When injury news comes out, the lines surrounding that player will remain the same for a few minutes. The best picks are the ones that come from that player’s game as these lines are likely to be too low or too high depending on which way the news breaks. These are removed quickly so it is important to stay on top of the news to get the best value picks.

PrizePicks NBA Plays for Tonight…

Jayson Tatum Over 6.5rebs
BOS vs PHI
The Boston Celtics will begin the season without center Robert Williams. This likely means Tatum will shift to the power forward spot and Derrick White will start. Anytime Robert Williams is out, Al Horford becomes the biggest beneficiary in his absence. Horford is set at 7.5 rebounds against Joel Embiid. He should have his hands full trying to box him out. This should give Tatum plenty of rebounding chances. These two teams are solid defensively which will translate into misses and more rebounding opportunities. Taking Timelord off the court last season, Tatum saw just a small 0.05reb boost to his per 36 minute stats. Boston’s backup center could be Blake Griffin. Danilo Gallinari is another signee but he tore his ACL during international play this summer. Boston does not have anyone who commands a high rebounding rate. Tatum should benefit on the boards with this roster. The over 6.5 line is -160 on DraftKings.
Joel Embiid Over 2.5asts
PHI @ BOS
Joel Embiid will have an easier matchup than expected today with Robert Williams out. However, this is no easy spot. He and Al Horford have matched up many times. The Celtics send double teams often against Embiid. This started when Brad Stevens was the coach. Ime Udoka implemented the same strategy. It would make sense for Joe Mazzulla to continue sending doubles as this Celtics roster has only made minor changes over the past few seasons. Boston likes to double off of the entry passer. This gives Embiid an easy pass back out. Teams will give players different looks meaning Boston could help the helper which would force a longer pass back out. Philadelphia added shooting this offseason with De’Anthony Melton. Corner specialist PJ Tucker shot 41.5% from deep last season albeit on low volume. Embiid is an underrated passer in a matchup where the opponent would prefer the others to beat them and not Embiid. On sportsbooks, Embiid’s assist line is set at 3.5.
Anthony Davis Over 21.5pts
LAL @ GSW
Anthony Davis is every fantasy player’s worst nightmare. If you pick him, he gets hurt. If you don’t, he puts up a 30 and 10 game. The Lakers are a tricky situation. New head coach Darvin Ham has yet to announce a starting lineup. He tested out Russell Westbrook as a sixth man but went down with a hamstring injury. His status is up in the air. Anthony Davis will start and play his full allotment of minutes on opening night. We will dive deeper into the lineup situation later. Golden State kept its championship roster pretty much intact. Kevon Looney should start, but James Wiseman should see some good minutes to match up with AD. AD is too big for Looney. Though he has looked great in preseason, Wiseman is unproven. AD and LeBron are the stars for this Lakers team and will need to have big games to beat the Warriors. This game has a 227 total and the Lakers are 6 point underdogs. AD’s line is set at 23.5 on DK.
Patrick Beverley Under 4asts
LAL @ GSW
When I first saw this line, I thought it was the best pick on the board. Beverley starting alongside Westbrook and LeBron would mean minimal ball handling opportunities. However, there is a chance Kendrick Nunn starts over Beverley. Though this could mean less playing time for Pat Bev, he would get to run the second unit and play as more of a point guard. Then, it was announced that Westbrook could come off the bench. That experiment was not even tested as Westbrook picked up an injury. The lineup will be key for this pick. If Westbrook misses this game or is on a significant minutes restriction, do NOT take this. Beverley would start at PG. I do not see a scenario where if Westbrook is out, Beverley does not start. It is possible they both start. They could also start one but not the other. The most ideal situation would be the two both start so Beverley’s assists chances are limited.
