Advice from Geek

I love to debrief with Chop and Geek on my articles as they provide me with an expert insight into the strategies and concepts I am speaking to. This week, Geek noticed how in Semi-Chalk Pt 2 I spoke to entering single entry contests with 1500 contestants or fewer. His point to me was that 1500 is too big for the average player to be successful in building a bankroll night to night. His advice was that we should be more eager and dedicated to playing tournaments that consist of roughly 30-350 entrants.

DFS Tips

Geek made an excellent point, so much in that I reflected on my own growth as a player and development of bankroll management.

My personal reflection…

resulted in the conclusion that I too have seen my most success in smaller tournaments when following the strategy of semi-chalk. Although I  love a big pay out, I try to limit my entries into large field contests to the weekends. Unconsciously, I have developed the habit of spending the week playing small contests with single entries and 3max, which has helped developed my bank roll over the last 3 months. Therefore, geek’s advice of small field tournaments as a means to utilize semi-chalk principles is one which encourages further inquiry among DFS practitioners (thought that last part sounded legit).

Being Coachable

As I was doing my afternoon walk, I was thinking about the advice I was given by Geek, and how excited I was to add his feedback into my next article. Then it hit me, this marks my personal evolution as a person striving to be successful in all that he does. Roughly 4-5 years ago I would have been so in my own feelings from Geek’s feedback that I would not have been able to synthesize the feedback that will ultimately make me a better DFS player. For example, I couldn’t effectively use feedback because I would immediately begin to feel bad for myself. This was because of my ego and lack of ability to be aware of its hindrance on my personal and professional growth.

What Changed?

What humbled me? My wife and my kids, I don’t know when the light bulb went off exactly, but I am grateful that I was able to get over the man in the mirror. This brings us back to my original point of going down memory lane, which is to be coachable!! You will not lose anything by listening to others and considering the feedback they give. However, this requires one to be vulnerable, and that can be scary.

Next Steps

Therefore, if this has sparked a fire, you may consider talking with those you love and telling them you are aware of your lack of humility and that you want to improve it. Tell them that you would like them to try to provide you with constructive feedback and to make you aware if you are becoming defensive instead of listening.

How?

Get a corny, safe word. For example, you start to turn red because your wife is letting you know that you are terrible with the laundry, she says “Pink Flamingo”. This should help alert your brain, and help you to slow down for a minute in order to better receive the feedback.

Be Patient

I gave you 3 action steps:

How to create and use a "safe word" in your relationship - THE NMILL EFFECT

  1. Communicate desire to improve with family

  2. Encourage feedback

  3. Create a corny word

As simple as it sounds, this takes a lot of time and practice to get down. If you screw up, keep trying! Need encouragement? Join a community of friends at the DFSARMY as we are always discoursing with one another throughout the day.

Back to the Contest Entries

Over the course of the next 5-6 days  I  am going to put Geek’s advice to practice. Starting tonight I am going to follow these procedures:

  1. 2 Contests: 1 5$ 1500 entrant GPP and 1 5$ 230 entrant tournament
  2. Refer back to Semi-Chalk/Chalk principles (revisit article 1 for the percentage breakdown on lineup building)
  3. Records Results
  4. Analyze outcomes after 6 days

**Slates will not be played with less than 2 games and larger than 5 games.
