NHL DFS Tournament Picks and Strategy | Snipes, Grinders, and Hard Passes Projections for Fanduel and Draftkings 3/5/22

DFS NHL is a volatile sport centering around correlation, stacking and game theory.  Learning how to win cash games and tournaments requires nailing those great upside plays/stacks, grabbing obvious value, and making the proper fades that sink everyone else’s ships.  Let’s look through today’s slate and identify those winning picks in “Snipes, Grinders, and Hard Passes!”

All of my plays make sense for the entire DFS industry; however, if there is an egregious discrepancy in player salary between sites, I will mention it in my briefing.

Snipe = Good Play
Grinder = Value Plays (Grinders are Valuable)
Hard-Pass = I’m fading in tournaments

DFS NHL Slate Overview:

Medium sized slate tonight, trade deadline looming, a few superstar stacks to choose from; who doesn’t love hockey? There are some smash spots tonight, 3 to be exact, and I will tell you about 2 of them in detail here shortly. The one I will not mention is Toronto, because everyone knows that they are currently the best top line in hockey and have a good matchup. Other sneaky spots include the Boston/Columbus game which is a huge game standings wise, as well as Rick Nash getting his jersey retired tonight. Also Nashville/San Jose both could put up some numbers and also be low owned.

Correlated Snipe #1

Alex Ovechkin – Evgeny Kuznetsov – Tom Wilson

The most beloved line in hockey is at home against the Seattle Kraken who are both terrible and probably trading their best players at the deadline. I really don’t know what Ron Francis’ strategy was when building this team, but it hasn’t worked out for the Kraken. Washington has to keep winning consistently to maintain that final playoff spot in the east, and they are a veteran team that shouldn’t take any other team lightly in the NHL. Even though I think Washington will keep that spot and make the playoffs, Capitals fans know the annoyance that Columbus brings who are quietly in the background and have plenty of games to play against the Capitals. With that being said, the Capitals know that a home game against the Kraken needs to result in 2 points, and I think they get the job done. I don’t really have much to say, because I think that even non-NHL fans know who Alex Ovechkin is, and that Russian machine scores goals.

Correlated Snipe #2

Leon Draisaitl – Evander Kane – Kailer Yamamoto

The Oilers are fighting for the playoffs essentially every single game, and Montreal should be trying to tank for a lottery pick. Everyone knows the type of world class player Draisaitl is, and with McDavid being the hot topic of discussion always, the Draisaitl line may be less owned than we think. Not to mention he is playing with the bankrupt and determined Evander Kane, who is playing for his life and NHL career. Kane has nothing but hockey now with his marriage and personal life in shambles, and trying to restore his finances, he will be putting everything into his craft, and he was already a damned good hockey player to begin with. Also, he gets to play with world class talent. Yamamoto is also a nice young player that gets to pick and choose his spots, and I am betting that this line has ample chances against the bottom 3 team that hasn’t stopped a puck all year in the Montreal Canadiens.

Hard Pass #1

The Avalanche/Flames game

Yes, I am fading a game that consists of 2 of the top teams in the west. There is a lot of high priced talent in this game, but both defenses are stacked, and they both have amazing goaltenders. So, what I’m expecting is a no nonsense game from each side where both teams are being overly cautious.

NHL Grinder Value Plays

Grinder #1

Nickolas Robertson – This kid has been a prospect for the Leafs for quite some time, and no it appears that they are giving him a trial run to try to spark the Tavares/Nylander line. I find this super interesting at the minimum salary on Draftkings.

Grinder#2

Brendan Gallagher – This guy never ever quits and has zero nonsense to his game and I love him. Yes, he plays for Montreal, but Edmonton isn’t known for their stifling defense or immaculate goaltending; and, Gallagher has 13 shots in his last 3 games, so he is trying to throw some rubber.

Good luck, I hope you all come in 2nd.  😉
