NHL Advice – Overview

On larger slates, it’s not feasible to dissect every possible combination.  For example, there aren’t a lot of scenarios where a Kings @ Oilers game stack would break the slate.  Sure, there are specific players to watch, but we can also largely write this game off our list and focus our efficiency elsewhere.  Vegas odds can be a great starting point, but adding in a little common sense helps hone our aim a little better.  Combine the implied team totals with which offenses are scoring AND matching up against defenses giving up goals, and now you have a little better direction.  Let’s focus there…

NHL Team Focus for DFS

Winnipeg Jets – Over the last 30 days, the Jets have scored the 12th most goals in the league.  Tonight, they matchup at home against Chicago.  The Blackhawks are allowing the 7th most goals over the same time frame.  Clearly a plus matchup for the Jets…..and our lead team to target being Vegas implies our Jets to score the most goals on the slate.

Vegas Golden Knights – 4th most goals scored over the month, facing Vancouver who is yielding 3rd most goals to opposing offenses.  People are catching onto the Knights heating up, but the Knights remain underpriced in a few key spots.  My 2nd favorite target.  And, you will likely find a few of these top two teams smattered all over my cash and gpp lineups tonight.

Nashville Predators – The Preds are a middling offense, but the Yotes (Arizona) are allowing the 6th most goals to opponents of late.  We found another strong positive matchup to take advantage of.

New York Rangers – The Rangers face off against the Ottawa Senators, who give up the league’s most goals currently.  Obviously, there is a bump due the Rangers here.  As a bonus, the Rangers aren’t an elite defense, either.  Who has scored the most goals over the month?  Colorado.  I fooled you.  But, who is second?  Ottawa.  Yes, the Sens.  Being neither team here is a defensive beast, and both are scoring goals lately, we could conceivably stack both sides of this game in a gpp and have a more than reasonable chance to get deep into some money.

Other mentions:  Tampa Bay, Boston

Hockey Player Pool Suggestions

Goalie – Hellebuck (WPG), Rinne (NSH), or Bobrovsky (CBJ)….looks like we are paying up a little at goalie tonight.

Stud defensemen – Chabot, Byflugien, Hedman……..all have high floors, high prices, and integral access to their team’s top scoring options.
Value defensemen – McDonaugh, Ristolainen, Theodore, Bogosian

Stud Wingmen – Laine, Kucherov, Skinner, Forsberg
Value Wingmen – Connor, Brady Tkachuk, Reilly Smith, Ehlers

Stud Centers – Point, Eichel, Scheifele, Stamkos
Value Centers – Colin White, Little, Eakin

Favorite Stack – There are a few tonight, but they will all be including a defenseman.  If I’m running Winnipeg, I’m including Byf.  If I’m running Nashville, I’m including Ellis or maybe Josi.  Vegas would have Theodore.  With key defensemen, I can stagger lines for better coverage in the instance my wings are on opposing top lines.  I can still correlate with a wing, and I might possibly luck out with a #StackSlam on a power play.

Favorite Contrarian Stack – Lately, Tampa goalie Louis Dominique has been a bit of a buzz word.  I love taking a volatile sport like hockey and tossing an overlooked stack out there.  Tonight, I’d likely run Ristolainen, Eichel, and Skinner at some gpps.  All three players are producing with nice overlapping ice time.  And, with Tampa carrying one of the higher totals out of Vegas tonight, our league leading Buffalo Sabres are still lacking a little in the respect department.  Give me a Tampa meltdown, and I likely have the skaters doing the damage….and I won’t be chalky in doing so.  Join me, if you have the stones.

Final Recommendation

Remember, on larger slates, you are just going to need to take stands.  No one can cover all the bases and find every key player from every game without a little luck.  What we can do, however, is narrow our pool to the best possible choices and hope to hit on the right players in those top spots.  Correlation is often the key to gpps.  But, on larger slates, you can limit your stacking and really spread out for cash games and head to heads.  For your upside contests in that cash lineup, consider 3man leagues or 10man leagues.  Any cash lineup can beat 10 people, and you gain some upside for doing so.  Smart money plays in DFS.  Be smart.
