Zero to Hero:  Dominating the NHL Season with Smart Bets – October 20

Hi, all.  Over halfway through October…the weather is changing…the holidays are right around the corner…  What a great time of year.

The premise of each article in this series is to feature a few “safe” foundational plays to build some strong cash lines around as well as to offer any props or straight bets that have some solid potential.  We’re looking for players and teams that have a solid floor and are in a good spot matchup-wise; these will be the building blocks of a booming bankroll.  (Yeah, I alliterized…deal with it.)  I will also provide a recap from the day before and rewind to see if we were on the right plays.  Keep in mind that just like a regular season, the building of a solid bankroll is a grind – it requires patience, mental fortitude, and discipline to weather the cold streaks until things turn around and you go on a heater.

Recap from 10/19

THE BUILDER – OCTOBER 20
The Player Builder
:  Jonathan Huberdeau ($5000 DK / $5500 FD)
Huberdeau has had a very nice start to the season.  He has scored twice (on ten shots). and added two assists.  He is seeing more than 18 minutes of ice time (including on the top power play line) and is becoming more aggressive in the offensive end.  I like him as a core play tonight not only because of his price and game situation against the Blue Jackets, but also as a pivot on this two-gamer from some of the more expensive Devils players who face a tougher goalie.

The Stack Builder:  CGY1 (Lindholm/Huberdeau/Mangiapane/Andersson/Hanifin
This is where the bulk of the production has come from for Calgary thus far.  Between these players, we have six goals and 16 assists.  There’s not much reason to look too far beyond these players to find the sources of offense for the Flames.  The Blue Jackets are taking eight fewer shots per game than the Flames while allowing nearly seven more, so the offensive opportunity should skew in Calgary’s favor tonight, which further enhances the floor and ceiling of this line.  There is also the possibility that many players will gravitate toward the sexier Devils players, which is fine by me.  Calgary is around a -155 favorite, so I feel comfortable building around these players tonight on this small slate.

The Bet Builder:  Jonathan Huberdeau O 1.5 SOG / Rasmus Andersson O 1.5 SOG parlay (around +140)
These two Flames players have been extremely active so far this season in terms of shot volume.  In four games, Huberdeau has taken 10 shots and Andersson has 11 of his own.  Both players play together on the top even strength line as well as the top power play line, so they are each well-versed in how the other plays.  Calgary faces the Blue Jackets tonight, who have given up the fourth most shots in the league thus far at just under 36 per game.  This parlay can be found at nice plus odds tonight.
