Early Slate:

Cleveland Cavaliers @ Indiana Pacers

Vegas Total: 216.0

Vegas Spread: Ind -7.0

Happy New Year’s Eve to everyone! We kick the day off with a short little two-game slate, with this being game one. We’ll start with the Cavaliers, it sounds like Kevin Love is going to be out awhile so we can immediately give a boost to guys like Larry Nance and Cedi Osman, but we’ll get to them later. Andre Drummond is another guy that will get a bit of a boost with Love out. He is someone I like getting to more often than not. This isn’t a great matchup against a stingy Pacers team, but he has at least 57 DraftKings points in three straight games and is still under $9k. Darius Garland is playing some good basketball so far, he has at least 37 DraftKings points in three of his first four games, he just might be a legit weapon on this team. Larry Nance is going to see heavy minutes now that Love is out but I prefer him in faster-paced matchups, that said, he’s probably too cheap here. Collin Sexton and Cedi Osman round out this team as GPP plays for me. From the Pacers, Domantas Sabonis continues to play well, dropping 46 DraftKings points in three of his first four games. You can attack Cleveland with big men even with Drummond down on the block, this is another nice spot for him. Myles Turner is in a similar spot, but we kind of know what we’re getting with him, if he gets hot from three he’ll have a solid night. Malcolm Brogdon is right there with Sabonis as one of the more consistent options on this team. He’s going to see heavy minutes and in a great matchup, it’s hard to ignore him on a short slate. Victor Oladipo looks actually pretty good this season but is taking away usage from the rest of these guys. That said, on a two-game slate in a good matchup, I like him here. TJ Warren will be out for this game, opening up usage for these other starters, here’s how they play out:

  • Domantas Sabonis – 31.4% usage rate; 1.53 fpm
  • Malcolm Brogdon – 23.1% usage rate; 1.17 fpm
  • Victor Oladipo – 22.6% usage rate; 1.16 fpm

All these guys are great options here, I don’t think there’s a bench guy that will come and start for him that would jump off the page to me. It will be a combination of Justin Holiday and Doug McDermott.

5-star play: Andre Drummond, Domantas Sabonis, Malcolm Brogdon

4-star play: Darius Garland, Larry Nance, Collin Sexton, Victor Oladipo

Deeper Value: Justin Holiday

GPP Sleeper: Collin Sexton, Cedi Osman, Myles Turner

Chicago Bulls @ Washington Wizards

Vegas Total: 234.5

Vegas Spread: Was -5.5

We just saw this game a few nights ago and it actually went under the implied total at 222. That said, neither of these teams play much defense, it’s my preferred game on this two gamer. Starting with the Bulls, Zach LaVine is bouncing back a bit after a slow start, he played a ton of minutes last time out and scored 46 DraftKings points. Colby White saw his price go down a couple hundred dollars and in a fast-paced game like this one, he’s going to be a guy I like here. Lauri Markkanen is currently questionable, so keep an eye on him. If he’s out, check out our VIP coaching forum where we will breakdown who benefits most. Otto Porter just isn’t getting enough minutes for me to want to play him, he would get a boost if Markkanen is forced to miss. Lastly, Wendell Carter finally saw his price come up, he’s looked good over his past two games and is a good option on a short slate. From the Wizards, Russell Westbrook continues his strong start as he has at least 57 DraftKings points in each game this season and is under $10k still, I’m going to continue to go back to the well. He’s going to have a big season with this team. Bradley Beal isn’t a guy I really love here, he’s priced way up but has been playing well. I just don’t know how sustainable his usage is with Westbrook now on his team. Thomas Bryant’s price came down, but not enough to where I’d want to go with him, Westbrook tends to steal rebounds from the bigs on his. Davis Bertans looked good last time out and got a season-high 26 minutes, he’s a solid GPP option on a short slate.

5-star play: Zach LaVine, Russell Westbrook

4-star play: Bradley Beal, Colby White

Deeper Value: None

GPP Sleeper: Lauri Markkanen, Wendell Carter, Bradley Beal, Thomas Bryant

Main Slate:

Philadelphia 76ers @ Orlando Magic

Vegas Total: 216.5

Vegas Spread: Phi -2.5

Starting with the Sixers, Joel Embiid comes into this game as probable so he should be good to go here. It’s not the greatest matchup, but it’s also not the worst. He’s coming off a massive 62 point fantasy night last time out and is a solid option here. Ben Simmons seems priced about right here and has been consistent this season. He hasn’t really been consistently great, but good enough where you can consider him for cash games. We just haven’t seen the ceiling to pay off the price tag.  Tobias Harris has kicked it up a notch after a slow start, he’s coming off a 50 burger last time out and gets a bit of a revenge game here, I like him at this price tag. Seth Curry has played well and is getting good run, he fits well on this team but probably needs to shoot well to get there each night. From the Magic, I like getting some Nikola Vucevic here, Embiid defense doesn’t scare me and he has at least 52 DraftKings points in two of his last three games. Terrence Ross always makes sense for GPPs, he’s a nice raw scorer off the bench. Lastly, Markelle Fultz continues to play well and is a consistent cash option. Evan Fournier and Aaron Gordon just aren’t getting there yet this season for me to have interest.

5-star play: Joel Embiid, Nikola Vucevic

4-star play: Ben Simmons, Tobias Harris, Markelle Fultz

Deeper Value: None

GPP Sleeper: Seth Curry, Terrence Ross

Sacramento Kings @ Houston Rockets

Vegas Total: 229

Vegas Spread: Hou -4.5

Starting with the Kings, De’Aaron Fox should see around a 30% usage rate this season with Bogdanovic now gone. I like the matchup as well with the Rockets not giving a damn about defense as long as drama queen James Harden is still there. Buddy Hield is always in play in GPPs for me due to his upside but the price tag just is too high for me here. Harrison Barnes, Nemanja Bjelica, and Marvin Bagley feel really similar here, they’re more of secondary GPP options here than anything. Lastly, Tyrese Haliburton looked great last game, if he can get a few more minutes per game he’s going to be a great option. I like him here at this price tag in this matchup. From the Rockets, John Wall, Eric Gordon, and DeMarcus Cousins will make their season debuts here after coming back from quarantine. This should kill some of James Harden’s usage, obviously not all of it, but his price tag makes you at least think twice about it now. Christian Wood should continue to see big minutes even with Cousins in there, I like this matchup for him. I would think Wall and Cousins should see good minutes as well, as they made it through the preseason with some good minutes, they both have nice price tags. I’ve got a couple of guy’s in this game that make my Core 4, check out the full article below!

-> Madness’s DraftKings Core 4 <-

5-star play: James Harden

4-star play: De’Aaron Fox, John Wall, Christian Wood, DeMarcus Cousins

Deeper Value: Tyrese Haliburton

GPP Sleeper: Buddy Hield, De’Aaron Fox

New York Knicks @ Toronto Raptors

Vegas Total: 217.0

Vegas Spread: Tor -8.5

Starting with the Knicks, the pricing on Julius Randle continues to rise, but so does his production. He has back to back games with at least 60 DraftKings points. He’s playing 35+ minutes per game and is just a guy I’m going to continue to get to. With Ibaka and Gasol out of town for the Raptors, their defense hasn’t looked as good as last year, particularly in the frontcourt. I don’t love the price on RJ Barrett, but he’s going to be right there with Randle racking up minutes this season, it’s a nice matchup for him, so you can make a case for GPPs. Alec Burks is questionable here, if he’s out again I’ll go right back to Elfrid Payton who saw 36 minutes on his way to 33 DraftKings points last time out. He’s a guy that we’ve seen have triple-double upside in the past. From the Raptors, I like the spot more than I like the price on Pascal Siakam here. I still have nightmares from his bubble games, but I’ll get to some here at the very least. Kyle Lowry and Fred VanVleet are pretty similar plays here, they’re both getting big minutes and they’re priced very similarly. Lowry had the big game last time out but they’re both solid options. Lastly, I don’t hate Aron Baynes in that price range if you need a cheaper center option.

5-star play: Julius Randle

4-star play: RJ Barrett, Elfrid Payton, Kyle Lowry, Fred VanVleet, OG Anunoby

Deeper Value: None

GPP Sleeper: Aron Baynes, Pascal Siakam

New Orleans Pelicans @ Oklahoma City Thunder

Vegas Total: 214.5

Vegas Spread: No -4.5

Starting with the Pelicans, Brandon Ingram and Zion Williamson are priced similarly here and in a good matchup, they’re both solid options. Lonzo Ball was bad last game, his minutes were cut but that was due to a blowout, I like jumping back on him here especially if ownership is down on him. I don’t want to fall into the Eric Bledsoe trap again but the price is juicy… he should continue to see big minutes here. I get it if you don’t want to go back to him after two games.. but it was just two games, I like getting him here. From the Thunder, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is someone I’m going to get a lot of this season, he’s scored at least 30.75 DraftKings points in each game this season. The Pels actually play decent defense against guards, but I like him here. The only other guys I would have interest in here are Al Horford and Darius Bazley, both are GPP guys for me.

5-star play: Brandon Ingram, Zion Williamson, Shai-Gilgeous Alexander

4-star play: Al Horford, Darius Bazley, Eric Bledsoe

Deeper Value: None

GPP Sleeper: Eric Bledsoe, Al Horford, Darius Bazley

Phoenix Suns @ Utah Jazz

Vegas Total: 218.5

Vegas Spread: Utah -3.5

Starting with the Suns, Devin Booker seems to be impacted by Chris Paul as he hasn’t put up anything over 40 DraftKings points yet this season. I’m going to wait for his price to come down a bit especially in this matchup. Speaking of Chris Paul, his minutes are a bit all over the place but I don’t hate getting to him. DeAndre Ayton is a guy that has an upside but hasn’t flashed it yet this season, he’s more of a GPP option on this slate, the same can be said for Mikal Bridges who has looked great this season. From the Jazz, Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert are pretty similar options, it’s a nice matchup so I don’t mind getting to them here. Mike Conley is coming off a 50 burner last time out after I said he didn’t have much upside… he showed me! I like going right back to well on him. Bojan Bogdanovic finally had a decent shooting performance which led him to a nice day. As long as he shoots well, he’s going to produce. Lastly, Jordan Clarkson and Royce O’Neale both make sense as GPP options and I like O’Neale as a value play due to the minutes he’s getting.

5-star play: None

4-star play: Chris Paul, Donovan Mitchell, Rudy Gobert, Mike Conley, Bojan Bogdanovic

Deeper Value: Royce O’Neale

GPP Sleeper: DeAndre Ayton, Devin Booker, Jordan Clarkson

NBA Lock of the Day: De’Aaron Fox (DK – $7.8k; FD – $7.9k)

The pricing on DraftKings is really pretty good today, it doesn’t feel like anyone is massively underpriced which would ultimately lead to some chalk, but it looks good. I’m going to go to Sacramento and get me some De’Aaron Fox in this one. This is matchup based for me, with John Wall expected back for Houston I expect them to move up and down the floor a bit more and speed this one up. This would play right into Fox’s hand who likes to play fast and run and gun a bit. The Research Station has him projected for 40.18 DraftKings points which comes out to 5.15x his price tag. Tweet me (@MadnessDFS) your lock predictions and if your player gets over 5x tonight I’ll give you a shoutout on Twitter, let’s have some fun with this!
