Welcome to the DFS Army NBA Free Squares article, where I will try to break down my favorite NBA Free Squares and Fanduel and Draftkings for Today’s NBA slate.
So what is a Free Square exactly? In DFS we define the Free Square as a player to build your lineups around. Generally, this player represents the closest we can find to a sure thing for the slate.
This column is all about trying to identify the free square for a particular slate. Often times, this will be a low-cost player who is thrust into a starting role and sure to make or exceed value. The type of player that allows us to load up the rest of our lineup with high salary studs. Occasionally it will be a high priced stud in a great spot. Each slate we will take a look at three or four players which represent great value on the day’s slate of games and choose the one which best represents the top value and floor play to earn the title of the slates Free Square
My NBA Free Squares for Today 🇺🇸 December 12th
Luka Doncic $11,400 / $11,800
No discount here, but, on a small 4 game slate you’ve got to lock in as many fantasy points as you can. Luka has been on another level this year and the only fantasy player that has put up numbers close to his is Giannis Antetokounmpo. Luka has a 37% usage rate this season and he’s averaging 1.65 fantasy points per minute on Fanduel and 1.79 fantasy points per minute on Draftkings. He’s the top play tonight and it’s not even close. The best approach to cash games is likely going to be, force in Luka and figure the rest out along the way.
GPP Pivot – How about Damian Lillard? The Blazers visit Denver tonight to battle the Nuggets. Not a great spot for anyone but, if we’re looking for some low ownership in GPP’s this is a good spot. Over his last 3 games, Luka Doncic has scored 46.25, 49 and 37.75 fantasy points, whereas Damian Lillard has scored 45, 41.75 and 48.75 fantasy points. While it isn’t the most likely scenario, I don’t think it would be “that” surprising to see Dame outs score Luka tonight. He’s nearly $3,000 cheaper and 1/3 of the Ownership so he’s a great GPP play tonight.
Detroit Pistons
Andre Drummond has been downgraded to questionable tonight with an eye issue. If he’s ruled out, I expect everyone to flock towards Blake Griffin. You would expect Griffin to see added rebound opportunities and more usage with Drummond off the floor, however, this season we’ve seen the opposite. Griffin actually has a 2.12% usage drop with Drummond off the floor this season. I’m not saying you should fade Blake in cash games, but, there are viable options on this slate, and on his own team that we can target tonight.
GPP Pivot – Derrick Rose and Luke Kennard have been the main beneficiaries this season when Andre Drummond has been off the floor. Rose has seen a +4.09% usage increase and he has averaged +18.66 more fantasy points per game with Drummond out. Kennard gets a nice bump as well, but not nearly as significant, only +3.5% usage and +2.57 fantasy points per game. Both of these guys should be lower owned than Blake Griffin tonight.

Kevin Porter Jr $3,600 / $4,000
Porter has been playing better recently and he’s starting to show that upside the Cavs saw when they traded back into the 1st round to draft him this past summer. In his last 2 games he has played 29 and 24 minutes and he has scored 37.9 and 23.4 fantasy points. The Cavs overall have been awful, losing 14 of 15 games but we can pull some value from their team tonight vs the Spurs.
Others we can target for value tonight
BOS – Brad Wanamaker should get some extra run with Marcus Smart out. He doesn’t have a very high ceiling but he’s cheap and can allow us to pay up at some other spots tonight
POR – Seth Curry is going to get more minutes with Delon Wright out tonight. Curry is near min price throughout the industry and could be a solid salary saver tonight vs the Pistons
