The Turn for Home - DFS Horse Racing on Fanduel 4/9

Welcome to rebel DFS! We are all tired of staring at the same 4 walls and hopefully the alcohol rations haven’t run out. Today’s installment is the Fanduel DFS Horse Racing slate. We are back for another day of the hottest new DFS contest based off live action. I can’t wait to see what today brings.

Before we get into the slate lets cover a few basics. The slate consists of 10 races at Gulfstream Park. After yesterday, these horses will leave you scratching your head. We want to pick as many horses that will finish in the top 4 of each race, although ideally win. A few terms to cover that I might use are:

  • Beyer Speed – Relative speed of the horse for the race, track, and vs other horses.

  • Win – self-explanatory.

  • Place – 2nd

  • Show – 3rd

  • Underneath – finishing in 3rd or 4

  • Bounce – couple different ways this could go but the most common is that it ran too fast and had too hard a race the previous time out that it cannot return anything close to a normal ride this time out. I’ll explain other scenarios when I see them or in slack, if you like.

  • Inside post – posts 1 to 3

  • Middle post – posts 4 to 7

  • Outside post – posts 8 or higher

Anything else will be explained on the fly. I will make recommendations for each race but you are free to deviate as you see fit.

Andddd we’re off!

Race 1

This is a packed race going 1 mile on the turf. For this type of race at this track, we are looking for a horse that likes to run late coming from the inside or middle of the starting gate. Typical winning beyer are about 74. This is a tough race to call as I don’t see a best-fit horse.

  • (3) Jack Beanstalk (6/1) – this horse has the position and it probably has the speed, going by the numbers, but looking at its history it doesn’t look like a lock. I think this is the next best horse in a suspect group. ⭐⭐

  • (4) Traffic Trouble (9/2) – my favorite horse of the bunch but it’s a low bar to be honest. If I can help it I would probably not want to spend 3 bucks on this race but I feel like this horse should hit the board.  ⭐⭐1/2

Race 2

This 1 mile trip on the dirt should generally benefit horses who like to run early. Ideally, we are looking at post positions from the rail or the outside. Typical winning beyer speed figures are about 81. This seems like a 2-horse race to me.

  • (2) She Love Me (5/2) – this horse is dropping in class but doing so suspiciously. Normally, this makes me want to avoid them, but I dont have faith in the rest of the field. I have more faith in the 5 horse. ⭐⭐

  • (5) Steadily (6/1) – if you’re still saving those dollars, then this is the horse for you. This horse also drops in class. The late speed is there to take advantage of slippage from other horses. I like it to perform well today. ⭐⭐⭐1/2

Race 3

We’re running 1 mile on the dirt. A late running style should do just fine with this race. Ideally, we want a horse in the inside or middle posts. We also want to see roughly a 75 beyer speed. This race is up for debate after 1st and getting points here will go a good way towards a high finish in this contest if saving money on the favorite. I wish I had a good feeling on who.

  • (4) Mayito (3/1) – this horse looks like it checks the boxes. It should hang back and work behind the pace and look to move on them late. This horse also gets the same jockey who rides Dizzy Sight in the previous race. This is another great spot for him.⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • (15) Cuy (8/1) – this horse is kinda a fit for this race but will have a long run. It’s best hope is to try to work forward just a little bit and then settle into the pack to save what it can for the stretch. If they run well, an underneath finish could be in the cards. ⭐⭐

Race 4

Race 4 is a 5.5 furlong trip on the dirt. A 81 beyer has usually been necessary to take it down. The edge will be given to the early runners. The race has seen the bulk of the winner’s come from the middle (inside positions in play too) post positions. My favorite plays are:

  • (7) Reiterate (5/2) – looks like this horse gets Gaffalione riding him, so expect high ownership here. It’s a good horse for the race but not a slam dunk. I’ll probably leverage the field and go elsewhere this race. ⭐⭐⭐

  • (2) One Hot Drama (6/1) – plenty of speed up top and the horse is starting to show better late speed. Somewhat of a value here.⭐⭐⭐

  • (3) Dancing Destroyer (7/2) – I like this horse to bounce back after the last race. It’s a good sprinter and history suggests the last race was an off day. It also has a good history on dirt. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Race 5

This race will take us 1 mile on the turf. I am looking to the inside and middle horses to have the edge. This race has also seen an advantage to the early runners. Average winning beyer is 75.

  • (7) Dr. Doyle (6/1) – this is my preferred horse for this race. It has very good speed and its dropping in class. Win contender. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • (4) Fork Union (8/1) – the pedigree interests me. The horse is young in terms of racing so there is improvement available. Finishing in the money is very possible. ⭐⭐⭐

Race 6

We are back on the dirt going 6 furlongs. Early runners have had success, especially coming from the inside and middle post positions. The race typically has a good pace, with the winner gaining an 85 beyer.

  • (5) Three Deep (3/1) – this horse has shown good progress, improving on it’s beyer the last couple trips. It doesn’t have the top speed this race but it has better speed longer and I could see it catching the pacers down the stretch, or at least make it interesting. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • (8) Unprecedented (8/1) – this horse is in line to improve, if all goes right. This horse likes the front but as long as it can just try to not fall too far back early it could give quiet company a run down the stretch. It has good speed and it might be a little faster down the stretch. I think 2nd is the upside but hitting the board is a good bet. ⭐⭐⭐

Race 7

We’re going 1 mile on the turf. The late running horses have success. This race tends to have an inside or mid-post bias. We are looking for a moderate pace with a beyer speed of 83.

  • (3) Frank First (8/1) – this horse has never raced on the grass but the breeding says it might like it. Normally, I stay away from these situations because surface matters to some horses and this horse has shown some success on dirt. I think there is optimism surrounding this horse and it looks as though the other horses can’t come close to it’s kick down the stretch. I’ll be surprised if this horse isn’t the favorite come post time. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • (6) King of Ranch (7/2) – this horse is labelled as an early runner but I think it’s been running differently the past few races. It’s been more even and that has afforded it a decent amount of speed down the stretch.⭐⭐⭐

Race 8

We are still running a mile on the turf. We still want the same attributes as the 7 race. An 79 beyer or better is what we desire, so a slightly slower pace.

  • (4) Spinning Kitten (10/1) – positives: good speed and dropping in class. Negatives: the jockey isn’t good. This has a 3rd place finish at best when all things are considered. The horse, itself, is in an advantageous spot vs the field. It’s up to the jockey to not mess it up.  ⭐⭐

  • (5) Volubile (7/2) – this horse is the rightful favorite. Volubile consistently runs pretty big numbers for this race. It’s dropping in class and has the right style for this race.  There are 14 horses in this race, so the one thing we have to worry about is it getting bottled up. If Gaffalione can find the room, I see no way this horse doesn’t find the board. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • (9) Uncle Curly (12/1) – this horse already has really good speed but the trainer felt it needed extra focus. Uncle Curly will be sporting blinkers as it drops in class. This could be a nice get-right spot for the horse and it gets us off the chalk. Really wish it were a $1 horse, though. I do think it has the chops to win if it can get a good trip. ⭐⭐⭐

Race 9

A 92 beyer is desired for the 1-1/16 mile trip on the dirt. We want a speed or early running horse here and they typically start on the inside or in the middle.

  • (5) Admire (6/1) – this horse is gonna be a problem for this field if it can get anywhere close to what it did last race. The upside is a victory but i think, more likely, it doesnt quite realize that upside. Only 9 horses so it should find room to maneuver. ⭐⭐⭐

  • (9) Gran Omero (8/1) – this horse likes running longer races. To date, it’s best races have come at this distance or longer. It has wins at a mile and up to 1.5 miles. I am not too worried about the post because GO doesn’t want the lead. I like this horse to finish high. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • (7) Blewitt (20/1) – im putting this horse in because its a dollar and I like having speculative dollar plays somewhere. This horse has not been good recently, having low numbers the last two races. It does have ability and at 6 years old and only 9 races, should have something still in the tank. It’s got a dream team at the wheel and could make some noise. I’m not expecting victory but why couldn’t it come in underneath? ⭐

Race 10

An 79 beyer is desired for the 1 mile trip on the turf. We want a late-running horse from the inside or middle. In this race, there are a lot of first time starters or horses that haven’t raced at this long a distance before. It’s a lot to ask a horse to perform well against horses that are seasoned at route races while going 2 turns. There are a lot of horses I am eliminating from the start. My favorites of whats left are:

  • (8) Act Like Artie (9/2) – this horse ran 3rd vs similar horses last time out but got squeezed late and came in 6th by a couple lengths. If it can avoid that late again, we could see this horse challenge the lead as it is capable down the stretch.  ⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • (4) Capable (12/1) – the name is apt because that is about how I feel about its chances on hitting the board. It has raced at this distance and the numbers are ok but I guess I feel better than others. I’m using Act Like Artie. ⭐⭐
