DFS NHL is a volatile sport centering around correlation, stacking and game theory. Learning how to win cash games and tournaments requires nailing those great upside plays/stacks, grabbing obvious value, and making the proper fades that sink everyone else’s ships. Let’s look through today’s slate and identify those winning picks in “Snipes, Grinders, and Hard Passes!”
All of my plays make sense for the entire DFS industry; however, if there is an egregious discrepancy in player salary between sites, I will mention it in my briefing.
Snipe = Good Play
Grinder = Value Plays (Grinders are Valuable)
Hard-Pass = I’m fading in tournaments
DFS NHL Slate Overview:
Big slate, a lot of star power, and less than 3 weeks away from the trade deadline; what could go wrong? Whenever the Oilers are on the slate, decisions have to be made about roster construction. With the Avalanche, Panthers, and Bruins, as well as other high profile superstars on this slate, the Oilers may go overlooked a tad, but I always deem that touting McDavid is kind of a cop out on my end. With that being said, let’s discuss some spots, as well as the Oilers’ opponent tonight, the Chicago Blackhawks.
Snipes and Hard Passes for Tonight

Correlated Snipe #1
Patrick Kane – Dominik Kubalik – Dylan Strome
In what seems to be a game that has one of the highest team totals on the slate, the high upside Blackhawks peak my interest. Patrick Kane throughout his career plays with a different sense of urgency at home in the United Center, and the Oilers are coming in slightly banged up with the same lackluster roster from the aspect of defense. When searching for the big Happy Gilmour check in tournaments you must incur some risk that could pay dividends. Sure Patrick Kane should anchor your lineup in this stack, but we are looking at a Dylan Strome that has scored a hat trick before; as well as a Kubalik that scored I believe 5 goals in a single playoff game. Kubalik has played down in the lineup most of this year, so I have to assume that moving up with Kane will get the youngster’s juices flowing. As a wise man once said, you have to risk it to get the biscuit. I am hungry and biscuits sound good; does anyone have any delicious jams or jellies?
Correlated Snipe #2
Mason Marchment – Aleksander Barkov – Carter Verhaeghe
I shouldn’t really have to say much to explain why the matchup here is a good one; simply look at the league standings, and deductive reasoning should let the rest figure itself out. With that being said, the addition of Marchment on the top line interests the hell out of me with Barkov. Marchment has shown a remarkable ceiling this season; and much like my take on Kubalik, I believe the youngster’s promotion to play with Barkov will get his juices flowing. Playing on the top line of a top team in the best league on the planet is an accomplishment in of itself; however, Marchment now has the chance to really make a statement and show that he is a force to be reckoned with. These kids are taking over the league; enjoy them.

Hard Pass #1
The Penguins/Lightning game
The Penguins play that greasy style that wins close hockey games, and Tampa Bay sports a hall of fame goalie that is still in his 20’s. I never stack against Vasilevskiy, and I typically don’t stack against the Penguins, so common sense on my part says no thank you. Also, these players are expensive, and there are so, so, so, so, so many other good spots to spend your salary tonight.

NHL Grinder Value Plays
Grinder #1
Sean Monohan – Weird as hell seeing him below $3000 on Draftkings even though he did move down in the lineup, and is producing less. With that being said, he is on a line with Tyler Toffoli, and is on the 2nd powerplay unit; and, oh yeah, the Canadiens are super terrible.
Grinder#2
William Karlsson – Another weird one where a very solid player is this cheap, but here we are. Karlsson’s role may not be to score 40 goals anymore, but he can still play, and plays in all special teams situations as well.
Good luck, I hope you all come in 2nd. 😉
