C’mon, Gary Bettman!! There is no way on earth the Arizona Coyotes should still be an NHL franchise. None. Zero. I can’t think of one solid reason.
NHL commissioner Gary Bettman has historically had a soft spot for the Coyotes, and the reasoning is both unknown and illogical. I will start by saying that the actual Coyotes fans that are out there are as loyal as it gets, and are as passionate as any in the league; hell, they produced Auston Matthews, who could eventually have the all time goals record.
The problem? There just aren’t that many fans of the franchise, as the Coyotes are always in the bottom 3rd in attendance. As a result, Arizona isn’t really a hot-spot for free agents. The Coyotes are often looking for warm bodies to play on their NHL team, and they are always trading whatever relevant players they have for future cheap assets. Good luck competing with that default plan.

3 Keys to Franchise Ruin
Bad Franchise Ownership
The overall ownership has gotten so bad over the years the Coyotes have more assets in draft pick capital than they do actual human hockey players. They are always fighting to be at the salary cap floor, and are even trading for injured players like Bryan Little to get to it. Ownership didn’t pay their bills/taxes in their current arena, which put them in a position where the city of Glendale had to kick them out. Evicted! Gone. Do not pass go; do not collect $200.
The Phoenix Suns didn’t want to host them, either. With only one place to turn, the cost of remodeling Arizona State University’s hockey arena (where the Coyotes will eventually play) had to be paid up front. Yikes!
Arizona State University as a Stadium?
Yes, we have heard that ASU’s arena holds 5,000 people. But, after the regulations needing to be met in regards to the locker rooms accommodating professional athletes, ASU’s arena may only be able to hold 3,200 people. This is an impossible situation for a team to be profitable; which raises the argument that the Coyotes should not be allowed to participate in revenue sharing. They will certainly suckle on the teat of the NHL like a 6 year-old with teeth.
The NHL has an agreement that each team receives X-percentage of annual revenue of the NHL’s net profits equally across all the teams. However, the Coyotes are going to absolutely have to be running at a loss at ASU until 2025 (which is the current projected year for their new NHL-caliber arena).
Scheduling Huge Road Trips
The New York Islanders had to start the year on a massive road trip, as they are in a similar situation, which has ultimately cost them their 2022 season. The Arizona Coyotes won’t be able to play at ASU’s arena until mid-December next year, due to the aforementioned renovation at Arizona State. That leaves the already atrocious Coyotes on a month and a half road trip to start their 2022-2023 season. Good luck.
Gary Bettman Failed Across the Board
This entire mess could have been avoided if Gary Bettman forced Arizona to sell their team after their failure to pay their bills at their current arena. The incompetence of the Arizona Coyotes and Gary Bettman are simply incomprehensible. The Coyotes aren’t even approved for the arena that is projected to be built and move-in ready for only the Coyotes in 2025; and it should financially be a long shot for them to actually get approved, with how much money will be lost in the coming years. There are tons of question marks everywhere with this franchise.
In my opinion the best possible cities to move to include; Houston, Quebec, Kansas City, Madison, Oklahoma City, Indianapolis, and/or Portland.
Let’s see if this colossal failure will result in common sense prevailing, and the NHL forcing Arizona to sell their franchise. Sorry Coyotes fans, you are amazing; however, your management and ownership is a disaster that is not committed to winning. They let you guys down do to a lack of a functioning brain-stem, and Gary Bettman enabled them.
