Detroit Pistons @ Charlotte Hornets

We’ll kick this slate off with the Pistons who are a big question mark tonight. Isaiah Stewart and Bojan Bogdanovic come into this one as questionable while Jalen Duren and Jaden Ivey have already been ruled out. I would expect to see more James Wiseman and Marvin Bagley tonight regardless of if Stewart/Bogdanovic end up playing, both will make sense as value options especially if either or both of them end up starting. With Ivey out, we could see Alec Burks or Hamidou Diallo slide into the starting lineup while Killian Hayes should see a nice boost in the backcourt. Burks and Hayes would be my favorite options here, Hayes has a 21.4% usage rate and 0.99 fantasy points per minute while Burks is right in that range as well. They get a great matchup, this team is going to be extremely interesting tonight, but we’ll need more news on them as we get closer to lock, make sure you have that Breaking News Feed open and available! From the Hornets, Terry Rozier and Kelly Oubre have returned to the lineup which muddy’s the water a bit but Oubre is still on a bit of a minutes restriction while Rozier is more of a secondary option even on a short slate. LaMelo Ball has at least 62 DraftKings points in three of his last four games and has seen his price come down since last night. It’s a great matchup, he’s going to be a nice option in all formats. Mark Williams went bananas last time out and is a guy I like going right back to in this one, especially with Detroit being shorthanded in the frontcourt. PJ Washington will miss this game again with that foot injury, we saw JT Thor start and play 26 minutes in his place last time out, but he’s a cardio guy, no need to get to him even at min price. Gordon Hayward should benefit with him out and makes sense in all formats.
5-star play: James Wiseman, Killian Hayes, LaMelo Ball, Mark Williams
4-star play: Alec Burks, Bojan Bogdanovic, Isaiah Stewart, Terry Rozier, Gordon Hayward
Deeper Value: Alec Burks, Hamidou Diallo
GPP Sleeper: Hamidou Diallo, Kelly Oubre, Nick Richards
Miami Heat @ Philadelphia 76ers

Starting with the Heat, Tyler Herro bounced back in a big way last time out but does come into this one as questionable. Assuming he’s good to go here, I have no issue going back to him as a secondary option in all formats. The same can be said for Jimmy Butler and I always like getting to him in these high-energy eastern conference games… also, a revenge game as he heads back into Philly. Bam Adebayo is in that boat as well, but he’ll have his hands full with Embiid down low. Then guys like Max Strus, Gabe Vincent, and Victor Oladipo will continue to fill the void left by Kyle Lowry who could actually return here, but I think we can do better on this slate. Kevin Love was a core play for all of us last time out and for good reason, he’s going to see minutes with Miami and have a real role that he didn’t with the Cavs. His price tag has come way up, but he’s still a solid option and would expect to see around 25 minutes for him again here. From the Sixers, Joel Embiid kept it rolling last time out and now has at least 60 DraftKings points in four of his last five, I don’t love the matchup, but on a short slate, he’s going to look like an elite spend up option. James Harden has been in great form and has been extremely consistent, he’s a nice option in all formats at a great price tag. Tobias Harris and Tyrese Maxey are GPP guys who will need to fight for usage with Embiid and Harden as the main pieces in the offense. Maxey’s minutes are trending in the right direction which is good to see at the very least. Oh… and can I interest you in some PJ Tucker revenge coming off of a big game last time out?
5-star play: Joel Embiid
4-star play: Bam Adebayo, Jimmy Butler, Tyler Herro, Kevin Love, James Harden, Tobias Harris, Tyrese Maxey
Deeper Value: PJ Tucker
GPP Sleeper: Max Strus, Gabe Vincent, Victor Oladipo, De’Anthony Melton, PJ Tucker
Quick shoutout to VIP member “Cenzamatic” on a massive $20k win last season! Sometimes paying up for double studs works, and Giannis Antetokounmpo and Kevin Durant brought it home for him with the help of some Stanley Johnson and Pistons value. Good work and congrats man!
Boston Celtics @ New York Knicks
Vegas Total: 223.5
Vegas Spread: Bos -2.0
Starting with the Celtics, they’ll be without Jaylen Brown in this one which should throw Derrick White back into the starting lineup. Below is how this team operates with Brown off of the court this season:
- Marcus Smart – 17.9% usage rate; 1.00 fpm
- Derrick White – 21.3% usage rate; 1.07 fpm
- Jayson Tatum – 35.5% usage rate; 1.41 fpm
- Al Horford – 13.2% usage rate; 0.89 fpm
- Robert Williams – 12.2% usage rate; 1.04 fpm
This Knicks defense doesn’t scare me so the Celtics will look good as a whole. Malcolm Brogdon will see a boost off of the bench as well but is priced up from Brown being out before the break, so he’s right where he probably should be. Tatum is averaging 54.8 DraftKings points per game in two games against the Knicks this season and is right there with Embiid as a top spend-up option on this slate. I do like the Marcus Smart price tag a good amount as well with a boost to his rates. From the Knicks, Mitchell Robinson has quickly returned to his normal role and is a guy I think makes sense in all formats against a bad rebounding team. Josh Hart finally came down to Earth last night and isn’t going to see minutes in the mid-30s like he was with the Blazers, so he’s more of a secondary option here for me. Julius Randle is interesting at this price tag, he’s going to play all the minutes he can handle and this is the cheapest we’ve seen him in a long time. Jalen Brunson had a down game relative to his price tag, it seems Randle and Brunson aren’t guys that can have big games on the same night, I’ve been avoiding using them in the same lineup if possible. Then, RJ Barrett bounced back nicely last time out but has been a bit more scoring dependent than I’d like to see, but on a short slate, he’s firmly in play.
5-star play: Jayson Tatum, Julius Randle
4-star play: Marcus Smart, Derrick White, Robert Williams, Malcolm Brogdon, Jalen Brunson, RJ Barrett, Mitchell Robinson
Deeper Value: None
GPP Sleeper: Al Horford, Josh Hart, RJ Barrett
Orlando Magic @ New Orleans Pelicans
Vegas Total: 227.0
Vegas Spread: Nop -4.0
Starting with the Magic, Jalen Suggs was able to bounce back last time out and makes sense as a secondary value option. He’s too volatile for cash games but makes plenty of sense in tournaments. Markelle Fultz has been extremely consistent over their last handful of games and is a nice option at this price tag in a nice matchup. Paolo Banchero is a fine option, but he’s been volatile relative to his current price tag. Franz Wagner bounced back last time out and we know the minutes will be there, he’s a solid option to fill in a roster. Then Wendell Carter Jr. came down to Earth last time out but only played 18 minutes in a terrible shooting night, I like this as a bounce-back spot for him. From the Pelicans, CJ McCollum is a fine option, his price tag did come down and the matchup doesn’t exactly scare me, he’s just not a guy I feel the need to prioritize on this slate. Brandon Ingram is probably my preferred option on this team, he leads the team with a 32.9% usage rate and 1.18 fantasy points per minute on the season with Zion off of the court. Jonas Valanciunas is a GPP-only guy option due to his volatility, but we know the ceiling is there when he’s right and the price tag is nice considering the size of the slate. Then guys like Trey Murphy, Larry Nance, and Herb Jones are fine flyer options on the wing, but not guys we need to prioritize by any means.
5-star play: None
4-star play: Markelle Fultz, Paolo Banchero, Wendell Carter Jr., Franz Wagner, CJ McCollum, Brandon Ingram, Jonas Valanciunas
Deeper Value: None
GPP Sleeper: Jalen Suggs, Paolo Banchero, Cole Anthony, Trey Murphy, Larry Nance, Herb Jones

NBA Lock of the Day: James Wiseman (DK – $3.7k; FD – $4.8k)
His price tag is obviously better on DraftKings, but I think he’s in play on FanDuel given the size of the slate as well. The Pistons will be without Jalen Duren while Isaiah Stewart and Bojan Bogdanovic come in as questionable. I would imagine he’s right back in the starting lineup and gets an elite matchup in this one. At this point in the day, I would think he makes my core, but check out our VIP Cheat Sheets as we get closer to lock for staff picks on Core plays, 8x locks of the day, and tiers notes as well!
