NHL DFS Tournament Picks and Strategy | Snipes, Grinders, and Hard Passes Projections for Fanduel and Draftkings 2/11/22

DFS NHL is a volatile sport centering around correlation, stacking and game theory.  Learning how to win cash games and tournaments requires nailing those great upside plays/stacks, grabbing obvious value, and making the proper fades that sink everyone else’s ships.  Let’s look through today’s slate and identify those winning picks in “Snipes, Grinders, and Hard Passes!”

All of my plays make sense for the entire DFS industry; however, if there is an egregious discrepancy in player salary between sites, I will mention it in my briefing.

Snipe = Good Play
Grinder = Value Plays (Grinders are Valuable)
Hard-Pass = I’m fading in tournaments

DFS NHL Slate Overview:

Small slate here with a later start than normal. The best game player wise probably stems from the Stars/Jets matchup in Dallas; however, the Oilers do play, and Draisaitl/McDavid will always garner monumental ownership. In tournaments it’s hard to say to fade them, because they could put up 40 fantasy points in a game; but, in such a small slate, I believe it is GTO (game theory optimal) to go underweight on Edmonton stacks tonight do to the spike in ownership.

Snipes and Hard Passes for Tonight

Correlated Snipe #1

Ondrej Palat – Brayden Point – Nikita Kucherov

I am going to keep this simple here, because the logic is fairly straight forward. Like I said in the overview, people can’t afford everyone because that is the beauty of DFS; and, with that, Tampa Bay’s top line may go slightly less owned than maybe they should because of all of the casual players simply clicking the McDavid and Draisaitl buttons. Trust me, they’re easy buttons to click. I am simply touting Goliath to smash David here, and even though it isn’t the sexiest pick, I hope you guys understand how I got here. Don’t overthink it, it’s the best team in the NHL vs the second worst team in the NHL; Tampa will score some goals.

Correlated Snipe #2

Trevor Zegras – Adam Henrique – Rikard Rakell

Anaheim is a fun young team fighting for a playoff spot, at home, against a very poorly constructed Seattle Kraken team. Henrique is a responsible 2 way player which allows Zegras to be the flashy caffeinated offensive kid that he is. Zegras has the green light to do whatever he wants, and his confidence just keeps growing and growing. Rakell is an interesting and underrated plyer as well talent wise, and he is in his contract year, and may or may not hit free agency this off-season. With that, he understands the more he produces offensively, the more money he can demand either now or in the offseason. So, Rakell is individually determined, and Anaheim may give him more ice time as the trade deadline comes up, because as a playoff rental at retained salary, Rakell would garner at least a first round pick at the trade deadline. So, he wants to do well and his team wants him to do well to get a better trade value, seems like a good thing, especially being able to play with Trevor Zegras. Oh yeah and Anaheim is playing at home and the Kraken haven’t stopped a puck all year.

Hard Pass #1

The Coyotes

I don’t really have a true fade on such a small slate, but the Coyotes against that Tampa Bay blue line, and potentially Andrei Vasilevskiy is one im willing to have 0-5% of.

NHL Grinder Value Plays

Grinder#1

Oliver Wahlstrom – The Islanders are in Edmonton tonight, so they are going to have to score goals to stay afloat in this contest. Wahlstrom loves to shoot with the ice time he does receive, and he is on the top powerplay unit for the Islanders. Kind of a punt play, but if you need to go down to that price range, Wahlstrom can score a goal at minimal ownership, and shouldn’t be in too many stacked lineups.

Grinder#2

Yanni Gourde – Still a cheap boy. He is on the Kraken’s 2nd line and 2nd powerplay unit. He is a good 2 way player that they trust in every situation, and honestly he is a cash game type of player with the floor he should have.

Good luck, I hope you all come in 2nd.  😉
