DFS NHL is a volatile sport centering around correlation, stacking and game theory. Learning how to win cash games and tournaments requires nailing those great upside plays/stacks, grabbing obvious value, and making the proper fades that sink everyone else’s ships. Let’s look through today’s slate and identify those winning picks in “Snipes, Grinders, and Hard Passes!”
All of my plays make sense for the entire DFS industry; however, if there is an egregious discrepancy in player salary between sites, I will mention it in my briefing.
Snipe = Good Play
Grinder = Value Plays (Grinders are Valuable)
Hard-Pass = I’m fading in tournaments
DFS NHL Slate Overview:
I am only writing for the regular 7:00pm eastern time slate, even though I know there are day games today; because, typically, I like to write about the main slates where the actual money can be won. There is some big star power going tonight, and I think there is enough value to get whoever you want within reason. Also, yes, someone actually has to win the Coyotes/Sabres game.
Snipes and Hard Passes for Tonight

Correlated Snipe #1
Connor McDavid, Evander Kane, Kailer Yamamoto
The Montreal Canadiens have been an absolute disaster this season after their cup run that they would have never been in if the divisions were normal last year; but, anyway, Montreal is bad and their goalies are somehow even worse. I have a feeling they are going to sell off a lot of their veteran players here soon. The Oilers have been a talented mess this season that have ridden a very hilly roller coaster. With that being said, I will always be willing to bet on potentially the most talented hockey player ever for obvious reasons. To boot, the hottest topic this week has been Evander Kane; and I am not looking at his off ice crap or argue morals with you people. All I am to do and what my job here is, is to tell you that Kane is a very talented hockey player when on the ice, and he is the minimum salary on Draftkings. Kane’s motivation will be off the charts because he is playing for his life, and somehow gets to play with McDavid. Yamamoto is a decent young play as well, so this line against the Habs, sign me up.
Correlated Snipe #2
John Tavares – Mitch Marner – Ilya Mikheyev
It is assumed that the Leafs are jumbling their forward lines to balance out the offense throughout their lineup, which makes the cheaper Tavares and Marner line more appealing to me. Matthews is with Bunting and Kase, and Nylander is trying to add some offense to the third line even though he is still on their top powerplay unit. I am touting the 2nd line for the Leafs here, because I like Tavares and Marner together both even strength and on the powerplay, and Mikheyev is cheap enough to just be there and also kill penalties. Mikheyev brings the speed and hustle to that line. Detroit is on the second game of a back to back, and the Leafs are a top 5 team in the NHL in my opinion, and top 3 offensively personnel wise in my opinion. Look for around 5 goals for the Leafs tonight in Detroit.

Hard Pass #1
The Lightning/Golden Knights game
Nope, not fading the Coyotes and Sabres game, I am fading the game with 2 cup contending teams; because, we are looking at DFS salaries, GTO, and potential game outcomes. The Lightning vs Knights game has the talent, sure, but most players are either too expensive or appropriately priced, and I think there are simply better stackable options with higher upside. Kucherov is still listed as out, which isn’t good for the Lightning, and if Vasilevskiy is playing, then I wouldn’t feel great stacking the Golden Knights. I know on Draftkings Mark Stone is only $4900, but I’m gonna let the field take him, and if he is 20% owned and only shoots 3 pucks for 4.5 fantasy points, then I will just have a nice edge on that 20% of the field.

NHL Grinder Value Plays
Grinder#1
Mikael Backland – This guy is cheap and has 3 points in his last 3 games, as well as 22 shots on goal in those games. Calgary is white hot and playing the skidding Canucks tonight, and with Backland averaging over 7 shots in his last 3 games, I’m willing to bet he will keep his aggressive mindset in this one.
Grinder#2
Martin Necas – Not a must play, but Necas is super talented for his age, and is on both the 2nd line and 2nd powerplay unit for the deadly Carolina Hurricanes. The Devils in no way shape or form scare me away from Hurricanes stacks in tournaments either.
Good luck, I hope you all come in 2nd. 😉
