Boston Celtics @ Detroit Pistons

Vegas Total: 213.5

Vegas Spread: Bos -8.5

We start the day off with an island game, this is the lone early game so if you want some action you’ll have to play some showdown! We just saw this matchup a few days ago so we have some game flow to work off of. We’ll kick things off with the Boston Celtics who come in as 8.5 against the Pistons. Jayson Tatum bounced back last time out and played 37 minutes in a game that the Celtics actually lost, I don’t expect them to lose this one so these minutes may be high, but he’s in play regardless. Jaylen Brown continues to look like a stud, he has back to back games with at least 47 DraftKings points, I’m willing to keep riding the hot streak. Marcus Smart has been really consistent lately, going for at least 31 DraftKings points in his last three games, I don’t mind going to him as a secondary play here. Tristan Thompson played 26 minutes last game and is the big you’ll want from Boston. From the Pistons, it sounds like Blake Griffin is questionable here but I’m not really expecting him to play, with him out Josh Jackson drew the start last game, he’s back in play for me again if that’s the case here. Even in a tough matchup tonight I like him. Jerami Grant has proved me wrong this season, he’s playing massive minutes and playing well in them. He’s now the highest price Piston, as he should be. I would expect him to see another 35+ minutes here. Mason Plumlee had a nice bounce-back game last time out, he fell two points short of the double-double bonus which would’ve given him a massive day, I like going right back to him. Lastly, Derrick Rose is a usage monster, I wish he saw minutes in the 30’s more consistently but he’s in play for GPPs.

5-star play: Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Jerami Grant, Josh Jackson

4-star play: Mason Plumlee, Marcus Smart, Derrick Rose

Deeper Value: Sekou Doumbouya

GPP Sleeper: Sekou Doumbouya, Derrick Rose

Main Slate:

Washington Wizards @ Brooklyn Nets

Vegas Total: 240.5

Vegas Spread: Bkn -8.0

On to the main slate! We’ll kick it off with a game that has a huge implied total. The Wizards and Nets are both going to be defenses I target throughout the year because, well, neither of them plays any defense. Starting with the Wizards, Russell Westbrook should be back here, and anytime he plays against Kevin Durant I’ll have some interest. He’s the type of guy that takes games like this seriously, and his usage combined with production this season is something I want to get on before he’s $11k. Bradley Beal continues to put up 40 point fantasy outings, you can make a strong case for him here in a good matchup. Thomas Bryant is a fine play I just wish he were a little cheaper, more of a GPP guy with Westbrook back in there. There’s a log jam at the F position for this team with Deni Avdija, Rui Hachimura, and Davis Bertans. Avdija is getting the more consistent minute so if I’m picking one of them on this slate he’s probably the guy. From the Nets, Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving are both in play yet again. Kevin Durant is still underpriced, he showed off what upside he can provide a few games ago going for 63 fantasy points, I’ll go right back to him here, and I’ll get a lot of him as it stands right now. Outside of them there really isn’t anyone else I love here, I guess you can make a case for DeAndre Jordan and Caris LeVert, maybe Joe Harris, in tournaments due to the total, but nobody I want to go too heavy on.

5-star play: Russell Westbrook, Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving

4-star play: Bradley Beal, Joe Harris, Caris LeVert

Deeper Value: None

GPP Sleeper: Deni Avdija, Thomas Bryant, Caris LeVert

Los Angeles Lakers @ Memphis Grizzlies

Vegas Total: 220.5

Vegas Spread: Lal -9.0

Starting with the Lakers, Anthony Davis sounds like he’ll be good to go here but tell me if you’ve heard this before… LeBron James comes in as questionable. This will likely be the case for the Lakers for most of the season. I’ll operate as if they’re both in for now. However, keep an eye on the news from the Lakers and jump in our VIP coaching forums for updates and breakdowns on who they impact most. They’re both elite plays should they end up playing. The only other guy I would have interest in is Dennis Schroder, as the Grizzlies tend to run pretty quick. From the Grizzlies, this Grizzlies backcourt is about to get a bit messier now that De’Anthony Melton is off the injury report. Tyus Jones and Desmond Bane were eating up the guard minutes but now that Melton is in there we’ll have to watch how these rotations play out.  Jonas Valanciunas has been pretty consistent as of late but this is a tough matchup against the Lakers, he’s more of a GPP option than anything. Dillon Brooks looks great right now, he has at least 29 DraftKings points in four of his first five games this year and with Ja off the court his usage and shot quantity will go up, he’s a great play in a nice matchup. Kyle Anderson continues to play well, and I just might have to eat some crow on him and play him… I hate playing him I don’t think he’s a great basketball player but he’s scored at least 40 DraftKings points in three of the past four games.

5-star play: LeBron James, Anthony Davis

4-star play: Dennis Schroder, Jonas Valanciunas

Deeper Value: None

GPP Sleeper: Dennis Schroder, Kyle Anderson, Dillon Brooks

Denver Nuggets @ Minnesota Timberwolves

Vegas Total: 226

Vegas Spread: Den -8.5

Starting with the Nuggets, Michael Porter Jr. will be out for this game which frees up more usage in this offense. We saw Jamal Murray and Nikola Jokic have big games last time out and are great plays again in this one in a great matchup against a bad defense. Will Barton saw 36 minutes last game with Porter out, I’m willing to go right back to him here in the mid-range, he’s shown a big upside in his career. Gary Harris saw big minutes as well but is just less productive on a per-minute basis. Lastly, you can make a case for Paul Millsap, but he’s just kind of meh for me. From the Wolves, Karl-Anthony Towns will continue to be out here. Naz Reid saw a minute increase last game going up to 24, which is less than I’d like to see but he was still able to put up 31.5 DraftKings points. It’s a tough matchup for him, but you can make a case for GPPs due to opportunity. D’Angelo Russell’s looked baaaaaad last game, but we know he can be volatile. With Towns off the court, last season Russell saw a 29.7% usage rate and just about a fantasy point per minute. I really don’t love anyone else on this team, you can make a case in GPPs for guys like Malik Beasley, Ricky Rubio, and Anthony Edwards but that’s about it.

5-star play: Nikola Jokic, Jamal Murray

4-star play: D’Angelo Russell, Naz Reid

Deeper Value: None

GPP Sleeper: Malik Beasley, Will Barton, Paul Millsap, Ricky Rubio

Utah Jazz @ San Antonio Spurs

Vegas Total: 220

Vegas Spread: Utah -4.0

Starting with the Jazz, Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert are pretty similar options, however, I like the matchup much more for Donovan Mitchell however, as I continue to play point guards against the Spurs. Mike Conley is in the same boat and has looked good this season, those are my two favorite guys on this team today. Bojan Bogdanovic just cannot find his shot this season, at this price I’m going to have to see it before I go to him again Lastly, Jordan Clarkson and Royce O’Neale both make sense as GPP options and I like O’Neale as a value play due to the minutes he’s getting. From the Spurs, I absolutely love DeMar DeRozan’s price did go up but I don’t think it went up enough, he has at least 41 DraftKings points in four of his first five games. That said, it’s probably the most difficult matchup he’s had this season. Dejounte Murray didn’t really see his minutes impacted with Derrick White last game. White was on a minute restriction but I think the Spurs are pot-committed to Murray at this point, and he’s a nice play for GPPs due to his upside. That being said, White will be out here which will open up Lonnie Walker as a play again. LaMarcus Aldridge is questionable for this one after missing the last game, Jakob Poeltl would get the start if he’s forced to miss, but I won’t have much interest there.

5-star play: Donovan Mitchell, Mike Conley

4-star play: Rudy Gobert, DeMar DeRozan

Deeper Value: Royce O’Neale, Lonnie Walker

GPP Sleeper: Jordan Clarkson, Bojan Bogdanovic, Dejounte Murray

Dallas Mavericks @ Chicago Bulls

Vegas Total: 224.5

Vegas Spread: Dal -6.0

Starting with the Mavericks, Luka Doncic comes in as questionable here so keep an eye on his status. For the sake of this article, I’ll operate under the assumption that he plays, if this changes, jump into our VIP chat for who is impacted most! Doncic bounced back last time out with 58.75 DraftKings points, this is an elite matchup for him and one of the better raw plays on the slate. Josh Richardson and Tim Hardaway Jr. are fine GPP options but not guys I’ll probably get much of at all. Lastly, Maxi Kleber is questionable here, if he misses it could vault Dwight Powell into additional minutes, and would be a guy I like at just $4k. From the Bulls, Lauri Markkanen and Tomas Satoransky are out tonight due to Covid protocols. We saw Otto Porter start for Markkanen but only saw 22 minutes last game. Now, this game did blowout against the Bucks, so we have to take that into consideration. Both Zach LaVine and Coby White had down games last time out but I’ll chalk that up to the blowout as well, you can go right back to them as well. Lastly, Wendell Carter is a guy I can never get right but he’s in play for GPPs in a good matchup against a weak Mavs frontcourt.

5-star play: Luka Doncic

4-star play: Zach LaVine, Coby White, Otto Porter

Deeper Value: None

GPP Sleeper: Josh Richardson, Tim Hardaway, Wendell Carter

Los Angeles Clippers @ Phoenix Suns

Vegas Total: 216.5

Vegas Spread: Lac -3.5

Starting with the Clippers, Kawhi Leonard has looked pretty good coming back from his mouth injury. He has at least 51 DraftKings points in two straight games and is still under $10k on DraftKings in a good matchup. Paul George is in the same boat, scoring at least 50 DraftKings points in two straight games. That said, I don’t hate jumping off here. Serge Ibaka has at least 30 DraftKings points in two of his last three games, the one game he didn’t was where he saw 34 minutes… so he’s a bit volatile, but a nice GPP play nonetheless. Lou Williams has looked good in back to back games now but he’s in a similar boat as Ibaka where the minutes just aren’t there to a point where I wouldn’t feel great about playing him. Nic Batum should continue to start with Marcus Morris out, he’s looked pretty good and can be played as a low-end guy in this price range. From the Suns,  Devin Booker has seen his price come way down, as it should, he’s been held under 40 DraftKings points in every game this season. I think you can get to him here at under $8k, more of a GPP guy, but he’s playable at this price. It’s a tough matchup with Kawhi and George on defense, but he’s shown upside before. DeAndre Ayton gets the best matchup on this team and coming off a nice game so I like him in all formats here. Honestly, outside of Booker for GPPs, and Ayton there isn’t much on this team I like. They’re still figuring things out with Paul at point guard who has been up and down in his own right as well. The guy I would have the most interest in for cash games is Mikal Bridges, but even that is a reach.

5-star play: Kawhi Leonard

4-star play: Paul George, Serge Ibaka, DeAndre Ayton

Deeper Value: None

GPP Sleeper: Nic Batum, Serge Ibaka, Lou Williams, Devin Booker

Portland Trailblazers @ Golden State Warriors

Vegas Total: 235

Vegas Spread: Por -5.5

We just saw this game a few days ago so we have a bit of an idea of what to expect. Starting with the Blazers, CJ McCollum continues to play well but that price tag is too high for my liking even in a good matchup against the Warriors. Damian Lillard is a guy I like here, this game has a big implied total and shouldn’t have much defense. A Lillard/Curry shoutout would be a fun GPP stack for a late-night hammer. Lillard looked great last time out and is a guy I like going right back to here at under $10k.  Jusuf Nurkic had a down game last time out but should be able to do whatever he wants in this one, he’s more of a GPP guy. Carmelo Anthony has looked great in his first few games this year, he’s underpriced here and makes sense as a value option while guys like Robert Covington and Derrick Jones Jr. are GPP guys. From the Warriors, Steph Curry has looked great this season and would be my preferred point guard in this game but as I mentioned if you want to pair these two in GPPs and hope it turns into a shootout, I like it. Andrew Wiggins has looked great over the last two games, I don’t hate riding the hot streak here in a great matchup. Draymond Green played just 18 minutes in his debut last game, so he’s a fade until he gets up to full minutes. James Wiseman has had back to back stinkers and has been in foul trouble, a matchup with Nurkic isn’t going to be friendly, he’s more of a fade as well.

5-star play: Damian Lillard, Steph Curry

4-star play: CJ McCollum, Jusuf Nurkic, Carmelo Anthony, Andrew Wiggins

Deeper Value: Derrick Jones Jr., Carmelo Anthony

GPP Sleeper: CJ McCollum, Kelly Oubre, Jusuf Nurkic

NBA Lock of the Day: Will Barton (DK – $5.4k; FD – $5.0k)

Clint Capela crushed it as the lock yesterday so looking to stay hot here! Will Barton is actually a guy that you can get a lot of on both sites due to the pricing. With Michael Porter Jr. out Barton saw 36 minutes last time out against the Suns. He had a bad shooting game where he went 1-7 from the field which is why he didn’t do so well, but his price went down, and gets an even better matchup against a poor Wolves defense. Barton saw close to a fantasy point per minute with Porter off the court last season and we know the upside that he can provide. The Research Station has him projected for 31.72 DraftKings points which puts him at 5.87x his price tag, I’ll be getting a lot of him here at the moment. That said, I do expect some value to open up as the day progresses, so this pick may change, if so come jump in that VIP forum and see who I’ve got it updated to before lock! Tweet me (@MadnessDFS) your lock predictions and if your player gets over 5x tonight I’ll give you a shoutout on Twitter, let’s have some fun with this!
