NHL DFS Tournament Picks and Strategy | Snipes, Grinders, and Hard Passes Projections for Fanduel and Draftkings 3/18/22

DFS NHL is a volatile sport centering around correlation, stacking and game theory.  Learning how to win cash games and tournaments requires nailing those great upside plays/stacks, grabbing obvious value, and making the proper fades that sink everyone else’s ships.  Let’s look through today’s slate and identify those winning picks in “Snipes, Grinders, and Hard Passes!”

All of my plays make sense for the entire DFS industry; however, if there is an egregious discrepancy in player salary between sites, I will mention it in my briefing.

Snipe = Good Play
Grinder = Value Plays (Grinders are Valuable)
Hard-Pass = I’m fading in tournaments

DFS NHL Slate Overview:

Any slate without McDavid or Matthews in it makes it more fun for me, because then you don’t have to decide whether or not to play or fade these slate breaking expensive guys. There aren’t too many great spots tonight, so I will simply go over my 2 favorite core lines to play tonight that you should strongly consider building around tonight. The trade deadline is approaching, so the guys that will surely get dealt may sit out IE Hampus Lindholm, and some of the other “maybes” at the trade deadline, could start seeing reduced minutes to avoid injury.

Correlated Snipe #1

Elias Lindholm – Johnny Gaudreau – Matthew Tkatchuk

I will keep this one short, because one of the best lines in the entire NHL is playing a home game against Buffalo. The Flames have been nearly unstoppable at the Saddledome this season and Buffalo still sucks, even though they have been way better than we thought they would be. This line averages over a point per game, and quite frankly Gaudreau should at least be in the Hart trophy consideration, even though he wouldn’t win it; he deserves the recognition. Also, remember, this is a contract year for Gaudreau, so if he closes this season out strong and performs well in the postseason, this could be an $11M a year man here. It is crazy that all 3 of these players are averaging over a point per game, but that’s where we are in 2022, easily my top stack tonight.

Correlated Snipe #2

Nathan Mackinnon – Mikko Rantanen – Valeri Nichushkin

These guys are up against the Sharks tonight, who are kind of in a retooling phase. I don’t see much issue with these Colorado guys scoring against the Sharks with everything that’s going on. Erik Karlsson is still getting his legs under him after his long injury, Brent Burns has never been good at actual defense, Vlasic is 100 years old by now, and Middleton could get traded any minute now; top that iffy Sharks blueline with shotty goaltending, and we have a high upside stack on our hands with Mackinnon and company.

Hard Pass #1

Flyers/Senators

A lot of trade talks on these 2 sides which scares the hell out of me; I guess the Stuetzle line may be safe and they are playing against crappy Martin Jones, but other than them, this game screams unnecessary risk to me. The Senators have a bunch of pending UFAs that they want to deal, and Pierre Dorian has even publically said he wants teams to call about them; and nobody is really safe in Philly from trade. The Flyers are bad by accident, and Chuck Fletcher’s money cannon has gotten them into trouble with a bunch of bad contracts on old and injured players, and they already traded a bunch of picks for this year’s draft to strengthen this year’s team last summer.

NHL Grinder Value Plays

Grinder #1

Alexander Barabanov – Exciting young player that the Sharks are going to want to build around. I don’t love the spot, but he is safe from trade, they want him to play a lot, he is way too cheap, and he has the green light.

Grinder#2

Joel Farabee – Another younger guy who I think is one of the only Flyers safe from trade. Again, I don’t love the spot, but iI really like the player; and I think they might see what they have in Farabee here towards the end of the season.

Good luck, I hope you all come in 2nd.  😉
