for defenders to contain, especially in zone coverage, making him a prime target this week.

2. Jayden Reed

  • DraftKings: $6,000 (Projected Ownership: 7.22%)
  • FanDuel: $6,300 (Projected Ownership: 10.79%)

With Jordan Love expected to start, I’m confident in attacking the Vikings’ defense. Reed is well-equipped to excel against man coverage and has become Love’s favorite target. Given the Vikings’ strong run defense, the aerial attack will be crucial, and Reed stands to benefit significantly.

3. Brian Thomas Jr.

  • DraftKings: $5,400 (Projected Ownership: 3.19%)
  • FanDuel: $5,800 (Projected Ownership: 4.42%)

The Jaguars frequently use man coverage, particularly single-high coverage. While many are eyeing Nico Collins, Brian Thomas Jr. presents a strong counter-option. Houston predominantly runs Cover 3 or Cover 4, making Thomas Jr. a reliable receiver against these coverages. Doug Pederson will likely lean on curl routes to exploit these zones, and Thomas Jr.’s ability to succeed in this area could boost Lawrence’s confidence in him.

4. Rome Odunze

  • DraftKings: $5,200 (Projected Ownership: 1.4%)
  • FanDuel: $6,400 (Projected Ownership: 1.18%)

Odunze deserves mention, especially as a secondary target for Caleb Williams. While DJ Moore may have a better matchup, Odunze is likely to see plenty of targets further downfield, making him a valuable option.
