NHL Advice – Early Games
NYI vs PIT – The Penguins have taken the top team scoring spot on the year in goals per game, but the Isles haven’t been pushovers ranking 27th in goals against. The PIT2 has been both scoring and giving away goals, but I don’t see a lot of interest here for me otherwise on such a large slate. Malkin is always in play for cash games being he gives you access to the hot PIT line and Sidney Crosby on the PP1.
DET vs CBJ – Detroit has been very generous this year, ranking 4th in goals against. Add in the Blue Jackets, at home, and currently sitting in the 3rd spot in goals scored per game, and I have perhaps the slate’s best play for you. CBJ1. You can break it up a bit in cash since the goals might come from anywhere, but you can very tightly focus down in GPPs by stacking Panarin/Atkinson/DuBois. Toss in either Werenski or Seth Jones for good measure, or more diversity. The truly smart possibilities are endless here tonight. Cash or GPPs, most of them are completely viable plays. I might come back with some Tatar or Anthanasiou, but don’t believe I’m very high on DET unless I need the savings. Value is everywhere tonight. If I had to offer a #StackSlam, it would be that top line…Atkinson/Panarin/DuBois.
CGY vs BUF – Calgary on the back end of a back to back tonight leads us to believe they might be tired. However, Buffalo isn’t some phenomenal team. The Flames might have a scoring boost hidden in them for gpps when it comes to their top line, arguably one of the hottest in hockey. Gaudreau/Lindholm/Monahan make a formidable stack, even if a little contrarian. BUF ranks middling in terms of goals allowed at 14th. And, for an even more contrarian line, the CGY1 is vulnerable to counter attacks, making the BUF1 of Skinner/Pominville/Eichel also a savvy play.
BOS vs CAR — The Bruins are playing more defensive by the numbers this year, and CAR likes to score. This is an obvious downgrade for the Hurricanes’ top line on paper. However, the BOS1 and the CAR1 are running hot. The BOS1 and the CAR2 are the defensive liabilities to their clubs. If I’m playing anyone from this game, it’s the top lines for the likely matchup of strong on weak going both directions. I would imagine the Bruins will target that 2nd line of CAR, and the Hurricanes might come right back with home ice shift change and drop their top line out vs BOS where they can. That kind of chaos might link up for fireworks, and it might just misfire all over the ice tonight. I’m not likely to use them in cash games, but either line is in play for GPPs. If you stack both, you might not be that crazy in thinking this one shoots out. My favorite value play of this game is actually Michael Ferland. We get a huge discount at $5200 on Fanduel and his 40 SOG in his 11 games where he also dropped 10+ fantasy points in 9 of those 11.

DFS NHL Picks – Middle Games
DAL vs MTL – More middling matchups. However, Alexander Radulov is projected for the top line with Seguin and Pitlick as of now. No PP time is concerning, but his consistency is not. Radulov is $6300ish on Fanduel and has produced double digit points in 5 of 6 games this year. He serves as one of my favorite one-offs tonight that can serve on my cash lineups.
NJD vs TBL – I can roll with the hotter line in NJD1 here, but I’m likely to see Tampa playing better at home and tempering my exposure some. I will roster some Kyle Palmieri, though, at $6400 on Fanduel and his 40 point ceiling offering 6 of his last 7 games in double digits. His 23.5 fantasy point average will cool off, but for now, it’s just ridiculous production for the price tag. I have better places to focus the rest of my energies outside Palmieri.
VGK vs NSH – Another paper target matches the top NSH1 line of Arvidsson/Johansen/Forsberg with the Vegas Knights. Vegas isn’t leaky on defense, which suppresses this matchup some, but it remains gpp viable given the run NSH1 is on. I would like to see some others on the top VGK1 line step up, too, being they might matchup vs that NSH1 who has been less than stellar as an individual line. However, your top value play in this one is Alex Tuch at $4500 and his back to back 15+ point games. The rest of this game is rather unspectacular by comparison tonight.
What Our VIPs Are Saying About Learning DFS NHL

2nd place in a gpp is always nice. We talked a little in slack (VIP only) yesterday about where the chalk would be and how to pivot. Joker was kind enough to mention his inspiration, as I had forgotten…being a true chalk-eater. I wasn’t going to play this combo, but I don’t shy away from recommending opportunities for those that will…

Our coaching is incredibly good, and we have the members chirping!

NHL Strategy – Late Games
MIN vs EDM – No major strength or weakness matching up here, either. MIN is coming of a game last night, so there might be something deep in the weeds for EDM. When comparing hot lines to leaky lines, there isn’t anything tapping that radar on paper. I will largely be off this game.
PHI vs ANA – We should expect a SOG bump for PHI tonight being the Ducks allow the most shots on goal across the entire league. Will that translate into goals? I’m not so sure, but it very well could. Konecny is very cheap up top, if you want a little piece of this one. But, with 5 of 8 games under 10 fantasy points, he’s just not producing yet. You might also target the PHI2, as that is the leaky line in this one. But, it’s not as if any Ducks are running hot enough to gamble on a full slate like this. If playing the Late Night or After Hours slates, by all means….give it a shot.
OTT vs ARI – Now, we get a little interest coming back around to wrap the night. Ottawa rolls into Arizona and is scoring the 7th most goals while giving up the 3rd most against on the year. This is a good sign for fireworks. However, we need Arizona to deliver on their end and that might be the struggle. Nearly dead last in production, but they do shoot. I can see the game hitting the under in Vegas, too, being ARI has sported some lock down defense when Raanta is between the pipes. I do like him as my lead goalie (for a little more talk on that one, see the YouTube channel linked above and today’s video). My favorite value play here is defenseman Thomas Chabot. In 10 games, Chabot has given us 3 goals, 10 assists, and a whopping 33 shots on goal plus blocked shots for a very solid floor. Give me his price at a stupid $4400 and I’m all in.
NYR vs SJS — Our hammer game tonight puts us on my second favorite line stack of the night. The SJS2 has been cruising of late. With San Jose scoring at a top 10 clip while pumping shot after shot on goal (2nd in the league), it’s hard to imagine them falling flat tonight facing the Rangers who allow 9th most goals against and 4th most shots on goal. Like Columbus, this matchup should be lighting the lamp in your head. Give me the lesser priced #2 line, and I can afford the top CBJ line, too. It comes together nearly perfectly. Timo Meier leads my stack with 10+ fantasy points in all of his last 7 games and an average over 18 points on the season. #StackSlam number two – Meier/Hertl/Couture where Couture offers some exposure, also, to the top power play unit with Kane and Pavelski. Great cash exposure to 5 players. If you only had to take two players, I’d be grabbing Meier/Couture and moving along.
