Welcome to the DFS Army NBA Free Squares article, where I will try to break down my favorite NBA Free Squares and Fanduel and Draftkings for Today’s NBA slate.
So what is a Free Square exactly? In DFS we define the Free Square as a player to build your lineups around. Generally, this player represents the closest we can find to a sure thing for the slate.
This column is all about trying to identify the free square for a particular slate. Often times, this will be a low-cost player who is thrust into a starting role and sure to make or exceed value. The type of player that allows us to load up the rest of our lineup with high salary studs. Occasionally it will be a high priced stud in a great spot. Each slate we will take a look at three or four players which represent great value on the day’s slate of games and choose the one which best represents the top value and floor play to earn the title of the slates Free Square
My NBA Free Squares for Today 🇺🇸 December 16th
Jalen Brunson $5,500 / $3,700
Luka Doncic is going to be out tonight for the Mavericks vs the Bucks. This vaults backup point guard Jalen Brunson into the Free Square realm on Fanduel where he is priced at just $3,700. Draftkings were ahead of the curve with their pricing on this one as they have Brunson priced up to $5,500. He played 34 minutes last game and scored 34.4 fantasy points against the Heat. He should play close to 30 minutes again tonight so I will likely go a different route on Draftkings because of that price, and on Fanduel I’ll be eating plenty of Jalen Brunson chalk in cash games.
GPP Pivot?
Brunson will be mega chalk tonight, and while, you might as well eat that chalk in Cash games, in GPP’s you want to try and be a little different. If we can find players in similarly good spots at much lower ownership, we should attack those spots with our Tournament lineups.
Patty Mills is a little more expensive on Fanduel and a lot cheaper on Draftkings, priced at only $4,300 and $4,700 respectively. In his last 4 games Mills has played 35, 33, 38 and 31 minutes and he has scored 24.2, 25.5, 17.2 and 37.5 fantasy points in those games. He’ll be much MUCH lower owned than Brunson tonight and has a nice uptemp matchup against the Rockets so he should be able to put up a solid game this evening.
Derrick Rose would be in line for some more usage tonight if one of, or both of, Drummond and Griffin are ruled out tonight. This is a dream matchup for guards against the Wizards tonight, so, the more usage that is off the floor (Drummond and Griffin) the better for D Rose in this one. Keep an eye on the news, and if they are out, load up on Rose tonight.
Derrick Jones Jr $4,200 / $4,100
The Heat are dealing with some injuries again tonight with Goran Dragic and Justise Winslow being ruled out. Derrick Jones Jr has been getting some extra run because of the injuries recently and he’s been producing very well. In his last 3 games, he has played 28, 27 and 34 minutes and he has scored 25.3, 33.8 and 26.4 fantasy points in those games. The matchup is solid tonight against a Memphis team that is far from the defensive juggernaut they used to be this season.

Donte DiVincenzo $4,600 / $4,000
Eric Bledsoe has been ruled out tonight for the Bucks so DiVincenzo should get another start. In his last game, he played 25 minutes and scored 35 fantasy points against the Cavaliers. He should get similar minutes tonight against the Mavericks who will be without Luka Doncic. This game has a pretty tight spread, because of all the injuries on both sides tonight so it should be a close competitive game.
What if???
If Andre Drummond and or Blake Griffin are ruled out tonight, we can get some solid value from Pistons Christian Wood. He is only $4,500 on Draftkings and $3,800 on Fanduel tonight and gets a juicy matchup against the Wizards. In his last game, he played 21 minutes and scored 28.9 fantasy points against the Rockets. Keep an eye on the injury front this evening because this is a real solid spot.
