DFS NHL is a volatile sport centering around correlation, stacking and game theory. Learning how to win cash games and tournaments requires nailing those great upside plays/stacks, grabbing obvious value, and making the proper fades that sink everyone else’s ships. Let’s look through today’s slate and identify those winning picks in “Snipes, Grinders, and Hard Passes!”
All of my plays make sense for the entire DFS industry; however, if there is an egregious discrepancy in player salary between sites, I will mention it in my briefing.
Snipe = Good Play
Grinder = Value Plays (Grinders are Valuable)
Hard-Pass = I’m fading in tournaments
DFS NHL Slate Overview:
This is my first slate back since the trade deadline has passed, and there are a ton of games, a ton of new faces on new teams, as well as the Edmonton McDavid’s playing on this slate. Unheard of amount of options, where will guys slot in? Let me take you through one of my favorite stacks, as well as how to make a new chalkier stack more contrarian.
Snipes and Hard Passes for Tonight

Correlated Snipe #1
Aleksander Barkov – Claude Giroux – Mackenzie Weegar
Ok, so the shiny new toy in Florida is Claude Giroux, and he will make this a chalkier first line with Barkov than it usually is. So, to counteract and navigate the inflated ownership of Carter Verhague or whoever is slated to be on the first line with Barkov/Giroux, I am simply going to take Mackenzie Weegar. Weegar has been Mr. Steady Eddie defenseman guy for his entire career, but he has opened up his game a little bit and is quietly having a breakout season. As we know, Aaron Ekblad is a major part of this Panthers franchise and he went down, and is out for the remainder of the regular season. The Panthers added some nice defensive pieces at the deadline with Chariot and Haag; but the answer to all of the Aaron Ekblad questions was already suiting up for them, and that is Mackenzie Weegar. Not many roster builds are going to stack the Panthers this way; and, the Panthers will have opportunities to both get creative and get Giroux acquainted against the already bad (and got worse after the deadline) Montreal Canadiens.
Correlated Snipe #2
Jack Eichel – William Karlsson – Jonathan Marchessault
Nashville has played a lot of hockey recently, and a Thursday night game after the trade deadline in Vegas, will be a tough ask for the Predators. The Golden Knights are super desperate, great historically at home, and I just love the offensive game of all three players on this line. With Pacioretty and Stone not available, Karlsson and Marchessault slot in alongside Jack Eichel. Eichel is trying to live up to expectations and shoulder this wounded Knights team to stay in playoff contention through the crazy western conference wildcard race. Karlsson can score goals, he showed that in his 40 goal season during the Golden Knights inaugural season; and with that being said, he is still probably scouted as the 3rd best scoring option on that first line. Head coach Peter Debour is trying to spark his team by having his top 2 centers play together, to try to create some much needed offense. Marchessault, not much to say there, sneaky good and super creative; also, has played with Karlsson forever. Mix that with Eichel just pouring pucks on net, and I see this line forechecking the hell out of the Predators all night with that crazy and desperate crowd behind them.

Hard Pass #1
Lightning/Bruins game
A ton of big names in a giant matchup in the Atlantic division. Both of these teams bolster incredibly impressive bluelines, as well as very solid goaltending. These games are typically slugfests, and there are better spots on this slate for how expensive these guys are, in my opinion. Also, Brad Marchand may be around 15 pounds overweight after eating 25 boxes of his recently released cereal, that donates money to charities.

NHL Grinder Value Plays
Grinder #1
Jeff Petry – Petry has reached the blocked shots bonus on Draftkings in his last 6 games, and he should be getting peppered with shots against the Florida Panthers. The Canadiens traded a lot of older guys away; why is Petry still a Canadien?
Grinder#2
Joel Farabee – Another younger guy who I think is one of the only Flyers that will be thought of as someone to build around. I don’t love the spot, but I really like the player; and I think they might see what they have in Farabee here towards the end of the season.
Good luck, I hope you all come in 2nd. 😉
