Welcome to the DFS Army NBA Free Squares article, where I will try to break down my favorite NBA Free Squares and Fanduel and Draftkings for Today’s NBA slate.
So what is a Free Square exactly? In DFS we define the Free Square as a player to build your lineups around. Generally, this player represents the closest we can find to a sure thing for the slate.
This column is all about trying to identify the free square for a particular slate. Often times, this will be a low-cost player who is thrust into a starting role and sure to make or exceed value. The type of player that allows us to load up the rest of our lineup with high salary studs. Occasionally it will be a high priced stud in a great spot. Each slate we will take a look at three or four players which represent great value on the day’s slate of games and choose the one which best represents the top value and floor play to earn the title of the slates Free Square
My NBA Free Squares for Today 🇺🇸 November 12th 🇺🇸
Today we get a medium-sized 8 game Tuesday slate to breakdown. Currently, the highest implied team totals belong to the Blazers (113.5), the Kings (111.5) and the Lakers (112). While the three lowest totals belong to the Pacers (107.75), the Thunder (104.75) and the Bulls (109.5).

🇺🇸 Cory Joseph $3,7000 / $3,700
De’Aaron Fox is out tonight for the Kings so Cory Joseph is expected to get the start at PG vs the Blazers. This game has the highest total on the slate at 225 and the Kings have the 2nd highest team total on the slate at 111.5. Joseph is priced at $3,700 on both sites and I’m not sure how you can fade him here in this spot. He’s a Cash Game 🔒 LOCK tonight at this price with this role in this matchup. If you want to fade in GPP’s that’s fine, but, the only reason you’re fading him in GPP’s would be for the sole purpose of being different and just hoping he somehow fails. I don’t see him failing here at this price.
🇺🇸 Lakers
Anthony Davis has a sore shoulder, and he’s being listed as probable tonight. Simply because of his injury history, this is something we need to keep an eye on. He could go from Probable to OUT very quickly as we’ve seen in the past. If Davis is out, LeBron James would be a top play in all formats and I would have a lot of interest in Kyle Kuzma and Avery Bradley in tournaments.

🇺🇸 Sixers
Al Horford is out and Ben Simmons is Questionable heading into tonight’s game. If they are both OUT tonight, Joel Embid becomes an elite play on this slate. In 66 minutes this season, with Horford and Simmons off the floor, Embid has a 32.5% usage rate and averages 1.85 fantasy points per minute. I know the sample size is small, only 66 minutes, but those numbers are absurd. Raul Neto gets a +7.7% usage rate increase with these two out as well, but, he’s no longer dirt cheap as he’s priced at 4.8k on DK and 5.7k on FD tonight. I love Embid here if Simmons is out with Horford tonight. Tobias Harris and Josh Richardson would see some extra usage as well and they would be solid mid-range plays.
NOTE
With Al Horford out, we have Kyle O’Quinn and is min price on both sites. Mike Scott is also min price on FD and just 3.2k on DK. You could easily pair either of them with Cory Joseph above and then lock in 3 studs for your cash lineups tonight. I think I like the idea of punting with the PF Scott on Fanduel, rather than punting with Center, since we only have 1 center spot.
🇺🇸 Heat
The Heat are dealing with several injuries today and this could lead to some very high usage for Jimmy Butler. Right now the Heat are listing Justise Winslow and Derrick Jones as OUT tonight. They are also listing Kelly Olynyk and Tyler Herro as questionable. If all four of these players miss tonight’s game the Heat will have no choice but to play Jimmy Butler and Kendrick Nunn as many minutes as they can handle against the Pistons. Nunn is priced at 4.7k on DK and 5.0k on FD. For Jimmy Butler, his $7,800 price tag on Draftkings puts him directly in the FREE SQUARE category on that site. He’s just too good and his usage will be too high for his price to be that low. On Fanduel he’s much more accurately priced at $9,400.
