DFS NHL is a volatile sport centering around correlation, stacking and game theory. Learning how to win cash games and tournaments requires nailing those great upside plays/stacks, grabbing obvious value, and making the proper fades that sink everyone else’s ships. Let’s look through today’s slate and identify those winning picks in “Snipes, Grinders, and Hard Passes!”
Snipe = Good Play
Grinder = Value Plays (Grinders are Valuable)
Hard-Pass = I’m fading in tournaments
DFS NHL Slate Overview:
So, again, we have another big slate of games with Arizona playing a hockey game, and Edmonton playing a hockey game. What does this mean? It means that in cash games you click the McDavid and Draisaitl buttons and then click on the goalie that is playing Arizona. It really is that simple for cash games. Click…..move on.

May 26, 2021; Uniondale, New York, USA; Pittsburgh Penguins center Sidney Crosby (87) celebrates the goal by Pittsburgh Penguins left wing Jake Guentzel (59) (not pictured) against the New York Islanders during the first period in game six of the first round of the 2021 Stanley Cup Playoffs at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Snipes and Hard Passes for Tonight
Correlated Snipe #1
Sidney Crosby $6600DK/$7700FD
Jake Guentzel $6000DK/$7200FD
Bryan Rust $5300DK/$6200FD
As a CBJ fan, this makes me vomit everywhere; as a hockey analyst, I have to put bias aside and look at the situation and players. At home against the Sabres is a spot that cannot be overstated. Also, look at those prices on DK. This is more of a hunch stack for me, because even though they aren’t playing their best and buzzing around right now, these 3 players have been playing NHL hockey together for a very long time. Crosby’s ownership may dip because he hasn’t been shooting the puck and has been a minus player for a few games in a row now. With that being said, is that going to happen forever, to someone like Sidney Crosby? Nope, I don’t see it, and I am gambling that they get it right in a big way. Letang can be added to this stack, but it would make it so your secondary stack is cheaper, and that is a decision for you to make.
Snipe #2
Mario Ferraro $4200DK/$4500FD
A random defenseman is my second snipe, which is rare; however, he is probably the only current defenseman to get to the blocked shot bonus on DK in 8 straight games. Dude is on the cheaper side with a high floor, and people may overlook him. Simple enough, right? Again…..click and move on.

Correlated Snipe #3
Johnathan Marchessault $5700DK/$6500FD
Reilly Smith $4800DK/$4900FD
These guys are hot and you can check out our NHL Research Station to see just how hot. These types of high ceiling cheap guys are the type of mini-correlations that can help you climb leaderboards. They also allow you to spend up elsewhere whether that is an expensive stack or a superstar one-off. People may also hesitate since Carolina is one of the best teams in the league with a hot goalie. I’m gambling on the Vegas top line at home more often than not.
Hard Pass #1
The entire Coyotes vs Blues game.
This includes all goalies and position players. The Blues goalie will have a low ceiling, and I sound like a broken record saying that. The Blues forwards may be owned because they are playing the AHL affiliate of the ASU Sundevils, because that makes sense. I will not be rostering any Blues, because other than Jordan Kyrou, I have no idea where the production is going to come from, they have a lot of players that can score, and I am not a big fan of guessing. Also, you don’t want to be stacking St Louis when Arizona wins their 2nd and only game of the year; you’d hate to see it. If a Yotes vomit stack beats me, oh well, turn the page.
Hard Pass #2
Alex Ovechkin
Auston Matthews
I am not taking anyone over McDavid or Draisaitl at the same price, how simple is that? In what alternate universe does that make sense? Maybe this one, but I’m taking the first and second best players in the league that play a bunch together.
NHL Grinder Value Plays
Grinder #1 Jamie Benn $3700DK- when will he right the ship?
Grinder #2 Trevor Zegras $4400DK- way too much upside here.
Grinder #3 Kevin Hayes $3900DK- Big driving force player that is just getting back. Chip on his shoulder.
Grinder #4 Sean Monahan $3500DK- Fast-paced matchup, when will his price creep up?
Grinder #5 Brady Skjei $2700DK- cheap D; a lot of activity and pace potential in Vegas.
Good luck, I hope you all come in 2nd. 😉
