All-Star Game Breakdown

Vegas Total: 324

Vegas Spread: Team LeBron James -6.0

Welcome to the NBA All-Star break, hopefully, everyone is able to either take a DFS break or test the water in some other sports like MMA last night or the other variety of CBB, NHL, NASCAR, etc. I’ll start by saying the All-Star game isn’t something that we have a ton of hard data or a great grasp on how things will go due to the fact that some of these guys don’t even want to be here and there is generally very little effort on the defensive end. That said, we did see this change a bit over the last few seasons when they changed up the scoring a bit to honor Kobe Bryant. Instead of the usual time running out, the 4th quarter is now completed by reaching a “target score” that is calculated by adding 24 points (catching the Kobe tribute now?) to the leading team’s score. So, for example, if the score at the end of the 3rd quarter is Team LeBron James 130 to Team Kevin Durant 121, the game will end once one team hits 154 due to adding that 24 points to the leading team’s score. Now that we’ve got the groundwork laid out, we can take a look at each team.

Team LeBron James:

  • Giannis Antetokounmpo
  • LeBron James
  • Steph Curry
  • DeMar DeRozan
  • Nikola Jokic
  • Jarrett Allen
  • Jimmy Butler
  • Luka Doncic
  • Darius Garland
  • James Harden
  • Donovan Mitchell
  • Chris Paul
  • Fred VanVleet

Team Kevin Durant:

  • Kevin Durant
  • Joel Embiid
  • Ja Morant
  • Jayson Tatum
  • Andrew Wiggins
  • Trae Young
  • LaMelo Ball
  • Devin Booker
  • Rudy Gobert
  • Zach LaVine
  • Khris Middleton
  • Dejounte Murray
  • Karl-Anthony Towns
  • Draymond Green

Now we can begin to break down what the heck to do when starting to build a lineup. Generally, it’s the starters who are the guys you want since they will see the most minutes, however, traditional big men are guys I tend to avoid in All-Star games because it just doesn’t fit their style of play. I like targeting those rim-runners or shooters that are out there to put on a show that guys like Rudy Gobert types aren’t really built for. If we start by looking at each team’s starters, LeBron will be captain and lead his team with Giannis Antetokounmpo, Steph Curry, DeMar DeRozan, and Nikola Jokic. Let’s take a look at how these guys faired in last year’s ASG.

  • LeBron James – 13 minutes, 4 points, 4 assists, and 2 rebounds
  • Giannis Antetokounmpo – 19 minutes, 35 points, 3 assists, and 7 rebounds (MVP)
  • Steph Curry – 22 minutes, 28 points, 4 assists, and 4 rebound
  • DeMar DeRozan – DNP
  • Nikola Jokic – 19 minutes – 6 points, 5 assists, and 7 rebounds

A quick look at that and there should be a couple of guys that stand out with Steph Curry and Giannis Antetokounmpo. These are guys that take the All-Star game pretty seriously or at least enough to rack up some stats, but Giannis is out there to put on a show and is always one of my favorite guys in this game. He won MVP in this game last season and will look to continue that here. I don’t know that it’s a given that these will be the five that close the game for team LeBron with guys like Luka Doncic, Chris Paul, and Jimmy Butler as reserves. Paul in particular goes hard in crunch time in these games, so I would expect a good amount of minutes for him in that 4th quarter. He played 31 minutes off of the bench last season, he’ll see a good amount of run, especially being on his buddy’s (LeBron) team. Let’s jump over to Team Durant and see how their starters faired last year.

  • Joel Embiid – DNP
  • Ja Morant – DNP
  • Jayson Tatum – 17 minutes, 21 points, 7, and 4 rebounds
  • Andrew Wiggins – DNP
  • Trae Young – DNP

We have a pretty limited sample size from this team as a lot of them didn’t play in the game last season. One guy we know will be out for blood is Joel Embiid and is probably my favorite option on Team Durant as he looks to continue his MVP campaign with his two competitors in Giannis and Jokic on the other team. Guys like Rudy Gobert and potentially even Karl-Anthony Towns will be guys I look to fade here as I continue to look for those flashy-type players. Below are the odds on favorites for MVP… these should help you complete a lineup

Giannis +450

LeBron James +650

Joel Embiid, Steph Curry +700

Ja Morant +900

Trae Young, Luke Doncic +1100

Nikola Jokic, DeMar DeRozan +1500

Jayson Tatum +2000

Donovan Mitchell, Devin Booker +3500

LaMelo Ball, Chris Paul +4000

Jimmy Butler +4500

Zach LaVine +5000

Karl-Anthony Towns, Darius Garland +5000

Andrew Wiggins +6000

Khris Middleton, Fred VanVleet, Dejounte Murray +8000

Rudy Gobert, Jarrett Allen +10000
