Is Colin Kaepernick the New Tim Tebow? NFL Fans Just Can't Quit Him

Colin Kaepernick is a thing again! This time five teams are interesting, possibly one very seriously. Will Colin play this year?

Is Colin Kaepernick the New Tim Tebow? NFL Fans Just Can't Quit Him

It’s been roughly six years since Colin Kaepernick took the knee that shook the NFL world and social media.  But, here we go again as he makes yet another push to get back into the professional football world.  Is there substance to the claim, or is this just more hype and more bark than bite?

Colin Kaepernick is planning to release his memoir this year through a new publish company he is starting.

Stop Me If This Sounds Familiar

In 2010, we had another household name burst onto the scene named Tim Tebow.  The Heisman winner was in a different situation than Colin Kaepernick, of course, but Tebow kept on surfacing with NFL teams for years.  It seemed the fans couldn’t quit Tebow for five or six years until Tebow gave up football for baseball and pursued a career with the New York Mets from 2016 to 2021.

Here we are five years down the road from Kaepernick’s last game in the NFL, and fans just can’t quit him either.  There are currently five teams rumored to have interest in a Kaepernick comeback (according to one of his trainers, David Robinson).  While those teams have not been specifically named, the 34-year old former 49ers quarterback has been flying all over the country for a month literally throwing to anyone willing to watch.  He has been seen in these NFL cities recently…

  • Arizona Cardinals
  • New Orleans Saints
  • Dallas Cowboys
  • Atlanta Falcons
  • Seattle Seahawks

Does Colin Kaepernick Still Have What It Takes?

According to trainer David Robinson, he most definitely has what it takes to play at an NFL level.

Robinson also said, “A few teams have reached out to me and asked how his arm looked … They have reached out and asked about him. He definitely has the ability to play on somebody’s roster — like, right now.”

Coaches and Trainers Are One Thing, What About Owners?

That’s the 20 million dollar question.  After all, it’s the owners that decide if the ability to win outweighs the potential lightning rod of polarization that certainly will come with Colin Kaepernick these days.

It’s clear there aren’t enough good quarterbacks to go around the NFL right now.  Heck, there are barely enough mediocre to bad ones.  The current situation opens the door again for a gamble on a quarterback that has proven to be good in the past.  In his last full season, Kaepernick played 12 games and threw for 2200+ yds with a 59% completion rate.  He also rushed for nearly 500 yds and a couple of touchdowns.  These might be serviceable enough to take a chance when the NFL is offering nothing overwhelmingly better.

But, any serious temptation to sign Colin will be met with an immediate alienation of at least some portion of any fanbase.  Kaepernick’s viability is clearly not as much about his skills as it is about a team’s broader business interests and ability to generate revenue and profit.  Right or wrong, in your opinion, these are just the times in which we live.  Teams just don’t seem to want the headache.

But, There Is One Team Seriously Considering Colin Kaepernick

If Colin comes back to the NFL, the Seattle Seahawks are the favorite to take the gamble.

Seattle could also be a great fit after trading franchise quarterback Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos this offseason.  The Seahawks are on record as “confident in Drew Locke,” but Colin Kaepernick might be a nice depth piece.
