NHL DFS Tournament Picks and Strategy | Snipes, Grinders, and Hard Passes Projections for Fanduel and Draftkings 2/12/22

DFS NHL is a volatile sport centering around correlation, stacking and game theory.  Learning how to win cash games and tournaments requires nailing those great upside plays/stacks, grabbing obvious value, and making the proper fades that sink everyone else’s ships.  Let’s look through today’s slate and identify those winning picks in “Snipes, Grinders, and Hard Passes!”

All of my plays make sense for the entire DFS industry; however, if there is an egregious discrepancy in player salary between sites, I will mention it in my briefing.

Snipe = Good Play
Grinder = Value Plays (Grinders are Valuable)
Hard-Pass = I’m fading in tournaments

DFS NHL Slate Overview:

Small Saturday night slate before the super bowl, and yes, I am only writing about the night slate; because it’s the main slate. I only write about main slates because that’s where the money is, and we want to make here at the DFS Army. The slate is fairly straight forward with a couple of expensive guys and stacks, which I recommend rostering, which means we will have to find value elsewhere; which is where we win tournaments. Remember, my DM’s are open; but, to Army members only on the discord, so make sure you try out a subscription to get all of the coaches hands on advice and sneaky picks.

Snipes and Hard Passes for Tonight

Correlated Snipe #1

Auston Matthews – Mitch Marner

These two are locked up in Toronto for a long time, and they are their two best players by far; not to be too controversial, but they are two of the top 10 players in the league in my opinion in regards to offensive production. They pair together perfectly and the Leafs go as these two go. Stereotypically Marner is known as the playmaker and Matthews is known as the sniper, and that is typically in general true; but, as of right now, and I am sure Matthews and his coaches have told him this, Mitch Marner is upping his aggression meter and is shooting the puck a lot more than in years prior. I do not see this trend ending anytime soon. They will both get the shots on goal bonus that Draftkings has to offer, and like I said a large chunk of the offensive production comes from these 2. I understand Michael Bunting is a nice and unexpected player to be producing (and that he has a hat trick this year), but I don’t typically see him as a must correlate in this stack. Marner and Matthews will be there to try to score early in this game, they are on the powerplay, and if they need a goal late in the game the killer M’s will be there again. Oh yeah and if they go to overtime, guess who 2 of the 3 players will be out there to go score the game winner? Yep, the M&M duo; ah damn, now I’m hungry. Have you guys had the peanut butter ones, sheesh. Oh yeah, the Canucks don’t scare me, just take the peanut butter M&M boys and figure out the rest of your lineup.

Correlated Snipe #2

Filip Forsberg – Matt Duchene – Mikhail Granlund

Since I spent way too long talking about M&M’s in my last segment; and I stayed up way too late last night playing “Dying Light 2” (holy smokes what a game that is), I am going to keep the logistics of rostering this line sophisticatedly simple. The Predators top line has been together all year long, is their top powerplay unit according to my findings, and Nashville is a tough place to play. The Jets are a confusing and underwhelming team given the talent that they have. Their lackluster play and inconsistency may be on display Saturday as they are on the second game of a back to back, and traveling to Nashville from Dallas; where they fell to the Stars in overtime. Like I said, Nashville is both good and a tough road game for incoming teams, the Jets are limping a bit, and their defense is their weakness.

Hard Pass #1

The Islanders/Flames game

There are some competent players for both teams, but they have both played a lot of games recently coming off the break; and I I both don’t trust the Islanders to produce, or know who is going to score the goals for the Flames. Sure, the Flames top line is talented, but they are appropriately priced, and I probably can’t afford them after taking the delicious M&M line I talked about in the first segment. Plus with the Flames, I never know when Mangiapagne or Coleman are just going to bang in a greasy goal.

NHL Grinder Value Plays

Grinder#1

Brock Boeser – Boeser is simply way too cheap on Draftkings, and does a lot of things for the Canucks including shooting the puck and creating chances. This game between the Canucks and Leafs has the highest potential to be a barn burner in my opinion, and we want as many important pieces of the pie that we can, in order to dominate our opponents.

Grinder#2

Elias Petersson – Literally everything I just said about Boeser applies to Petersson, and for the same team as well. I wish I had more for you, but the Canucks need this kid to produce and put him in situations to succeed if they ever want any chance of winning anything.

Good luck, I hope you all come in 2nd.  😉
